Are there any good tablet-based programs that can let me change radio/nav stuff? The ones I found are either linked to only a single plane, or are one of those "use your tablet as a second monitor" deal.

Oh god. I just reactivated my Vatsim account and... it's been a shade over 20 years since I first moved from Satco to Vatsim. Jesus. :corsair:

In other news, how well does the CH Products Flight Yoke still hold up these days? I used it back in the day before something inside it broke, but lasted me many years, so I was considering getting another one.

Anyone know anybody that takes painting commissions for MSFS? I initially wanted to try recreating my old Piper Warrior 2 trainer plane, but the steps required are a bit much.

Finally settled down and played MSFS for the first time. I lost six hours of my day, Jesus I fell face first right back down the sim flight rabbit hole.

My biggest problem was my controller constantly fighting with my mouse for focus when I was trying to manipulate stuff in the cockpit.

Something like a 737-200 or an old Baron with steam gauges or something. I like flying vintage stuff where you're navigating visually or going VOR-to-VOR better than everything having a G1000.
If you want old and slow general aviation, look at Just Flight’s PA-28-161 Piper Warrior II. You can use all the original instruments, or with a toggle you can swap to GPS and even the GN750.

One thing I would suggest is checking out these videos on how to adjust controller sensitivity. The defaults are mostly alright, but you might want to tweak it a bit to suit yourself:

Does anyone know how to flag "fake" airports? Like I've found a couple places that Asobo considers airports, but do not actually exist in real life. Like they somehow flagged a dirt road south of I-15 as "Fort Irwin Airport"

I did that exact same combo. No rudder pedals yet, I'll pick them up next month or something.

I had brief access to flight sim on the C64, but after that I don't think I had access to any kind of flight sims until my family got a proper home PC many years later, and it was all downhill from there.

So are there any programs to automatically create layout.json and manifest.json files when creating MSFS scenery? None of the guides I've used have mentioned that I need either of these files, but when I go to build and export the scenery it keeps yelling at me that the files are missing, so it never finishes building.

I'm also wondering if I've just setup the directory structures entirely wrong.

I hope the next update has an easy way to flag airports for removal or fixing. I've found a number that either do not exist in real life, or they've laid out the airport entirely wrong.

Took my just flight piper warrior out for a spin tonight. Flew into furnace creek, Death Valley at dusk. Then flew pretty well in the blind from there to Baker. Finally took a scenic route to Oxnard via Palmdale.

MSFS is real pretty. And amazingly fun to fly with just a controller. I’ll hook up my yoke one day.

Finally got Airmate EFB to work together with MSFS and my ipad. Had to download the "fs2ff.exe" program and manually specify the IP of the tablet, for some reason the UDP broadcast to the whole network didn't work. Once that got sorted, it's pretty great, and $free is amazing.

Is there a good lightweight "mega pack" or something for aircraft liveries? I'm tired of vPilot constantly complaining it can't find matching planes when I'm on vatsim.

I've tried looking at flightsim.to but it's all kind of a confusing mess.

:imunfunny:

I think they can actually temp ban you from the service for being online and not talking to the controller, even if you don’t bust airspace. Do this at your own risk.
This is what I usually when flying online. Squawk 1200 and fly over/under/around controlled airspace. Only time I really call ATC is if I want to do a scenic tour of cities, and most of the time they are happy to tell me to do whatever I want as long as I don’t bust airspace.

Someone brought it up in here before, but I think it would be a lot of fun to do some good old fashioned goonswarming on VATSIM with like 50 of us all flying 152s VFR asking for the same transition through whatever big bravo airport they've got running, one after another. It's perfectly legal! You have to provide the services if your workload permits it!!
I would be game for this. Vatsim needs more VFR GA aircraft.

I really wish they would just batch download a zip file with the update, instead of hundreds of separate .fspatch files, it would probably be a more efficient use of bandwidth on both sides.

Don't forget to rename your community folder before updating, just in case!

It’s been pretty great. I’m slowly adding custom support for the just flight warrior, but I’ve been running into some small problems. However the generic panel layouts work just fine for most stuff. It’s a good way to make use of a spare monitor or tablet/phablet.

So, for starters, there's a lot of tactile feedback an IRL plane gives you that sims just can't. My flight instructor said that people who try flying for real from sims have a tendency to watch the dashboard and "chase needles" instead of feeling the plane and looking out the window.

Yep. My instructor had to cover the gauges with sticky notes for the first few hours until I stopped looking inside.

The Piper Warrior from just flight is also a great trainer. It has two separate VOR gauges, and you can swap into GNS530/GTN750 if you want to step into glass panel stuff. Of course it’s a payware plane but what the heck.
