i'm giving a tentative rec to higurashi as the op of the thread for it because, if it's more like the vn, it'll be a well-constructed psychological mystery story with interesting characters rather than purely the bloody gorefest the old show is commonly known as. but i won't know which side it errs on until a while into it so i can't say for sure that's what it'll be, higurashi adaptations have a pretty bad history and it might just be wishful thinking to expect this to be the one to nail it from the start. but i made the thread for it anyway because my brain has morphed into a pile of when they cry memes over the past year

the idea of slime mom is kinda fun but i found the execution in the manga super boring, most of the character dynamics outside like a couple felt kinda one note and the gag where she and the sexy elf go to the forest and the elf gets high on mushrooms and chases her around while she screams about how she's not gay kinda sucked. not that i'm trying to cancel it or w/e it was just kind of a boring joke that turned me off any core appeal it had for me. maybe i'll enjoy the anime more tho idk The Colonel fucked around with this message at 17:18 on Oct 10, 2020 |

i'm not qualified to talk about the subject myself but if you want media that digs deeper into the experience of lgbt living in japan then it does exist one night, hot springs is a vn written as a fairly japanese trans living-101 thing and is the first in a whole trilogy that does exploration of the subject of living as an lgbt person in japan, made by an lgbt indie dev who lives in japan wanna go out (or its official title, how do we relationship) is a very grounded manga about adult lesbian relationships yagate kimi ni naru/bloom into you is kind of the standard lesbian manga rec these days but it goes into the subject a fair bit, especially with the side cast the bride was a boy is a short autobiographical manga about a trans woman that's just a small sample of stuff off the top of my head there's def way more out there. i forget the name of it but there's one really good oneshot about an x-gender person that does a really good job exploring that corner of teenage lgbt japanese life The Colonel fucked around with this message at 00:17 on Nov 10, 2020 |

he's an extremely goofy teen who wants to look cool and joke around with his friends. the old anime sorta shows that side of him but it's extra present in the vns where half of his screen time is him teasing people and then getting owned for it gou is also a direct sequel that just slightly disguises that for the first episode, so. i like watanabe's designs because they're the closest thing any animated form of higurashi has to looking like the original vn designs, unironically, they adhere surprisingly close to how ryukishi drew the cast in capturing details most redesigns kinda smooth out

if you're gonna compare it to kino it's not really worth comparing elaina to kino 2003 cause kino 2003 is about as transformative an adaptation of its material as you can get, rather than something fairly direct like kino 2017

This man is ruining his career... He should've picked a better debut project for his first role as director. His work as a part of the staff on Kandagawa Jet Girls, Sin: Nanatsu no Taizai, Kabukicho Sherlock and Senran Kagura Shinovi Master gave him such a powerful reputation... and here he goes, just... throwing it all away. Now people will just forget his prestigious earlier career in favor of this trash. Sad.
