Up first, at 3 AM GMT on Sunday October 4 (9 PM MST on Saturday the 3rd oh god I hope I did that math right I even have a chart and I'm not sure): Vincent Price in The Last Man on Earth (1964):

I just couldn't resist starting out with an apocalypse disease movie, can you blame me? I promise Halloween will be more escapist but c'mon, it's Vincent Price, in the original adaptation of the story that would also be filmed as Omega Man and I Am Legend. And it's available on Youtube, so it's perfect.

See you there friends! And an obnoxiously early Happy Halloweeeeeeeen!

When should we watch a movie this week, friends? Earlier than last week?

How about 23:00 GMT Saturday, that's late afternoon for me, not too late for east-coast US, conceivable for West Europe, and a brunch-time movie on Sunday for Australia I guess but hey why not? There are worse ways to spend Sunday morning.

During our last showing we discussed the sci fi and horror novels of Ira Levin, and when I looked into it lo and behold there is a free copy of The Boys from Brazil up on Youtube. Seems fitting, our first 2020 scary movie was about a plague, number two is about clones and nazis. Any objections?

No Bubby! I don't like dogs, Bubby!!!!

Well too bad, because in just about 7 hours, at midnight BST (there is no GMT now, see? Ugh my brain...) join us at http://psp-tv.com/r/BYOBween as we continue revisiting the frightfully relevant classics. This week, a suspense film that dances around 9th grade biology quiz terms for one of the silliest/least silly premises in scifi: The Boys From Brazil!

Warning: contains nazzys! The response to last week's The Last Man on Earth was positive enough, I'm excited that we can watch some actually good and scary movies together this month- see you there, screammates! *Cryptkeeper laugh*

Could not agree more. This is my favorite Gregory Peck turn of all time. Yeah I know, To Kill A Mockingbird is great, but playing heroes is easy. He's better as Ahab. For the same reasons he's an unforgettable heavy in this, against Laurence freaking Olivier of all people. Adaptation of a best-selling novel with very good thriller editing and thoughtful photography backing all-time acting greats up, it's an amazing movie.

Before we get to it though, I'm really curious about people's reactions to The Last Man on Earth. We've had a week to mull it over, and something I keep thinking about is how Dr. Robert Morgan always slept fully clothed, sitting half-up on his couch just sort of drifting in and out as zombies moaned outside his house. That's a great visual cue of his transformation into Legend. What's scary about him to the new vampire people is that he can go out in the daylight, finding hidden vamps and staking them when they're most vulnerable. But it's the nighttime that proves what a monster he is from their perspective, because he's not hurt by going out in the dark like they are in the light. He defends himself just fine at night, though it comes at the cost of constant vigilance. Sleeping with one eye open, every day a sleep-deprived monotony he's just gotten used to. He hasn't changed out of his vest and jacket combo in weeks, a depressed wreck kind of monster as well as the kind who's impervious to sun damage, never needs vaccine, and has old-world machinery and medical training that let him kill with shocking effectiveness. He fulfills all the aspects of the legendary monster, he's a complete Grendel figure by the end. Such a great story.

Prof. Crocodile posted:

i think my big takeaway is that this is the only one of the dozen or so film adaptions of the story that nails (or even accepts) the key premise--that morgan is the monster. and i think that's a shame because without that twist it's kind of a one-dimensional story.

Right? It says a lot that we shy away from that more self-aware, morally unsure ending in subsequent retellings.

Any thoughts on when to show this week's movie? I couldn't help but notice we had fewer people this last week, but that could be for many reasons.

Tonight! At midnight BST (about 6.5 hours from RIGHT NOW!), join us at http://psp-tv.com/r/BYOBween for this week's scary movie: 1932's White Zombie starring Bela Lugosi!!!!

Warning: yes the title to this film is a comment on race, and yes there are comments about race in this movie, from the 30's, so be prepared. Considering the entire idea of Zombies is stolen and twisted from an IRL religion it's pretty hard to find totally inoffensive zombie material, but this one isn't so bad comparatively (I was considering 1941's "King of the Zombies", an early horror/comedy, but oh man some of the jokes in it are suuuuper not cool...).

If somebody has a better idea (and a youtube link) today we can look at watching it instead, but this one is a classic, and only momentarily icky in places IIRC. See you tonight, friends! IF YOU DARE! *lightning, thunder, gust of wind, dark and stormy etc*

Sig by Heather Papps

BoldFrankensteinMir

The more I think about it, I like how White Zombie fits our theme: uncomfortably relevant-to-2020 classic horror movies.

We started with a plague in The Last Man on Earth, and a message of perspective about who the "good guys" and "bad guys" really are.

Then it was international neonazis in The Boys From Brazil, where we saw the real terror of fascism: when it's embodied in the youth.

And for our third night: cultural appropriation! Bela Lugosi plays a Voodoo priest in what is generally considered the first feature-length zombie movie. Based loosely on The Magic Island, a book that helped start the highly distasteful faux-Haitian Voodoo craze (It makes the faux-Polynesian Tiki craze seem almost respectful in comparison.)

Like I said, I passed over much worse offenders to get to this one- unlike almost all zombie movies that follow, this one at least takes place in part in Haiti. We'll have to use our, gulp, historical perspective and good judgement in watching it, oooh scary!

Edit- corrected spelling.

Fun times once again! Not every scary movie has the guts to conga-line its baddies off a cliff so efficiently, but there you have it.

It begs the question- if you had access to the backlot, sets and props of a classic movie studio, what story would you tell with them? I'd do a movie about a real estate agent who specializes in castles, and the movie is him trying to sell one crazy millionaire castle after castle and keep him from seeing that they're haunted. Just needs one more sale to retire, but ALL these castles are haunted darn it!!!!

Sig by Heather Papps

BoldFrankensteinMir

I could run the movies a second time. Today was especially bad because it was just an hour long.

I'm glad y'all are liking this because I'm going all out for Halloween Saturday. I got a costume, and a big long playlist of shorts and music I'm gonna play, I'll be in chat all day getting drunk with anyone who wants to join me, it's gonna be a blast.

Manifisto posted:

are you mostly sticking with old ones?

we could go real old and do the cabinet of dr. caligari

excellent suggestion! The key factor is if a movie is on Youtube and not restricted in any regions, but a movie with a lapsed copyright makes both much more likely!

Sig by Heather Papps

BoldFrankensteinMir

There is very often a barrier for modern viewers that makes black & white movies hard for them to focus on, so I'm always a little bit careful watching them in groups. Don't get me wrong I love B&W movies and photography, I would have a whole subforum where posting color media is bannable. But I have weird tastes in general so I try to keep perspective on how niche the act of watching classic movies has become.

Regarding the type of movies for this purpose, I like the old (usually B/W but not always) crappy ones better than "good" ones. If the point of the exercise is to make comments and enjoy the fun of reading others' comments, you don't WANT a movie that needs concentration or deserves attention.

I've long been a fan of MST3K and its heirs and successors, and the best movies for the purpose are old and bad and confusing and silly.

Word. This is not so much about riffing I figure, since we've been watching quality flicks. But there's still joking to be had, of course.

I would LOVE to set up a formal riffing thing on the forums for bad movies, there are a couple groups doing it presently and it remains to be seen which ones coalesce. We'll never run out of public domain cheese video, though.

1920's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is indeed available, would people like that, or perhaps a contemporary (that I found a very high quality copy of): 1922's Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror!

Or, maybe even both, if we feel like it?

We can do Night of the Living Dead, but not for Halloween itself, let's do it earlier in the week.

For Halloween night I have big plans already, if I can pull it off we're gonna watch Black Whip, broken up with other 1-reelers for a solid like 6 hour block of media, and I'm going to do host segments in costume.

Tomorrow's movies will start at Midnight BST like last week. If we do Romero on say Wednesday of next week what would be a good time? Later I imagine?

Wednesday, October 28 at midnight BST, join us again at http://psp-tv.com/r/BYOBween for another spooky October movie!

Tonight's show starts in aprox 6 hours! I hope folks can make it despite it being a weekday. We'll see!

As for this weekend I wanted to ask, especially the Aussies who attend, what would be a good time for you to start Halloween night festivities? It'd be some point in what is my Friday, I think? I have about 5 hours of material to share and am willing to do two showings if that would be valuable, but my broke dyscalculic brain has a real hard time figuring out when the optimal time to do such things would be.

Howdy pardners! Ahem, I mean, hey friendos! Halloween is almost here!!!!!! And since it's a Saturday (in the US at least, grrrr time magicks) that means Halloween movie night! *lightning strikes* Ah ah ah!

I have something super special planned for us. We're gonna watch about 5 hours (so far!) of video total, a grand collection of shorts, shows and other holiday treats, plus all 12 parts of the serial smash that made BYOB's cinematic summer, Black Whip!

All the feature films we've watched this month have been great, but for the holiday itself lets all chill together with shorts, media we can hop in and out of as we see fit in a casual party setting. I've got a great mix of favorites old and new (but I'm always open to more suggestions!), and there are even a few special surprises I can't wait to share with y'all!

The festivities will begin same time as usual, Midnight BST (which will be banished back to Hell soon, we'll be back to slightly less confusing GMT! Hooray!!!!), and will go until we run out of videos or viewers, whichever comes first. I truly look forward to spending this, my favorite holiday, with my BYOB friends this year. We're gonna have a blast!
