Movie night yesterday was great! I had not taken part before, so I don't know if other previous picks have been this good, but Thief and Cobbler was amazing with its mix of trippy visuals, historical value of all sorts of crazy animation techniques, and amusing kleptomaniac shenanigans that guided most of the plot. Thief will remain the hero we all deserve in my heart.

I was on a busy dinner event so I couldn't attend properly, but I watched bits via the phone and dang if that wasn't some horny affair full of weird but really elaborate martial arts choreography. I'm not sure if there was a coherent story there, but I think I'll try and rewatch it properly because it looked pretty cool.

Any suggestions for tomorrow's movie?

If there are no other suggestions (and this hasn't come up before), It (1927).

"It" is a 1927 silent romantic comedy film which tells the story of a shop girl who sets her sights on the handsome and wealthy boss of the department store where she works. Because of this film, actress Clara Bow became a major star of the highest magnitude, and as result, became known as the "It girl".

And I just remembered where I had heard dialogue from this movie sampled in a song before! It's from Circle of Dust, an industrial group, specifically Neophyte:

I was very disappointed with War of the Satellites. It was a train wreck, a complete mess.

Now I'm not so sure I even watched that movie.

Or any movie.

I don't know anything.

I saw a blur, and a falcon came out of it and clawed my eyes off. There was a 70's action song playing while this happened.

It didn't, HP. Alas, it didn't.

But did you know the plot according to wiki is that "the Satanists' goal is to have Raymond father a male child with Barbara, who in turn will mate with his half-sister (Katy) and produce the physical embodiment of Zatteen."?

That didn't help either, but I'm thankful to whoever wrote that summary because I wasn't aware about this important aspect of the story.

What If Nessie Was Radioactive and Walked Around London Trashing It

I could take the boring parts if the ending had delivered. And boy did the ending not bloody deliver at all! Twenty minutes of preparation to shoot down Groovy Dino, only for it to take a missile to the face, with a scene later of a radio teasing an open ending of "wait, did it just move to the US instead of being destroyed??" all in the space of like 30 seconds at most, THE END

I did like the parts of London being trashed apart with all the civilians just running around aimlessly and falling down randomly like they forgot to eat breakfast, all the while our protagonist dino just smashed all the walls and bridges it could find. Pretty low tech special effects but they got me.

Of interest to this thread, I have just come across this freely available online (legally) library with an absurd amount of Polish movies. They all seem to have English subtitles.

https://notesfrompoland.com/2022/07/18/hundreds-of-classic-polish-films-made-available-for-free-online/

People who know the films are posting some recommendations elsewhere:

Zacny_Los posted:

Every movie is iconic and worth watching to get to know Polish history and culture. But to choose four:
  • Kieślowski's 'Three Colours White'
  • Wajda's 'Man of Marble'
  • Wojciech Jerzy Has' adaption of Bruno Schulz' The Hourglass Sanatorium
  • Andrzej Munk's 'Bad Luck'

AThousandD posted:

The above selection is a bit on the heavier, more serious side.

If you're looking for something easier to digest, I'd recommend:
  • Jak Rozpętałem II Wojnę Światową (How I Unleashed World War II)
  • Deja Vu - a classic 1920s gangster comedy, made in cooperation with the USSR (and a bit of a cult film there, as far as I can tell)
  • Va Banque series - similar theme to the above
  • Cruise (Rejs) - a cult classic of absurdist comedy
  • Our Folks (Sami Swoi) and the rest of the films in the series - a classic cult series depicting rural life in post-war Poland and a feud between two neighbouring families
  • Forbidden Songs (Zakazane Piosenki) - depicting life in occupied Poland during WWII and how people coped with German oppression
  • King Size (King Sajz) - about, well, schrats in the 1980s
For more serious ones:
  • A Short Film about Love and A Short Film about Killing
  • The Interrogation (Przesłuchanie) - about Stalinist-era repressions

Lokis is the classic Gothic horror, based on Prosper Mérimée's story, often compared to Hammer's horrors:

Quiet is the Night is a thriller (krimi/giallo), inspired by a case of an early serial killer in the 20s.
https://35mm.online/en/vod/feature-films/quiet-is-the-night

Va Banque is a crime comedy set in the 20s, very similar to The Sting.
https://35mm.online/en/vod/feature-films/va-banque

Sexmission is a comedy about two men who wake up hundreds of years in the future, in a world where only women remain; a Hollywood ripoff was announced a few years ago, and is in development hell.
https://35mm.online/en/vod/feature-films/sexmission

Havana '61 is a very interesting look at Cuba just after Castro's revolution, as shown from the "other side".

Not sure if any of this would work on Cytube, but in case it does, that How I Unleashed World War II sounds like a fun comedy:
