Personally I think the concept of the federated internet and the work people have done is really interesting. I also think it's important to different people for different reasons. Probably for most people, myself included, there's not much practical use there that makes it worth the "effort," either to understand or to get situated without an established community. My favorite is Scuttlebutt, where you do your posts offline and they sync as you meet people in real life, along with people they have synced with. In this way, it grows in a more personal way. You can also sync online, too, if you choose. Again, though... Concept is cool, adoption is low.
