The delegation from the Kalamazoo Workers Assembly are happy to join the Comintern. Regarding the current debate, we agree in part with both positions. Globally, the last half millennium has seen the forces of unrestrained capitalism impose incredible harms on countless populations in search of profit. Indigenous peoples and the global south have born the brunt of this burden. We have an obligation to ensure that patterns of unequal development and exploitation are not replicated as we move to our glorious future.

Yet, the solution is not “better” nationalism—it is less nationalism. It is a society where socialist abundance and the end of the settler’s legacy of toxic ethnonationalism break the idea that we must pit workers against one another.

The KWA’s overarching concern is that the process of building this shared future is going to require dedicated and persistent forums that include all North American workers. We respect the role of the Comintern but we must stitch our continent back together as a step towards universal, stateless, communism.

OOC: Yeah, I'd say the "no-duh" parts would be that indigenous groups would have 100%, no hidden clauses, control over any surviving cultural sites. But in general there should be a respect for cultural sites over the needs of capitalism.

OOC: the other exciting but tricky thing in the American context is that TNEs/space socialism largely make the sort of extractive settlement that displaced First Peoples unnecessary. I wonder, if given time and a participatory framework (so it doesn’t feel forced) if much of the worlds rural regions would depopulate and only those with strong cultural ties to the land would remain.

Japan will get to space eventually. That's a given. Our choice is whether we want to accelerate it. At the moment, we have a substantial head start on the remaining capitalist powers, and the disparity increases with every outpost we build, every exploration and surveying expedition we execute, and every xenoarcheological site we uncover.

With that dynamic in mind, the Kalamazoo Workers' Assembly proposes a policy of wary indifference towards Japan and the other capitalist powers. We will not interfere with their development efforts nor attempt to enforce our dominance over them. They will be welcome to find their way to space as our equals, in their due time. Now, without our helping hand their ascent to the stars may stretch years and years, and they're likely to find a red cosmos awaiting--but that is their problem if they want to go their own way. And if their capitalist jealousy takes our disinclination to subsidize their imperialist ambition as some sort of sign of aggression, or if they are found to be harboring GLADIO elements, they can be reminded that the workers have won two world wars already.

We should also consider whether we want to pause and wait until our Indian delegation makes contact before continuing any conversation. It may not make sense to have two parallel agreements as opposed to a common framework.

The other vague notion I'll present to the body: on further reflection, the real question at the heart of our relationship with Japan is whether we can escape the security dilemma we are currently trapped in. They correctly see the status quo as an existential threat--without our assistance to bootstrap their space program ASAP, the half decade lead we have will guarantee our enduring strategic hegemony. Their proposal is a viable short term release valve, but it won't actually solve the underlying dilemma. The next time we make a leap and start outpacing them again, we would have to assume they would start making threats again.

So aside from communist revolution, how do we escape the security dilemma?

Speaking for myself, the hawkish wing doesn't take the threat of nuclear war lightly. Nor do we gleefully anticipate confrontation. But even if we took Japan's initial proposal without a single concession or counteroffer, we'd only be buying time. As others have pointed out, even if we gift them some ships, our head start into the stars and the sheer demographic/geographic imbalance between our multi-continental bloc and a single nation means it is only a matter of time before we're once again in a position of potential hegemony and they'll start making threats again. They want to be our equals, but to reiterate--if they put their entire population and economy into research labs, they couldn't support our current level of R&D investments.

If we want to take this deal, we should go into with open eyes and have a contingency for the next crisis--and a plan or a SCYTHE to eventually resolve our fundamental disagreements.

You do realize that you just argued that nothing will fundementally change, yes? I'm having a hard time seeing that as a down side. The only way they can resolve that power imbalance is either them getting a suprise boost from something or becoming more tied to us.

That being said, I don't think anyone is opposed to a "Japan tries to screw with us" contingency plan.

True--your reaction may depend on how much you're willing to tolerate an oppositional Japan in general.

One area our delegation is waffling about though is that of colonization. Is there really actually a substantial risk of Japan, or any other power, creating some sort of neo-colonial empire of the stars? Especially if we can stand develop a shared convention on off-world migration to ban indentured servitude and other exploitative labor practices.

The upside of this is, WE don't get locked out either if they start just plopping down hasty garbage habitats wherever they can reach. Wherever they put a colony, WE can put a colony. And our model of encouraging a transition to self-governance with equal voice in the Comintern will seem far more agreeable than being merely a resource-extraction colony. People find more in common with their nearby "enemies" than their distant "superiors," especially in a harsh settler environment fostering independence and cooperation among the Working Man in the face of adversity. I feel that close exposure to the Socialist Way far removed from their Corporate Masters may foster a desire for self-determination among them. And if they should wish to join the Comintern, so much the better. And even if it doesn't, we have the tech, resources and population to completely out-develop them on any world, and what red-blooded plutocrat will admit a bunch of pinkos are better at industrialization than they are?

We can also check against the rebirth of Japanese imperialism by proactively engaging with the developing world. Japan will need to import labor to any colonies they create; if we've substantially raised living conditions in the developing world and have already set up enrollment pipelines for our glorious socialist colonies, they will be importing this labor form a position of weakness. In the long term, we of course want to incorporate all of those areas into the Comintern, but setting up those sort of development and recruitment deals seems like it would get us closer to integration anyway.

Speaking as someone who would love to participate more, I would love a dump/summary of the big picture world building that’s been established by the discord — it’s hard to know how to contribute constructively without knowing what’s already been decided.

Comrades, a baby boom is not something to be avoided. While it’s imperative for the women of the world have the means and knowledge to control their reproductive health, the reality is that free from the yoke of capitalist exploitation and forced scarcity and with our new systems of social care, many may choose to have larger families. To see this as problem to ascribe to a pre-TNE mindset, and risk hobbling our long term plans to adorn the star with human flourishing.

Realistically, Earth must run a population and food surplus. We must adopt a comprehensive plan to expand the areas under cultivation, invest in infrastructure to connect under utilized breadbaskets to the global food supply and strengthen the resilience and sustainability of current production.

In particular, we need to invest in a comprehensive modernization of African agriculture - due to imperialist underdevelopment of the continent, there is immense potential there.

Also, the architecture is really unlike anything we've seen so far from the "Martians." Is it possible this is some different culture we haven't encountered yet? Or even a new species? I know it seems unlikely we'd have TWO aliens in the Solar System, but it can't be ruled out. Our accumulated knowledge of the Martians might not be applicable here, we can't make any assumptions.

The 'Martians' were in a shooting war with someone. This could be them.

The representative from the Mackinaw Micro-Commune of the Upper Lower Michigan would like to propose adding to the bill above the consolidation and oversight of all national and international mail systems into COMPOST. Thank you for your consideration.
