White for a work truck
Chrome for a lifestyle truck.

Personally? White/black on whatever body that isn't all black. I have an aversion to chrome.

Exhaust is very use case, I'd dump em at the bumper if its not used for towing trailers. Trailers? turn it down or route to the side.

The failure was so sudden, I'm really hoping it's a HG, but I'm getting it apart before I make any definitive decisions. I don't exactly live in an area replete with old 22REs kicking around, so finding one to swap would probably cost more and be more of a pain than a rusted out, 200K+ mile chassis is worth.

Turns out heads are pretty cheap on ebay

found this too. maybe they'll ship?

I am pleasantly surprised by how cheap loaded heads are for the 22RE.

The cam is a little crumby. Likely just a regrind issue. T6 + zddp additive and it should perform till the frame snaps. If you are planning to roll this engine to another chassis or take it somewhere that your life may depend on it, drop a new cam in, otherwise it'll be fine. It'll grind a lobe down at some point and the oil pump/filter will catch the swarf.

Honestly though, I'll probably at some point swap the rear end ratio to something slightly more livable than a 4.88 since I'm not planning on this being a drag truck.

It's amazing how much of what I've done on this thing is literally just "unfuck what the PPO did".

TruckThings.txt.

Are you going to swap the gears yourself or farm it out?

What did he buy as a replacement for the Element? A 2009 VW GTI.
It is a manual, I don't know the mileage, I'm guessing "a lot".

I guess sooner or later everyone needs to learn a lesson about VWs

kids out of his element.

I remember those years. Best of luck to him, I am not competent enough to make a vw work for any length of time.
