The suicide pact technology was Fire. Evolution is an eternal grinding competition happening at a particular scale and the suicide pact death is being induced at a much wider scale so lifeforms who slowly but inexorably destroy their habitat burning it all in a race to outdo the others will never develop a real incentive to change these behaviors before it's too late.
