Thundercats 2011 had a surprisingly passionate fandom when it was airing and I don't think people were going to bat for it disingenuously, so much as Roar made everyone go "...wait, but they already did a 'normal' reboot of it? and it loving owned but they cancelled it? WTF CN?"

e: like, it wasn't as good as say A:TLA, but it was good enough and it had furries, which is usually enough to get people going batshit crazy for something for years on end.

e2: I also just looked into it to jog my memory, and a lot of the explicit Thundercats 2011 vs. Roar rivalry came very specifically from the Teen Titans Go episode about Roar, which went pretty far out of its way to dunk on 2011 as a negative comparison to Roar, and vastly misjudged how many people still care about 2011. before that episode happened, you just had the usual "HURFA DURF CALARTS" weirdos making GBS threads on Roar and most people outside the chud bubble were willing to give it a shot; that episode expanded the bad taste to a whole lot more mouths.

e: I am not defending that take in any way, shape, or form, it's a mind-shatteringly terrible take, but it's a take that at least one entire whole-rear end country had, to the point where their followup Stitch stuff deliberately ignores the point of the movie and has Lilo explicitly abandon Stitch to fend for himself, because they loved Stitch but thought Lilo was a stupid little brat who should have been drowned.

I went ahead and looked this up just to verify what I'm talking about and uh

alright now I'm confused as hell too because I can't figure out where that came from either, despite a whole loving lot of people believing it and passing "Japan hates Lilo" around as uncontroversial fact, and the best guess to where the hell this came from seems to actually be that people apparently misinterpreted something the English dub of the Stitch anime added. and/or Kingdom Hearts fans noticing that Stitch is in there and not Lilo, combined with similarly apocryphal stories of Japanese audiences loving hating Chihiro from Spirited Away and that possibly getting telephone-gamed into Lilo.

I self owned there but it seems like I stumbled into a weird rear end rabbit hole in the process and I am genuinely curious how deep this goes

i feel like all this stuff about whether you can save a bad movie in the edit is ignoring that ZSJL is gonna be like six hours long and consist largely of new footage.

like, this is more an Exorcist: The Beginning/Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist situation where, while the movies are very visibly related (what with being two different takes on the same premise, using the same cast and same sets and etc), they're also straight-up two different movies and not two different versions of one movie. given that, the Whedon movie isn't a very good barometer of how ZSJL is gonna turn out.

Yeah, "The Snyder Cut", it turns out, was a myth and a marketing ploy. What the people who were clamoring for it are getting is going to be "The Snyder Version".

...so?

quote:

And it is still going to be an absolute disaster because its baseline factor is one Zachary Snyder.

so, like, sidebar, but this is kind of one of the things that irks me about Snyder discourse

this might shock y'all given how much I go to bat for him, but I'm not actually a huge fan of his movies. I think they're all somewhere in the area of "fine," with the primary exceptions ranking above that being Watchmen (largely because I consider the comic book unfilmable and grade the movie on a bit of a curve for successfully adapting it at all) and Man of Steel. even BvS is sort of a toss-up, because while I love all the wild rear end ideas and imagery Snyder was working with, the finished movie is janky as gently caress.

but, like... i've also seen so many worse movies, so many movies that are in an entirely different loving galaxy of bad from anything Snyder could possibly create, that this kind of statement just makes me think "motherfucker have you not heard of Tommy Wiseau or Uwe Boll or Albert Pyun." that's a lot of why i defend him: because the hatred of him seems just absolutely, bizarrely disproportionate compared to what he's actually putting out, and seems to be entirely because he's taking "sacred cow" IPs and doing weird poo poo with them.

there's a pretty solid set of expectations you can have by now going into a Snyder movie, and it's that the movie will be technically incredible, but that the script will more or less collapse under the weight of its own ambition and be somewhere on a spectrum of "dumb" to "janky as poo poo." that's nowhere near the worst a movie can be, nowhere near an "absolute disaster," and given a large majority of blockbusters just pretty much leave my mind the moment i finish them (did anyone see Bloodshot and actually remember a single moment of that movie 5 minutes after it was over?), i'll take that over those any day.

i think a good general rule that might make these derails less intolerable might be that, if you're going to talk about fans of something, you should be specific about whether you're talking about goon fans of it or about the broader fandom of it.

one thing i've noticed is that the goon fandoms for particular pieces of media tend to kinda be their own Galapagos of sorts, isolated from the rest of the fandom. usually this means the goon fandom and the non-goon fandom are operating at very different levels of toxicity; this seems to be the case with Snyder, and I can definitely say I've seen it be the case with Rick & Morty and Steven Universe, both of which have legendarily bad fandoms and yet also have pretty chill goon followings (like, a R&M animator posts over in the TVIV thread for it, which would be basically loving unthinkable in any other place that discusses the show because nobody would ever want to touch that poop).

this is generally a good thing, because it means if you like something with idiot jackass fans, SA is probably a good place to talk about it that's free of those idiot jackass fans. BUT there's also a lot of people here who just flat-out don't engage with fandoms of stuff outside of SA, and it more or less inevitably leads to... exactly this, where someone craps on the greater fandom of the thing being discussed without specifying that they're talking about non-goon fans, and then a bunch of goon fans go "HEY WHOA WE'RE NICE THOUGH."

e: actually, another good example of goons being the Good Fandom for a thing while everyone else sucks rear end would be Berserk, SA is basically the only place I've seen Berserk fans congregate where it didn't immediately turn into a parade of rape jokes

I guess there's a running vein that the Snyder fans here feel unfairly maligned or that Snyder's being incorrectly read as a crypto-fascist, but I don't know the only time I've seen any of them flip out here is when someone goes in aggro first.

which ties into what I said earlier.

people go in aggro on SA because they're used to dealing with twitter rear end in a top hat Snyder fans. Snyder fans on SA, however, are largely not even aware of the twitter assholes, so they assume they're being talked about and get defensive. this leads to the former group acting like gigantic assholes to the latter, while the latter group is mostly just incredibly confused.

I realize this is a cold take and a :can: at the same time but I'm always confused at how hardcore lefties can hold up China as an example of an ideal socialist state.

to my understanding, from basically the end of mao's tenure in power to the beginning of xi's, china was both genuinely arguable as a socialist state and a decent enough place to live.

on top of this, the USA has a way of painting any country it's at odds with as an unstable shithole that nobody would ever want to live in.

this has created an awkward situation where the main people pointing out "hey xi jinping has hosed the living hell out of china" are the ones most hardcore lefties want to ignore and oppose out of hand, despite all objective evidence pointing to the USA actually being correct on this one for once, and their preconceived notion of china as "not great but totally OK" ends up holding instead.
