I don’t think it’s aged any differently than Borat. He plays to a stereotype to get reactions. If Bruno is offensive so is Borat.

If Bruno is offensive so is Borat. i think there's some nuance in this, honestly like, Borat is effectively a cartoon character. it's hard to get offended by Borat because everything about the character is so fundamentally ridiculous that unless you're really stupid you pick up immediately that it's a joke. Bruno feels a little meaner to me because the stereotype isn't really as comically OTT and hews a lot closer to the actual thing it's stereotyping

I think the heavily scripted stuff with normal people is "staged" only in that it's non-actors who are at least somewhat in on it who are just naturally improvising and reacting. If there's a hidden camera shooting handheld style, then it's all confused extras who probably think it's real in the moment. Then there are non-actor bits where Cohen is improvising in-character and the mark has no (or only a vague) idea that it's a bit.

Decided to watch this today in light of the news and it was... fine? No where near as funny as the first one, and most of the non-reality stuff felt really forced (it might have been funny to briefly imply that Borat started Covid but dragging it out for several minutes killed it). It definitely had its moments - the QAnon lodge was great - but overall it just felt a bit desperate, like most sequels to comedy movies made over a decade after the fact. And I'm really torn on the decision to end it on a 'Remember to vote' card - I get why they did it but it makes it feel less like a movie to be watched for years to come and more like an extended YouTube video to be forgotten after this particular moment in time. Maria Bakalova did a really great job though, better than SBC in some parts (I know a lot of time has passed but his Borat impression is well below average). e: One thing I liked is that the little content warning includes 'blackface' which had me worried, but it's just the Trudeau photo. stev fucked around with this message at 01:43 on Nov 8, 2020 |

I'd say Bruno was a better movie than Borat because he did actual more setups. I just think Borat was peoples first experience with him, and in both, I was looking for him screwing with people and not the plot/character.

I think it's important to make a distinction between staged and scripted. There is stuff in all of his movies that is obviously flat out scripted. Anything going on between Borat and Azmat etc. that doesn't involve the public is scripted for obvious reasons. I'm sure in the case of the kids running to the ice cream truck and the bear popping out was 100% scripted. But I think the vast majority of his stuff would be better described as a mix of staged and guerilla filmmaking. Like, I don't think almost any of his marks are "in on it" or reading from a script or anything like that. But you can't really take what you are seeing at face value either because they are just going to edit the footage in a way that is the funniest and also misrepresent stuff to fit the story. For example, in the case of the frat guys that sued him over Borat 1. It looks like he stumbles on to an RV of frat guys on vacation, but the producers rented the bus, asked the frat guys to be in a "kazakh" show, told them to act as fratty as possible and then got them drunk. That doesn't mean it was scripted though. Similarly the Qanon guys he stays with. In the movie he just asks some random guy if he can stay with him and they agree. In reality the producers rented the house and asked the guys to be in the movie. I don't think they are ever really up front with the marks about what is going on. there's all sorts of variables beyond that though. it's not like it's always going to be "real" reactions from people, because they are surrounded by cameras, they might realize they are part of prank and just roll with it, they might just be uncomfortable and not want to rock the boat...But that's not scripted. I think the idea that he's just hired actors or something is off base but you shouldn't really take much, if any of what you see at face value. Its points about patriarchy and strong women are rather obvious and if this is what qualifies for laudably feminist storytelling that's a pretty simplistic idea of feminism.

Is it possible to watch this with subtitles for just the Kazakh dialogue? The only thing it seems I could do is turn on English close captioning which subtitled everything and was annoying as hell.

After I heard one of Borat's sons say something about Jeffrey Epstein, I knew there had to be jokes going on, so I turned on the closed captioning and saw translations for that scene, where he first meets his daughter, the Azamat chair, all of that stuff. I could only get translations with closed captioning. You all are saying you saw subtitles for those scenes which weren't closed captions of English dialogue too?
