dahl is a great pickup for a team that isn't really super expected to contend at a 3 million price point. If he gets hurt (like he always does) w/e he's 3 million, but if he ends up good he's still under team control until 2024.

but if you're the rockies well, there just comes a point where you cut bait even if keeping them is theoretically a good idea because you just get tired of 60 games a season of "potential"

this is not mets style incompetence, this is intentional. They want the good PR of changing the name, while also getting all the money from the pro-indians fans who will (hopefully, in the teams mind) spend even more money on merch this season knowing that it's going away. Then, once they actually change the name they get all the money from the non-shithead fans who are happy to buy new, not racist merch.

this is money grubbing to a serious level

Unquestionably the best Negro Leaguers were as good (or often better) than the average major leaguers. The further you get from the best players the more complicated it gets, because even if the average numbers look worse, how much of that is actual talent and how much of it is having to play on worse fields, with worse equipment, in the middle of a brutal road trip where you'd go on a bus for 12 hours, maybe get to spend a night in a local house, before playing a double header and having to hit the road again that night.

because MLB revenues are so much lower! The NBA made 8.3 billion to the MLB's tiny 3 billion!

In fact, MLB has claimed that even in a regular season they'd have lost money this season. How? Well, when you account for the fact that somehow; despite increasing revenues year after year, MLB has claimed that, magically, at most, over the last like 5 or 6 years the most profit the league has made is around 250 million more than they spend. How? well, when you define what is baseball revenue and have accountants who can turn 4 million in profit into 2 million in loses, and don't have to open the books to the players union, well, it's not hard.

to go into more detail, some of MLB's favorite tricks are including things like "stadium depreciation" as loses, even when they don't actually own the stadium they play in, or including all costs of owning minor league teams in their numbers, but somehow or another not including any of the revenue that those teams make.

honestly baseball could go so far by just like, paying all minor leaguers like, 40 grand a year or something vaguely resembling enough to pay for rent and not dying at the lower minor league levels instead of like, 20 bucks a day, 2 peanut butter sandwiches and a host family so they don't loving starve in A ball or w/e but somehow even that is too much for owners to bear.

Or, more accurately, if they did that they couldn't lowball latin american talent into taking vastly below value deals like eugenio suarez or ozzie albies took because life changing money doesn't equal the money they should be making

am I right in thinking that Joey Lucchesi used to be a pretty highly-regarded prospect?

he was a padres top 10 prospect back in 2017 in the general sense of "4 reasonably good pitches, almost certainly going to stay a starter, probably never going to be better than a 3/4 unless his fastball really improves (it didn't).

He was a lot more exciting as a college kid with a fastball that "touches 96" than a pro with a fastball that's about 90 on a good day tbh.

no. Cohen's firm invested 750 million of the 2.75 billion that Melvin Capital is getting after getting bodied over the gamestop thing. His firm wasn't the one to lose big.

It does sound a lot cooler to say "cohen's losing tons of money because of reddit" than "cohen's investing in another firm who got owned by reddit"

EDIT: Like, if Melvin Capital completely goes under and Cohen loses everything he has in the company, his net worth goes down to like...12 billion dollars. Oh no.

his argument is that he did definitely send that letter, but

quote:

Let’s back up a bit. First off, the email is real, no “fake news” argument here. I sent it, and completely forgot about it until it was released by the media. It was sent as part of a plan to do advance scouting, a plan that never came to fruition, as the organization decided to all but eliminate in-person pro scouting shortly thereafter. The plan proposed was one of using cameras to be able to better see signals coming from coaches on the bases and in the dugout. Theoretically, this was to be done by scouts in the stands at non-Astros games. Once those signals were later decoded (unlikely, but if they were), that information was to be passed on to A.J. Hinch and his staff, who would presumably use their naked eyes to pick up said signals during games. There was nothing concerning catcher signals (which scouts couldn’t see anyway), live relays or anything like that. It was just an idea, sent by someone new to the advance world who was a bit green in that area, and who didn’t think that trying to better pick up signals was even a problem. I later found out that, at the time, it was a gray area, which in and of itself is a bit embarrassing.

Which can basically be summarized as "yeah, I tried to cheat, but in a completely different way and also didn't realize it was cheating at the time". Absolutely poo poo argument, but I guess I'm more willing to accept "cheater has to go write about baseball" than "cheater goes off to run another team.

Marcell Ozuna is only 30 years old. How is he a DH-only guy at this point, did he lose all his knees or something?

even when he was young Ozuna's best defensive trait was his arm. Then he had shoulder surgery, going from a canon to a noodle. Combine that with losing a step in speed and never really developing really good defensive instincts and you go from "he can probably play center" to "well you can hide him in LF if you have to".

iirc the pirates have said that they like hayes's defense at 3B so much they've considered playing him at other positions. idk if that means SS or 2B or what, but it would be incredibly pirates as hell to make your only good player learn a new defensive position so you can bring in todd fraizer

He's in his 5th IRL season of playing, but he only has 4 years of service time, so this season was his first in arbitration. 10 mil for a first season of ARB is pretty good; off the top of my head only kris bryant at 10.5 and cody bellinger at 11.5 outdid that.

EDIT: Lolno last season was his first season of arb, but a 1.5 mil raise after covid season/his injuries isn't terrible either
