yeah :( I love this game but it's an absolute money sink for any program that isn't North Dakota, Minnesota, and maybe Boston College. Their statement said it's not COVID related but there's absolutely no way the pandemic (I think they played their whole season with an empty arena) didn't hasten things along. Every school's looking hard at their balance sheets right now and the costs of an on-campus arena are just enormous. Especially when I think RMU's enrollment is... christ, maybe 4,500? I know it's a really small school.

The sad part of that is there are high schools in Minnesota with lower enrollment with better arenas (and programs) than some of these colleges. This is even if you exclude Shattuck-St Mary's and not only in the Twin Cities. People sometimes get confused about that, but it really is Canada south up there.

It's one of those sports where if it's popular, it's really popular. If it's not, it's just a money sink because they forget to budget for maintaining/replacing expensive cooling systems. It's always disappointing to see it when one closes, but UA-H has been on the ledge for a decade about shutting it, most notably because the University of Alabama gets to control the sports budget. They can actually afford it, but it's not on the main campus and don't want to diversify their sports options because BAMA Football.

At least there are still new D-I schools moving up, St. Thomas and Arizona State, but it doesn't fill the void on the east coast.

It seemed out of the blue when I first heard about it but usually by now you hear the program was in trouble or there were big budget issues or something. To surprise literally everyone like that is really something

Augustana (SD) now with plans to bring their hockey program to D1. The school, who last year announced plans to elevate all sports to D1, was denied acceptance by the Summit League in favor of St. Thomas. It will be interesting to see what conference they try to join for hockey. Now that WCHA's commissioner left for the USHL, I'm not even sure if that league will be around much longer now.

The WCHA hit that decline as soon as Wisconsin and Minnesota announced they were leaving. And then so did all the other big hockey programs. It was a big part of my college hockey experience, but the only team that’s left of note is Mankato (and that’s not saying much).

2013 was basically the end for the conference, which is a bummer and really just okay now. I have a lot of fun memories of hating UND and UM-D. And that will never go away.

So it’s about time. Stick a fork in it. I do imagine that it’ll stick around for the women’s programs though. Unless they’re all jumping ship now too, but considering they’re adding STU I don’t think they’re going anywhere.

WCHA women aren't going anywhere. They are on firm footing with 8 teams and is arguably the best in the nation.

As for Augustana, perhaps a new 6 team conference of Augustana, the Alaskas, Arizona State, Huntsville, and Lindenwood? That would at least be based in the western of the country.

yeah I'd be stunned if the WCHA women's side disbanded anytime soon.

E: gonna be asking a lot at this point for the Alaskas to be saved, sadly.

Yes, but Alabama Huntsville will not be affording travel to Alaska twice a year though. They’d probably have to schedule it back to back weekends and just not go home that week.

All these programs are too fringe and don’t really fit together. They’re also small programs that aren’t going to get into a big conference either. There’s really not a good solution for it in D-1 hockey. Aside from getting schools that are closer to add more D-1 programs. This would be the best solution, but not one that’s going to happen. Schedule issues are definitely a thing for these teams, and adding a trip to South Dakota for what’s going to be probably too much of a cake walk isn’t going to entice anyone.

So you’re right that they need a new conference of their own, and they need to start building and making phone calls. I’d love to see a new one start up and maybe get some west coast teams to add programs. The timing is good for it with Vegas and now Seattle having teams.

One of you may know better than I, but has there ever been talk of the Alaska programs running a schedule against CHL teams instead of other NCAA teams? for all I know the NCAA wouldn't allow it but otherwise they are just so isolated, especially Fairbanks, that I can't really see a way for them to work.

While I agree that a conference of all those schools may not be practical, Huntsville (or at least a spokesperson) said they were willing to shell out $25k to teams that would travel there so the money is there, at least in the short term. The stipulation with them from leadership was that in order to keep going they had to find a conference for this year. From what I understand travel costs are not necessarily an issue for them. It's getting other schools to go down there that was holding them back.

Gotcha. It was travel the other way around.

Still a big fan of Huntsville having a program, but being in a conference with Alaska programs would only be a stop gap and not solve their issue of being in a part of the country without hockey programs. But good luck convincing schools in that part of the country to have hockey teams (or anything that isn’t men’s football, baseball, basketball, etc).

That's definitely going to help but the B1G still runs though Minnesota and Wisconsin. I will say it was a shame they no-contested their tournament game last year because I would have loved to see how they matched up with Duluth. That likely still favored Duluth pretty well but I think it would have been a really fun game.

E: oh hey they play Duluth this year in the icebreaker tourney. hell yeah.

It makes me laugh that St Thomas gets too good and needs to go to D1 and they're expected to be the basement team in their new conference.

I'm expecting Michigan to be really hard to beat in the Big10, but you never know with Minnesota and Wisconsin. The Gopher roster always feels sparse until the season starts, but it will be interesting to see how Chaz Lucius does on the college level.

St. Thomas will be fine. Short term, getting blown out each game in most sports is just the cost of doing business going from D3 to D1. Long term looks good. A new “near campus” arena will be announced soon and more scholarships will be added next year (in addition to the 6 left on the table this season). The consensus among fans is that are just happy to be D1 and if beatdowns are part of the process then so be it.
