I started streaming this week, typically around 5-6pm PST, as a friend wanted to run me through the Dark Souls trilogy. We’ve been going at it daily and just finished the first one last night (dark lord ending baby!) and immediately started the second one. Still fairly new and don’t really know how twitch works fully.

Constructive feedback would be enjoyed.

Heya lovely folks. My name's Andrew but I go by Kittens a lot on Twitch. I stream an anti-anxiety aurora kitty cam at night with all the relaxing video game music I can find. On the weekdays I do gaming and conversation during the day. I'm on EST, no set schedule on the gaming portion as I'm at the whims of health and Mrs. The Kittens' schedule.

Gaming-wise I'm all over the place. Been starting all my streams with Tetris Effect Recently, the odd Hades run or two, and finished up Super Mario 64 120 stars because I missed playing through it. I tend to keep things as chill and supportive as possible but it doesn't take much to get my lefty blood riled up (even if it goes down about as quickly).

It'd be nice to have y'all here if you need to take a break or any of the previous sounds appealing <3

My wife and I are going to do a Dwarf Fortress stream on my channel most likely at 6:00 PM EST today. We stream every day, but we try to stream Dwarf Fortress on Sundays.

It's usually some combination of my wife (their channel), our best friend (his channel) and I. We primarily do RTS games, but we're open to games of a particular aesthetic.
    Recently Streamed Games
  • Caves of Qud
  • Impossible Creatures
  • Night in the Woods
  • Mind Scanners (release date: 2021 edit: I'm so sorry I can't read numbers, you can support the official release by wishlisting it on Steam)
  • Black Mesa
  • Grow Home
  • Hearthstone (Lykios)
  • Vermintide (Lykios)
  • Dwarf Fortress (Eurymachus)
Here's our channel trailer for HachikoExe: (my wife made it)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESkDhM-lBuk

Here's the VOD from the first stream we ran after I made a post on SomethingAwful, thanks to everybody for showing up:

If you stream crafts my friend Alli is a local cosplayer who makes all of our own costumes and she was the only person willing to listen to me back in March when I told her people needed to start making masks. She's done a phenomenal job making a variety of masks for people with disabilities, she's an incredibly hard worker. I'd love to point her in the direction of craft streamers / cosplayers / seamstress streamers (and I will be linking her to every person in this thread that posts here that fits that description) because she doesn't know a lot of locals that craft.

Here's the VOD!

A lot of folks turned up and we all had a great time. I'm super thankful for this thread. My wife really only has the chance to do this game once a week but they've played the game since high school.

Right now we're playing Adventure Mode as a dwarf named MEGAGIMLI who is trying to charm a harem of hot elf boyfriends to serve as his personal guard and the foundation of his fortress. We're introducing our non-Dwarf-playing viewers to the concept of animal punching bags. We started off training our wrestling with a kestrel. We're trying to get better equipment for our "gym," but we've had some issues holding onto our first horse.

My fun Dwarf Fortress fact is that I wrote an essay about it for Turtle Beach's "Your beautiful game" competition and got first place. I won a PS4, XBox One, WiiU, and a bunch of gaming headsets. For writing an essay about a game I'd never really played, for a competition where they DEFINITELY expected a CoD or GTA to win. My achievements are enshrined on DF's wikipedia page to this very day.

Unrelated!

Thanks for the kind words about my streams! I've tried to drop in to as many folks as possible/raid etc.

Streaming Dwarf Fortress has been very fun for us. There's a lot of opportunity to craft a story with your viewers.

As a viewer who doesn't know much about Dwarf but enjoys watching people play it, I do think mucking around with how it looks on screen is important, but that's my wife's territory. I only suggest color schemes and give my opinion on the cute Wingdings.

I WILL say that we DO have to have a screen loaded up behind the game itself for when the game crashes and we reload the game, but we found a cute solution.

I know this is more of a streamer topic than a gamer topic, but, I'm curious - would anyone be interested in a really basic guide on how to set up your Twitch channel (not basic things like "how to set up your anime avatar," stuff like "here's how to make sure your stream is accessible to the widest number of people," the most basic being something along the lines of "please set up noise cancelling") and common mistakes people make when trying to go for affiliate?

I'm just new to posting here and it would be my first thread.

I'm just new to posting here and it would be my first thread.

I was actually putting something like this together, but it was basically "talk to your chat/be sure to moderate/raid folks to branch out to new audiences/be aware of the parasocial bonds that might form and consider that it might be just you chatting and playing games for you, but for some viewers it might mean more so be careful", but this sounds much more involved, so yes please!

I'm still not sure about the ethics of the "hype train" (it seems really crass to me to encourage people to spend money because there is a timer), and I don't know whether having conspicuous "X is the longest subscriber" things is a good idea. Basically I am hella conflicted about how Twitch gamifies spending money. Also I am a hundred years old and I don't understand Twitch.

Edit: I'm also live now doing a crossword. It's FANCY FRIDAY where I dress up nice, and encourage the chat to do the same. It's nice to look nice!

Affiliate means you can get subscribers (which costs money, some of which you get), and people can "cheer" you, which is basically throwing pennies your way.

You can also create custom emotes for your subscribers to use (which they can use in other people's streams, presumably to advertise you in a small way?) and set different subscriber levels.

Subscription is different from following, both because of the above, and also because subs get ad free viewing.

Finally, you can make some cash! If you earn more than $100 in a month, you get it around the fifteenth of the next month.

I've done my best to raid (sending all your viewers to someone else's stream when your stream ends) other goon streams. I recommend it as a way of boosting potential viewers for both the raider and the raid-ee!
