I noticed the spanish speaking world seem to like Kent, which remind me Eddie Meduza seems to be popular in Mexico for some reason.

Who was Eddie Meduza?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Meduza

quote:

He was also a popular performer of so called Raggarmusic. Norstedt's other persona was the far more vulgar E. Hitler.[1] In this guise he generally recorded more offbeat or even puerile recordings like "E.Hitler skiter" (a recording of his own bowel movements) to sexually explicit material. The E. Hitler recordings were only available on tape, that customers would order by mail directly from Norstedt. He did, however, have a certain deeper humorous line as well. On tour (as Eddie Meduza) he urged his audience to drink vodka, and become just as drunk as he usually was himself during his performances, to the tunes of his "Mera brännvin" ("More booze!").[2]

Norstedt also recorded serious rockabilly songs with a distinct 1950s flavour in his own studio, called Studio Ronka[1] (ronka or runka is Swedish slang for masturbation, similar to wanking in English). He played most of the instruments himself. He often got bad reviews from the press, notably Expressen journalist Mats Olsson, to which Norstedt replied by writing even more offensive songs, such as "Kuken står på Mats Olsson" (Mats Olsson has a hard-on), "Mats Olsson är en jävla bög" (Mats Olsson is a drat fag) and "Mats Olsson runkar kuken" (Mats Olsson is wanking his cock). He reportedly said that no matter what he did it was never good enough for the critics.[3]

More booze:

In this video he sings about how booze is actually good for you. Eddie meduza died unrelatedly of liver failure.

This is a helluva thread, just discovered ya'll yesterday

Kent did translate one album to English waaay back in the mid 90's. It just happens to be one of the best ones; isola

Here's "747" from isola

Another classical song of the other classical swedish category is the band ATTACK's one hit wonder - if someone really wanted to get drunk swedes to sing with them nothing beats this. It's famous in Finland too, and is apparently a standard curriculum item in 2nd language swedish class. I present,
"Ooa hela natten"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6--EOazgwM0

'Ooa' is boomer slang for masturbating. The chorus goes "i will masturbate all night, masturbate all day, masturbate all night and frighten half the city - masturbate all the night long until you discover me. Aao. AaoAoAoo." The lyrics is specificly about a woman being horny on a beautiful person and is singing at them, and that she would like to "bang" them, as it were.

The fear drips like poison and soaks in like a kiss
I am the trap, imprisoned without a hope
want to open a door, I close and don't get out

Cant speak for Finland but never heard anyone in Sweden sharing that intepretation of the songs lyrics, neither is it slang for masturbation (in Sweden anyway). So, doubtful that it is the interpretation intended by the Swedish music group at least. Interesting that some Finns intrepet it that way, that certainly puts another spin on the song.
But "Ooa" in the context of the song is, in the ears of most Swedes, onamatopoetic, a dog-like howling which they kinda imitate in the song's refrain.

Pretty straight forward and silly song if you take the lyrics at face value, about pining for someone and literally howling all day for their attention, with one paragraph going into stalker territory.

Man, this song is not really a song anymore. The song is so ubiquitus that It's like a piece of furniture that's been standing in a corner for ever. You don't really reflect on it. If it plays on the radio, it's difficult to really even hear it - rather you kind of nod in acceptance and think "yeah, this old thing".

The name of the song means "summertimes" and it's just a happy song about summer, and something's going on, the city is glowing and there's lips against lips, and then there's a gigantic chorus that everyone can shout along to. If you look closely at the picture, you might see that the guy on the left is Per Gessle of Roxette fame. This was his earlier band, and they were enormous in Sweden at the time with many hits that are still played on the radio. I believe this was the biggest of them all. I don't think there are many Swedes over thirty that don't recognize this song.

I was always a fan of "När vi två blir en":

What is a soldier but a miserable pile of eaten cats and strange language?
There was a very prolific Finnish songwriter Juha Vanio, who made many touching songs like:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfUUtjCsucc

"Kotkan poikii ilman siipii" or "Sons of eagles without wings", the name is a pun on his home city of Kotka (the word also means eagle), about how life tends to break your dreams and how the wounded wings of an eagle cub didn't carry far.

And the he did some very very vulgar ones, like Kumi-Roope (Rubber-Robert), which is a parody of Rosvo-Roope (Robert the Robber/Pirate). The original is a song for a movie about the pirate, this version is about a man who sells condoms in the countryside:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5tsXXmMvyg

It feature lyrical wonders like "ei kuminsyönti vienyt lapsentekokykyä / mut paska tulee paketissa tätä nykyä" (eating rubber didn't stop me from procreating / but nowadays my poo poo comes in a capsule) about a duden who doesn't understand how condoms work. And this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FviEFAOB8_I
´
"Always in my mind", where the thing always in the mind of the song person is a vagina.

Vainio had serious issues with alcohol and while he did manage to stay sober for years later in his life he died in his fifties. He had real talent for singing super vulgar songs with a straight face.

Cornelius was perhaps Swedens most successful and influential troubadours or his time, he was a dutch immigrant that moved to Sweden with his family when he was 12 years old, as I understand it he also made songs written in Dutch as well but I've never heard any of these and as I understand it he wasn't very popular in the Netherlands, he was quite huge here in Sweden however.

Here's a song that is simultaneously in Swedish (Anna Nordell) and Danish ("Johnny Deluxe" idk his real name). Time for some stone cold chinese classics (ok maybe some are just my taste)

First is Tian Mi Mi which is like, the ballad to know. If you know only one classic Chinese megahit, make it this one. This was basically the "we can have a music industry???" for mainlanders and is a great tune to boot https://youtu.be/0l9y1Dw1_0g

For a more modern song might I recommend Nan Shan Nan https://youtu.be/kqJ9a_EoBx8 which again Im biased and can't find on youtube the goddamn stage show performance that made me really love this song. A but of an odd song as it doesn't do the part every one thinks of when they think of this song until, like, the very end.

Again, a language I don't speak from a country I'm not from. But I've been watching the Swedish show Så mycket bättre lately, which involves musicians doing covers of each other's songs. This season put out some real bangers.
My favourites:
Maxida Märak's cover of the Arvingarna song Eloise. Märak's version is much better if you've heard how Beach Boys-y the original is.

Daniel Adams-Ray's cover of Maxida Märak's song Jåhkåmåhkke (Jokkmokk). The original, which is lovely, has no words (I think it's a joik ?), so Adams-Ray's cover is essentially an original song. The guest singer at the end is Märak's mum.

The Finnish version of the show, Vain Elämää, has also resulted in some good stuff. Pyhimys and the Teflon Brothers' cover of Anne Mattila's Perutaan Häät is my favourite just because everyone's reactions make me laugh.

Here's some popular Japanese songs you've probably heard in memes but didn't know much about.

Yoshi Ikuzo - Ora Tokyo sa Iguda (I'm going to Tokyo)

This got a fairly recent EDM remix but this is the original. It tells the story of a man who is unfulfilled by his antiquated home town, vowing to move to Tokyo. However, being from so far out in the country he has no idea about city life, and his plans for Tokyo life include keeping cattle and pulling a horse and cart. For most of his career the singer was a rather straight faced Enka singer but this is one of his rarer upbeat hits.

EDIT: Almost forgot, very recently he did a special version to advertise Resident Evil: VIllage which plays on the lyric "I hate this village" ("Konna mura iya da")
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmL_LzDtl4k Hopefully this works in all regions

Kohmi Hirose - Promise

The song from the "Get Down" meme is actually a love song about (possibly empty) promises of eternal love. The lady herself has a fairly interesting back story as well, she mainly got into singing because she wanted to meet Michael Jackson, going so far as to move to LA and take lessons from his vocal coach. She recently got a second wind of popularity in Japan thanks to her Youtube channel where she does slightly unhinged piano covers of popular songs.

And finally, not a great song (definitely not timeless at least) but worth mentioning in this context: Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - PON PON PON

I think this was passed around a lot at the time as a "lol Japan is weird" type thing but they missed the point that this song and the video was made specifically to be as weird as possible (without being offensive) and for the few short years that Kyary was bankable she milked that aesthetic as hard as she could.
