Beartaco posted:Benee (pronounced Benny, not like Renée) is a really good pop artist in New Zealand. She released a Te Reo Māori cover of one of her songs which gets a lot of play when Māori Language week rolls around each year. I like it a lot, and not just because the alternative is whatever middle aged acoustic guitar player they can find that can speak the language. How are you posting an NZ tune and not also posting this classic?! Every schoolkid should know the Poi E tune, if not the lyrics - it was one of the first Te Reo songs to gain mainstream appeal in New Zealand and forty years after Pātea Māori Club hit Poi E was written, its legacy continues for the next generations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQLUygS0IAQ Here's another one that's easy to sing along to - Kora released a Te Reo version of their classic tune Politician https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnNE72vbrH4

I really should have checked this thread earlier, LOK and Lillasyster and Cornelis and even Galenskaparna & After Shave were already posted huh I'm just gonna take the opportunity to post what I think might be the best song from the latter gang; Pappa, Flytta Inte in till Tjörn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hdnRAYFm5M A song where a father explains to his adult son that he (the father) has to move from the island they live on, to go to the city to get an education for a new job, because the fish saltery where he works has been closed. The son tries to make him stay, and is sad that his father has to move to the city... which is less than an hour's travel by boat away. So for something that hasn't been represented, the big classic Ishockeyfrisyr by De Lyckliga Kompisarna: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCn_-TZzQI0 A song about the haircut known in Swedish as the "hockey 'do". It's a mullet. And then someone who was a big one for me growing up, the guy who was my first idol: Robert "Robban" Broberg (who passed away in 2015). He did many humorous songs, and many songs about women (and the two categories very frequently overlapped), not shying away from going risqué—for example, he has one song where he plays a German salesman trying to sell the listener a blow-up doll. He also had a period in the seventies where he did some more tonally serious music and towards the end of the decade almost quit music, but made a comeback in the eighties and kept going for essentially the rest of his life, his final live show and album happening in 2011. He made songs in both Swedish and English, and was also the host for a children's TV program in 1970. Anyway, here's Ingela, a song about a girl who's so beautiful she causes traffic accidents due to all the guys turning to look at her instead of keeping their eyes on the road: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dycbGSuBnmA

His Divine Shadow posted:Swedish country And an interesting tidbit, in this part of the lyrics about his dog: "He is wise and fine and the taxes are paid If you get that, then I'm happy" Is what i assume referencing "Hundskatten" (the dog tax), a yearly municipal expense tax dog-owners had to pay in Sweden. The tax was abolished in the 90s. This might surprise some more than others since AFAIK some countries still have a canine tax. Falukorv has a new favorite as of 01:59 on Feb 1, 2023 |

Vörjeans (pronounced virgins) are a fake band by actual band KAJ. Their pretend story is they're from Vörå and they wear jeans, hence VörJeans. Any similarity to another word was accidental and the band members does not realize this, except occasionally and they just suppress it hard. They're a riff on the "ragger" subculture which is rockabilly, denim, booze and american cars. A local subset is the Volvo Ragger which replaces american cars with old Volvos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwhNBpn6eG4
