Yeah, it's weird to me that this game is both super cartoony in its basic mechanics and concept, but also, the art style and the plot are way too grounded to work with that? Like, if the graphical design was more colorful and characters were more cartoonish, your wacky antics and mayhem would just gel better, instead of just coming off so self-aggrandizing with the very sincere main plot where you make an anarchic space to resist the hegemony of strip malls.

They're awkward for sure, but they're a weirdly interesting part of Tony Hawk games for me. Like, even with his name on the cover and a good bit of all the characters going "Holy poo poo, it's Tony Hawk!" his games do make a point to include a whole bunch of the other big names in skateboarding. Guys who definitely don't have the clout to have their own game, but they get an appearance, name drop, and the requisite fawning about how cool they are. It's a nice bit of sharing the spotlight and trying to make these games a face for "skateboarding culture" rather than just Tony Hawk himself.
