You've got to create the illusion of choice or people might realise you're just another landlord.

When I was switching suppliers after moving to my new flat, uSwitch asked me what tariff I was currently on and there were like fifty different ones just from British gas lol

Decided to go for SSE because they had the cheapest looking dual gas/electricity thing without a smart meter, because the only tangible benefit they can offer is me only having to remember to pay one gas/electricity landlord, and also my landlord's landlord who owns the building has some clause in the contract about changing utilities infrastructure, and I couldn't be bothered to ask for permission. Plus, they're all in a communal cupboard and no one else has one so I thought they might say no.

Then I started getting spam calls, like multiple times a day. Googled the number and it's SSE trying to upgrade me to a smart meter, so I answered and spent about ten minutes trying to explain to the guy that I didn't really want to make an appointment until I had checked whether I'm allowed a smart meter, before just giving up and hanging up the call.

plus if I stay here next year I will have absolutely no hesitation about swapping supplier again, and sounds like the smart meter would make that a faff

also the internet landlords have decided that there's absolutely no way they can use the existing internet line so I have to ask my landlord and probably my landlord's landlord for permission to drill an unspecified number of holes in order to get a new one installed if I ever want to have wired internet

The era of electrical choice at least involved some interesting motors and generators. And motor-generators, for converting from one to the other when the wrong electric was coming in.

Also fires, but some of those were intentional to run the hot air motors.

Inverters and converters and variable frequency drives are cheap enough now that the great current wars are mostly an irrelevance and the whole thing could be manages as some sort of national grid.

What a weird thing to say. What does the fact that I’m a UK/US dual citizen have to do with anything? Am I known as a great booster of American dominance? A tireless defender of a country I’ve literally never lived in? Maybe I should spit on my dead mum’s ashes for daring to be from a place. Good to know that immediately springing to having a pop at someone’s heritage after the mildest criticism is a preview of the attitude of an independent Northern England.

Also, regardless of your party’s position, the North is 100% culpable in imperial crimes. I seem to remember ships launched from Liverpool getting into some shenanigans.

So debenhams goes under taking 12k jobs with it (although wikipedia suggests they employ almost twice that and bbc does seem to mention theyve already cut 6k jobs) from an annual revenue of over £2billion.

The UK has a round 12k fishers (~60% Scottish) catching £0.9billion of fish a year.

I guess fishing has lots of associated businesses, maintaining boats etc and some specialist skillsets but still it seems like... maybe some priorities need a looking at when it comes to protecting jobs.

That Labour shouldn't waste its effort opposing the deportation of British citizens.

Or, more charitably: that people in the North do not care about the issue, as evidenced by Tory MPs not caring about the issue. This is the most charitable, value-neutral reading I can muster, and is still horrible.
