Obviously Bava needs to have another crack at this. I believe the only two movies he burned last time were Kill, Baby Kill!, and Twitch of the Death Nerve. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think his eligible films would be:

The Girl Who Knew Too Much
Black Sunday
Black Sabbath
Blood and Black Lace
Planet of the Vampires
Five Dolls for an August Moon
Hatchet for the Honeymoon
Baron Blood
Lisa and the Devil
Shock

It has, like, background story content and monster design that could have been turned into a cool horror movie - I'll absolutely agree with you there. But the executed style/tone/plot is all straight action as far as I can see.

There are some fleeting moments of horror, more so than most kaiju films but I agree not enough to actually make it horror. Mako's flashback is a key moment that is pretty drat scary and closer to horror than most kaiju films get. I also think some of the kaiju attack scenes are at least horror adjacent because you've got these guys fighting a losing battle in the middle of the night out on a huge body of water, and they're dying horrifically.

An idea I had was putting GdT with James Whale, the stuff Del Toro still has left has a very gothic feel to it that I think would fit nicely with Old Dark House and Bride of Frankenstein.

The teams aspect is unwieldy now, but I do think it'll pay off once all the teams are established and we get this thing going. I'm looking forward to having like, a team or two that I will have a rooting interest in just like a real sport. And the fact that most of the teams were put together with some sort of common theme is important, the teams will make sense and won't feel random.

Was thinking about crab monsters and how the Harryhausen film Mysterious Island has a great giant crab scene. Anyway it occurred to me that Harryhausen should've been included in this but I guess we just don't think of him as a horror director(and he wasn't even a director, his place in film history is pretty unique). But he's certainly a monster/creature guy.

The vote itself was actually kinda tough because I tend to side more with dumb schlock like Bloody Mary over the usual Swanberg film. And Silver Bullets is definitely a Swanberg film. In the end the tiebreaker was the rest of this team that STAC put together, there are some films in there that I'd like to check out more so than what Lambert still has in the chamber.

Couldn't disagree more. It's a movie with very little dialogue, that's true. But it sets up a mystery(who is she and what is she doing with these men?) and gives you breadcrumbs of new information with each scene. Each scene has a very clear purpose, including the cake scene, and many of them have unbearable tension. Not to mention, like you said, one of the most memorable scenes of horror in recent memory and a knockout finale.

It's also a movie that benefits from multiple viewings because once you know everything that's revealed by the end it's interesting to rewatch the performance with that in mind. And it's a great performance.

Edit: Always a good idea to quote the thing you want spoiler tagged!

If you were bored that's one thing, that's so subjective that it's hard to argue with. But I can't think of a single scene in the movie that I would call padding. Every single scene moves the story forward in a way that is important and I'd have a hard time coming up with anything to cut. The cake scene you mentioned, for example, is a crucial moment of the character's development.

I enjoyed The Red Queen Kills Seven Times quite a bit. It's true that it's an example of style over substance, but sometimes if the style is good enough it can become the substance and I think that's what happened here. The color palette, the locations, the costumes, the beautiful women, it's just very very nice to look at no matter what frame you happen to stop on. The plot is manages to be both convoluted and also predictable for anyone who's a giallo veteran, but I liked that it allowed me to mostly figure it out by the end.

The red/black thing is the main draw of the movie though in my opinion. It does the standard giallo thing where it gives you an opening scene that kinda sets the stage for everything that will happen, and this includes the visuals because you've got a Red Queen and a Black Queen. Almost every scene in the movie has some sort of representation of this, especially when it's throwing suspects and possibilities at you. I have to admit, I'm a sucker for this stuff, clear and strong color palettes that define the look of a film. It's not necessarily the sort of thing that requires a director be Kubrick to pull off, and yet you can win me over pretty easily with it even if the rest of the film has major flaws.

Hard to imagine any giallo fan not wanting to seek this out and at least give it a shot. If there's any subgenre that exemplifies style as substance it's giallo.

My votes will be for The Bloodstained Butterfly and Under the Skin.

Truth be told I enjoyed The Red Queen Kills Seven Times more than The Bloodstained Butterfly, but it just couldn't compete with Under the Skin. I haven't even rewatched Under the Skin yet, and I plan to in the next few days, but I feel comfortable with voting now because it's such a clear decision.

As I tend to do with these matchups, I didn't really try to use any objective criteria. It's all about the type of films I like and what I want to see more of. So while I think you can argue that I Stand Alone is the better film, it's just not anything I'd ever seek out on my own or really enjoy. The Bloodstained Butterfly was a bit too dry and meandering for my taste(I love pretty pictures and mindless titillation!), but it still is very nice looking and has enough of that giallo flair for me to give it the vote. And yea count me as another one who didn't want to vote against two giallo teams.

I've still got Bava in there as a #2 seed so I'm hopeful that he gets to have a nice little run. Although giallo seems to be a divisive subgenre, like even if Bava drew Blood and Black Lace I feel like there would be people who would vote against it.

Yea I mean that's kinda the issue. People around here are really split on Italian horror in general. Some like Argento but don't like Bava. Some like more traditional giallo and some prefer Argento's more fantastical surreal films. Some don't like Italian horror altogether. So it's hard to get enough people behind one film to win a vote.

For Your Consideration: Bones

This isn't the first time I've praised Bones here, and my sense is that a decent number of folks have re-discovered it in the past few years. Hard to believe that the film will be 20 years old soon, but unfortunately as time has gone by it's been mostly remembered as the "Snoop Dogg horror movie". There's a certain connotation to that, as if Snoop's presence is a gimmick, or that the film itself is nothing more than a vehicle for his music career. Nothing could be further from the truth, and all it takes to realize that is a quick glance at the credits.

People tend to forget that Bones is directed by Ernest Dickerson, who really is an important artist in the history of black filmmakers. Also the director of Demon Knight, a film that, aside from just being a great movie, is celebrated for it's choice of Jada Pinkett-Smith as the main protagonist. Dickerson's debut film, Juice, is an important piece of cinema for it's time that too often gets overlooked today. His career goes way beyond just directing though; Dickerson shot several of Spike Lee's essential films including Do The Right Thing and Malcom X.

So when you look at the choice of Dickerson as director, and for his part, the choice that Dickerson made in deciding to work on this project with Snoop Dogg, you know immediately that this is no joke. This is a legit piece of horror that is affecting, stylish, thought provoking, and a hell of a lot of fun all at the same time. Looking at some of the negative reviews of the film at the time of it's release, a common criticism was that it's not original, it's too derivative. But 20 years on, the love for the genre on display is obvious to anyone who sees the film. Is it a bit of a mish-mash of things you've probably seen in other movies? Sure, but when you combine those things with the unique presence of Snoop Dogg, a well-rounded supporting cast including Pam Grier, and the vision of Dickerson, you've got something that has to be one of the more underrated horrors of the 21st century.

The themes are audacious for 2001, and the lack of subtlety actually works very well because obviously these issues have only become more and more relevant as time went on. Jimmy Bones is a beloved figure in his community, and death comes at the hands of corrupt cops who are helping to poison that community with drugs. Years later, there is an attempt to rehabilitate the neighborhood by renovating Jimmy Bone's house and turning it into a thriving business. But the betrayal of Bones can't be buried forever and for the neighborhood to move on his spirit has to be reckoned with once and for all. It's a story about trying to move forward without reconciling with the past, and the problems that can arise from that. It's something that seems to be a never-ending conflict in our country; that we want so badly to leave the past behind but without having to properly face up to it. And that will never work, the wounds continue to fester and create new horrors.

But like I said before, the movie is also a lot of fun. Snoop as a horror icon(I hesitate to call him a villain) is every bit as fun as you might imagine, and every scene has some sort of weird happening that makes it memorable. This isn't a slasher where people just get cut up, there's a ton of imagination in this film and I can't see how anyone would be bored watching it. If there's one criticism, it's that Bones was made in 2001, and so it has some of the flaws you might expect for a film with special effects in 2001. But I think it's great just as it is, I wouldn't want a version of Bones with more restraint, or less imagination.

Full Disclosure: I haven't yet seen Butterfly Kisses. But I would ask everyone to at least give Bones strong consideration because it represents everything that's good and important about the horror genre.

I feel like the last shot may be a nod to Tarkovsky?

Anyway for this matchup I'm voting for Zombi 2. I think most Fulci fans even acknowledge that it's not his best film but this is a situation where we have an apples and oranges comparison. So for me it's less about which film is better, and more about which type of film I prefer. And Haneke just never did it for me. I'll never seek out one of his movies, I'll never want to rewatch the ones I've seen. Movies like Zombi 2, and plenty of Fulci's others, are obviously flawed but they have a gonzo energy to them that you can't find almost anywhere else.

When it comes to horror I'm a pizza and beer guy and needless to say Haneke does not fit that mold.

There's something great about owning these kind of down and dirty cult films on UHD. As someone who grew up with cable t.v. and VHS I just never imagined we'd be seeing stuff like Fulci or even Carpenter treated with this level of respect. Like, last week when I watched They Live it was a surreal experience seeing that Piper/Keith David brawl in 4k/HDR. It's cool to see those kind of important cinema moments preserved at this level of quality in a way that I can own at home.
