I'd cut Pacific Rim, personally. I know there's been an omnibus acceptance of kaiju in recent horror challenges, and I wasn't part of the original discussion that made that happen but I'd wager it has something to do with how well the original Godzilla works as a horror movie combined with the difficulty of determining without actually watching it whether a given kaiju movie is going to be in that vein or not. Pacific Rim we've seen and suspect we can all agree up front really is not, there's no need to hunt down information about it before you gamble about spending your time on it - it's very comfortably sitting over in action movie land.

If that was not in fact the reason and kaiju movies are just in because giant monsters are cool enough to hang out at the horror table even when they are not remotely horror then ok I'm down with that, but PR definitely sticks out.

That is a nice succinct way of phrasing my objection to it. Good :smug:, well done.

Edit: My nomination, because how could we not do it? The numbers are perfect. It's destiny.

Team David:

David Cronenberg
1. The Brood
2. Scanners
3. Dead Zone
4. Existenz

David Lynch
5. Eraserhead
6. Mulholland Drive

I actually think Pacific Rim has more horror bits in it than a lot of other kaiju films but I'm fine with leaving it out, I'm not gonna seriously argue that it's a horror movie.

It has, like, background story content and monster design that could have been turned into a cool horror movie - I'll absolutely agree with you there. But the executed style/tone/plot is all straight action as far as I can see.

I'll give you the flashback, I had forgotten that bit and it is a little different tonally from the rest of the movie.

Unrelated: STAC, was there something disqualifying about Miike that he didn't make your last-tournament nominations there or do you just not have time to filter his filmography for what's horror? No blame if it's the latter, I don't know that I'd have time for a task that big either.

Miike was, like, #2 in the tournament last time, so I assumed he, and Russell, and Yuzna, were all kinda left on the cutting room floor to give spots to three new names.

That would make sense, but STAC did add Yuzna so I don't think that was it.

STAC Goat posted:

My only objection to this is I was assuming someone would do "Cronenberg & Son" with Possessor making such a splash.

I can see and respect the angle, but I like the feeling of continuity Team David provides; they met as rivals in the last tournament, but neither Lynch's humanism nor Cronenberg's clinical curiosity were enough to tie up the full package. Now they can set aside their differences and crush all comers. Part of it is also about the specific films they each have left to draw from - The Brood and Eraserhead are an interesting package. I'd be a lot more inclined to do Cronenberg & Son if Videodrome was still up to join Possessor.

Also, check this out:

The Nephilim
Brandon Cronenberg
1. Antiviral
2. Possessor
Jennifer Lynch
3. Surveillance
4. Hisss
5. Chained
Asia Argento
6. DeGenerazione

OK, Asia is maybe a stretch here since DeGenerazione is an anthology she directed one segment of and hell if I know whether it's available anywhere - open to other suggestions for the last spot.

Swap out Asia Argento for Panos Cosmatos, son of George P. Cosmatos, and we've got Mandy and Beyond the Black Rainbow to play with.

Hmm, torn here - this feels a little bit like breaking theme. I think today more people know Panos' name than George's even though he had more widely-seen films. If I relax my original interpretation to be more about output than personal reputation it maybe works, though - Tombstone is pretty widely beloved and I think I've seen more positive than negative reactions to Leviathan around here even if it's not anyone's favorite.

Plus, initial research suggests that De Generazione is the opposite of accessible.

e: and there's another vote for the swap right above this post, so yeah, let's do that.

Letterboxd thinks we should also count Fear X for Refn, while IMDB just calls it a thriller - has anyone here seen it to weigh in?

It's your suggestion, so make sure you're happy with the team! My other option to replace Asia Argento would be Luke Scott, son of Ridley, who made Morgan in 2016. Fits your original vision a little better and we can get Panos in via Team Psychedelia or similar

I really like the Luke Scott idea since I had no idea that was even a person who existed, thanks. Officially giving Panos up to the loving arms of Richard Stanley and...whoever fills it out. Adrian Lyne came up in Discord and seems like a good fit, but the team wasn't my idea so I'm not going to be the one to formalize it.

Not vetted for accessibility, pulling from letterboxd:

Nobuhiko Ōbayashi
1. House
2. School in the Crosshairs
3. The Drifting Classroom
4. The Discarnates
5. Lovely Devils
6. Remembrance
7. Reibyo densetsu; something tells me this one might be tough to source

I hope six of these are possible to find I had no idea he'd done horror besides House until I went looking to slot him into a team.

OK I promise this will be my last nomination post unless nobody else gets around to cleaning up a Miike nom. There are again some anthologies in here and I'm not entirely clear how we're dicing those up, but I'm throwing in everything letterboxd has to be safe:

Kuei Chih-Hung
1. The Boxer's Omen
2. Bewitched
3. Hex
4. Corpse Mania
5. The Bamboo House of Dolls
6. Curse of Evil
7. The Killer Snakes
8. Ghost Eyes
9. Spirit of the Raped
10. Hex After Hex
11. Hex vs. Witchcraft
12. The Criminals, Part 5: The Teenager’s Nightmare
13. Fearful Interlude
14. The Criminals, Part 2: Homicides

Lam Nai-Choi
1. The Seventh Curse
2. The Cat
3. Her Vengeance
4. The Peacock King
5. Erotic Ghost Story
6. The Ghost Snatchers

Someone who wants to make more executive decisions than I do should dig into the modern Indonesian scene; you could put together a solid team out of Joko Anwar and Kimo/Timo, but there's a bunch of edge-case thriller stuff/shorts/co-directed productions to sort out.

That was harder than I thought it was going to be with 40 votes. Made some painful cuts based on a combination of desperation + already knowing I can't find half the films the team is putting up and my schedule these days doesn't really work for group streams (sorry Deb + porn, blame Carlos Atanes).

Anti-Christ resides on the hallowed list of good first date movies, alongside Possession and Audition. There are some other niche candidates if you already know a little about their specific tastes, but those are the three go-tos for a totally blind meeting.

Human Lanterns is one of the lesser wuxia horrors in my view, but it's still pretty fun.

I can see why some people dig Dr. Sleep and it has a few chunks I enjoyed, but a whole lot more that should have been cut and the entire mess just ends up being a little below Flanagan-average. I think a big part of this is that I was never that into the original, either movie or book, so I don't really have any nostalgia to tap into and I don't care how deftly it ties them together.

I don't hate Dr. Sleep, and I won't blame anyone for not being able to look past some of the content in Human Lanterns, but it easily takes the win for me. It's a great title that delivers on what it promises.

I have a shameful love for Phantom of the Opera, but Schumacher's version sucks and I've never even heard of Bruiser. Last time I watched a Romero movie I'd never heard of it turned out to be Martin, so I like his odds here. I enjoyed the Evil Dead remake but it's far from invincible and Kurosawa's pretty consistently interesting. Looking forward to this one.

That was an interesting interview, thanks for posting it Fran. A little surprising, too, to hear Noe's thoughts on Climax and about its reception - I thought one of the most striking things about it was that the movie didn't feel like it was having any fun or in on any of the jokes. Plenty of the characters were having a blast, but there's never any editing or camera-play tied to what's happening, which to me gave it a very clinical feeling. Certainly not as funny as Funny Games. I would not previously have described my sense of humor as more interested in structure than content, but it seems fair.

Szamanka is actually the only Zulawski I've seen but I'd count it as a horror movie.

I agree but only because I'm curious how the thread would react to it. Movie has a couple real stand-out scenes, all of which become much less surprising in retrospect now that I know more about Zulawski's other work.

And I will happily accept wreaths and congratulations on my undefeated status, but I have to toss out the disclaimer that my record would look much worse if we had ended up running all the southeast Asian teams I...tried to nominate? Thought about nominating but was too lazy for? I don't even remember. I'm sorry you're not watching the entire Black Magic series right now, however I botched it all those months ago.

e: probably I looked at Meng-Hua Ho's IMDB page and gave up sorting through all the stuff I'll never be able to find that may or may not have been horror, then repeated the process with every other director I could think of in the region.

I have no idea how Scanners vs. Creature will play out - my first reaction is that it's a slam-dunk for Creature because lots of people love it and I think most people agree that Scanners kind of sucks. At the same time, Scanners sucks mostly by comparison to Cronenberg's other work and the one part of the movie everybody knows is still an incredible standout. I don't even know how I'd vote on this one, I haven't seen Creature since I was 12 and it didn't make much of an impression at the time.

Shocker is top tier Craven imo. There are plenty of true negative things you could say about it, but almost none of them matter at all because it's fun and it's willing to surprise you. You'd need a real masterpiece to have a lock on beating it, and I think NIMH is too far from horror's heart to pull it off.

On first viewing of the trilogy, Mr. Vengeance was by far my favorite. I don't know whether I'd still feel that way on a second pass and Nausicaa is pretty great, but the reflex is that this is a clear win for Park.
