Well, I see the pipelines now, they look a bit odd, I have to say, I guess their nature makes them a bit of a pain to model, and the bridges can have the same issue, spans that connect with a sharp if small angle.

And I agree that there's no way to get herringbone flats to look good without separating them even more than flat blocks along a road.

I think it’s possible to get a pipeline that doesn’t look bad, it just takes so much patience for something that’s minor and annoying to place. Where you see it near the highway roundabout is especially bad because when I placed it I had to carefully thread it through buildings which have since been deleted.

And yes, 100% agreed. I have somewhat ignored the micro districting approach, but I intend to use that more for a larger metro and even Kopalnia feels more like a town to me. The entire town is really just two “districts” wide if you consider a district as a walkable center with services. Kopalnia’s are oddly shaped because of the land, also, which has prevented me from pursuing a more standardized design.

Polnac (North) Kopalnia, mostly foliaged. I ended up clearing a few trees out of the park after this to open it up some.

Played with a weird apartment complex idea here, intending to save some room for parking in the center... Don't think it worked. Still needs trees and maybe a sports field or two.

Some new apartments in the foreground, and another attempt at angled flats along a road. I can never be happy with those, I should stop trying. They look forever weird to me.

The main roundabout and the park entrance behind it.

The park! Complete with townhall and clock tower, and a little greenhouse to the right.

Unfortunately, pollution is officially A Problem here. Hoping that moving some of the industries away from here will relieve at least some of this. But hey, you're living in a town that translates to 'Mine.' It's not exactly going to be a shining beacon.

It’s loving impossible to make curved bridges in any real sense. I don’t think you can even try to curve tunnels as far as I know.

If you really spent some time with terraforming and playing with it you could maybe do the curve on a slope and then just have a straight bit where it needs to be a bridge?

Traffic management is not really one of the game's primary concerns. There are no traffic lights either.

Anime Store Adventure

Yeah, honestly even using a traffic circle is sometimes a detriment. My highways really are, I’ll say 80% aesthetics/role play. Functionally they provide me some guidelines as to where I’m imagining major transit corridors so it’s easier to plan and also makes me very conscious of blocking them or building too close when I know that’s where I’ll route a lot of my infrastructure. And very infrequently they might help some faster vehicles pass.

For you, when I next need a 4 way interchange I’ll attempt a stack.

Quick one for y'all - Mayveena asked in the game thread if I was streaming this. Is there much interest in it? I figure there's few enough people between this thread and the games thread(s) I'd prefer to do it in a discord server - Discord streaming is pretty much live, and then y'all can yack at me while I'm doing stuff if you want. I don't have any twitch or other streaming things set up and I don't really want to. I don't think it would get too out of hand? Sort of related to this, I wouldn't ever promise to try and make it interesting- I should say, more interesting than it is now. I would narrate what I'm thinking a little more and of course chat with y'all, but I'm not going to put a ton of effort into making sure theres no dead air constantly, or facecam, or donations, or whatever else comes with streaming these days. I don't want to try to hype what is essentially a very slow buildy game like a twitch talking head.

I'm of the personal opinion that watching someone play a game like this at live speed can be notoriously boring - at least the way I play, with tons of fiddling and second guessing and pausing and that sort of thing. Personally I'm pretty indifferent to it - I think it could be a lot of fun with a little group, but its also a little intimidating to me to "host" and I don't want to go through anything extra if it's not grabbing to all y'all. So don't take the interest check as a sort of 'fishing for approval' as much as a true ask of, "Do you wanna watch?"

Lemme know. It would probably be evenings/late evenings EST - anywheres from 7pm to ... Rather late, depending on how sucked into the game I get. Days of the week would be totally random.

How much of watching someone trim a bonsai tree is rotating a building quietly saying, "gently caress." because it doesn't fit into building jenga?

If I find the right mood I might throw up an impromptu discord tomorrow and shout the link here and the game thread, just to see if anyone bites and how it kind of feels.

Paging Veloxyll and any other Train-whizzes:

This is a bug, right? That train is blocking itself. I know, because if I change the signalling at all around it, and only it, it will enter the depot. I can't see any way it should be reserving the section in purple from where it is now.
e: I'm going to try moving the signal back a little bit from the intersection, I suppose, and fix the chain/not chain. Some of those signals are either redundant or I changed their type to try and troubleshoot wtf was happening.

Alright I decided against Discord only because I didn't want anyone to have to take the time to join a server especially if you may not have the program - plus its a little bit more personal, and considering I am the type of person who likes to randomly creep, drop in/out without announcement, the whole bit, I got Twitch to work how I wanted pretty easily. (No wonder everyone does this now.) This way you can just click the link and drop in or whatever.

My streaming won't affect the LP in terms of updates - I kind of see the streaming as an aside and it might go away, just a test. Whatever, you don't care about that, come check it out: https://twitch.tv/animestoreadventure

The stream is up, but I'm taking a quick break so you'll see it frozen with weird Soviet electronic music for a bit if you click really soon after this post. Probably going to play a few hours, move some industries around, swear at trucks. I'm not going to talk to an empty room so if you're around say hello and I'll start blabbering on randomly about what I'm doing.

My stream was using the YouTube stream from the OP, the Sovietwave radio. It gets repetitive (it’s maybe only got about 6 hours of songs?) But it’s similar to the game soundtrack while having a little more meat to it so it’s not the same 6 tracks.

I realize now that woops that might not actually be kosher. I forgot all about music rights and streaming because I was so worried about getting it running.

It does appear to be blocking itself. It shouldnt be, cos there appears to be regular signals after the previous junction. So nothing else should be reserved. How very odd.

Before I went to bed I touched up a few things and sure enough, I saw this happen again. Double checked that it wasn't anything trying to leave that depot. Just a bug! I futzed with the signals and got rid of a bunch of chain signals and let the whole little section thats purple and orange be its own block. That area might become relatively high traffic, but I think it'll be fine. I think it could be mad about that weird triangle crossing where the depot entrance crosses the split tracks to the cargo station on the bottom left, but then again, this is the exact problem I had with that construction depot that crossed a road, if you remember, so I suspect its just a bug with that building's entrance somehow.

I watched part I of the stream but didn't make it back for part II. Good stuff, I appreciate the amount of advance planning and setup that needs to go into this game. As someone who gets bored of that very quickly and ends up plonking stuff down willy-nilly to feel like I'm making progress it re-iterates to me that I should put more effort in. I was planning for my next game to start as with agriculture as opposed to industry so the field setup was useful.

As an aside, I was on holiday in Ohrid, Macedonia a couple of years back. My wife and I took a day trip by coach to Tirana. The journey through the Albanian countryside took us through the mining areas (near Librazhd?) which looked mostly derelict. A real W&R vibe about that place. Maybe some Hoxha-ites will add bunkers as a mod.

EDIT : Tried to find a picture but instead got one of another Albanian mine. Alternatively, you could say that the new update on the Beta branch of W&R has some graphical improvements.

I tried, I really did. I may give it one more shot in a better spot, but I don't think given the requirements for space and (lack) of curves of things like bridges and tunnels and that the stack really makes a lot of sense.

This might be just me with my pedestrian focused and provincial sized games, but traffic has never really been a problem to the point that I would create a roundabout, let alone an interchange.

It is certainly disappointing that the game allows for such gorgeous road curves while disallowing curving bridges, but I suspect there's a technical limitation to how they've implemented some of these that they've painted themselves into a corner with

Part 11: We're Officially Out Of Gravel

Finally, we're getting to some actual visible progress in moving some of our industries to their permanent locations, which is good. That's a big part of getting a more reasonable logistics system using trains and depots instead of having nothing but distribution centers. In the end, we'll actually have more centers and probably the same number of trucks, roughly, but they'll be used for the last leg of the supply runs instead of having to scoot stuff around the map entirely on their own. This will save time and probably reduce our fuel needs significantly. (Trains are much more efficient.) Right now, everything is sort of tucked around Kopalnia and there's no real reason to try and truck it to a rail station, because there's no depots set up to receive goods. We've got some local cargo stations for our towns, but the consumer goods are basically central to all of the towns and the closest rail access to ship them around would be their destinations anyway. But now we're getting depots out there, and Miergeni is the first town we have that's really pretty out there, and Sejov is already on the edge of being unable to get adequate supply by truck in the winter.

Rail constructors pass, notably, without blocking each other! Nice!

Making sure all of our highways stay out of the way.

There's been a lot of road work and we've now laid out the new cement, prefab, and brick factories near Sejov and have started work on a new settlement that will replace Brelov - aptly named Nowy Brelov. We'll also use this new area near Sejov for heating coal - this will likely be something that'll continue to be hauled by truck. Considering the amount that a plant uses in a year and some extra downtime in the summer, it seems a bit over complicated to make all the infrastructure to stock these heating plants by rail.

Vaguely similar to the old save!

Nowy Brelov's groundworks.

We also got rid of that foolish roundabout near Gliwilystok's depot and replaced with a new interchange!

It's... Kind of better. This spot really sucks for a highway interchange because of elevation changes.

And we're also working on moving our fields and crop-based industries over near Miergeni. We'll have a lot more room for crops and expanded storage for them, as we're near our maximum storage for crops but also using almost more than we produce in a year with the current industries.

An expanded grain silo complex.

Fields as far as the eye (or.. LOD) can see!

So lots of good progress... And none too soon. In fact, we've finally broken the truck-based supply lines and the initial industries we've laid down. Our concrete plants have been running out of cement for significant periods of time - waiting on trucks to show up and bring more. This even led to shortages of prefabs, which meant our rail construction halted for some time. Bricks ran out at one depot for a while. And most surprising: We've actually run out of gravel. I've outpaced a single gravel processing facility for long enough that I've run it fully dry and many depots are chewing through whatever deliveries they can get their hands on.

Things got dire.

I have been insistent that you hardly need to worry about the little productivity gap of truck-switching at gravel factories, and further, with a buffer that you'd ever need more than one facility. Now as I look at my gravel-starved republic, I'm ready to eat my words. It took several massive construction depots working constantly, but I've finally outpaced my ability to produce gravel. I'm glad to be expanding.

Other highlights include replacing significant portions of our truck fleet with new, Romanian trucks. They seem like they may be better or comparable to the Kamaz trucks, though they are quite expensive. Still, they're fast and haul a lot. (Also a likely reason we've started to drain sources of supplies - the delivery frequency is up 30% per truck.)

It's Jan 1 1975 - so we'll have to confront our five year plan goals soon and things always seem to move more slowly than I estimate when the goals are laid out. This 5 year period has been different, surely. A lot happened, but it doesn't feel like a lot of 'new' progress - other than the refinery, we didn't add any new major industries and much of the work was, I'll call it, 'supportive of future development.' Necessary, but sometimes a struggle to become excited about. Our depots are all busy right now, but soon we'll start working on new industries to finish resource independence and then start thinking about building our own cars, trains, boats, and planes.
