I learned to drive on rural Wisconsin dirt roads in godawful weather. You get pretty good at judging traction, stopping distances, and visual conditions in a Wisconsin winter.

It doesn't matter, you could be the greatest driver in the world but it's still an anecdote. Statistics on deaths in traffic says US has 12.9 deaths per 100k (2021), Finland had 3.8 in 2019, Sweden 2.2, Germany 3.7. So you can see there's a difference.

And those are deaths so more severe accidents, just minor accidents, the risk of your car getting done in by some rando. Just driving on the street knowing how little training there is required to drive would make me very paranoid....

I don't think you're going to find much argument that the US (and Canada for that matter) don't exactly have a high bar for licensing requirements, but when you're looking at death stats like that you have to also keep in mind other contributing factors and depending on the source they may or may not be corrected.

Things like age of vehicles in general, seat belt compliance, helmet compliance (for motorcycles), etc. Even the general health of the population come into play.

It has a youtube channel so it's like the 11'8" bridge one but for drivers who get confused about what corners are and what they should do when coming up against one:

This one's off camber, so drivers carry too much speed into it and understeer directly into the ditch.

This one is actually on the way to my doctor's office. It's a highway exit from a tunnel that's super narrow and spits you out into an immediate merge and a traffic light.

Like a pig in a chute.
Reminds me of driving through central Pennsylvania. There are these twisting 2 lane roads with corn so high you can't see oncoming traffic and a speed limit of 50. I don't go near that when it gets hilly and people always blast past me.

I used to work in an office that was right next to a highway off-ramp that was really treacherous and there were some impressive rollovers. They rejigged it a while back but you can see the old route on google maps: (highlighted the old path across the grass)

In wet, dry, snow, didn’t matter, people were rolling off it about once a week or more. And then the people that made it would go shooting across 3 lanes of traffic on a major road to get to the left turn signal causing a ton of fender benders and constant honking. You almost developed ptsd listening to constant accidents/near accidents in that loving office.

A previous favorite crash prone area camera is https://www.youtube.com/@MilwaukeeRoundabout. There is a wide bridge/viaduct where people speed and it dumps those driving south right into a large roundabout. Too bad there hasn't been a new video in forever.

Fortunately, "just" a broken leg.

In searching for the news story, I found that this is common enough that one of local TV stations has a "Child hit by car" tag: https://abc13.com/tag/children-hit-by-car/

The vast, vast majority of the replies are some variation of "you're the reason why those yellow poles exist" a lot of "you heard a crunch and kept going?!" and scarily a too few many people saying she's right and they've hit stationary objects too because they couldn't see them.

I think they usually have deployable safety bars, and it’s probably a big reason why there aren’t many of them around anymore, at least not new models.

I remember the Volvo C70 way back when having quite the system to protect passengers in case of rollovers, big bars that come out due to the centrifugal force of a roll and lock into place etc.
