Yeah, I didn't do driver's ed, but somehow I've managed not to get in any accidents over the last 50 years.

Things are never predestined to happen because of something you do or don't do. I'd still rather have everyone around me have a robust education in operating machinery that can kill me in a literal instant.

You get pretty good at judging traction, stopping distances, and visual conditions in a Wisconsin winter.

It doesn't matter, you could be the greatest driver in the world but it's still an anecdote. Statistics on deaths in traffic says US has 12.9 deaths per 100k (2021), Finland had 3.8 in 2019, Sweden 2.2, Germany 3.7. So you can see there's a difference. And those are deaths so more severe accidents, just minor accidents, the risk of your car getting done in by some rando. Just driving on the street knowing how little training there is required to drive would make me very paranoid....

Found this incredible corner that for some reason keeps catching drivers out (do these people not have eyes?!) https://x.com/conzmoleman/status/1770370903655731653 It has a youtube channel so it's like the 11'8" bridge one but for drivers who get confused about what corners are and what they should do when coming up against one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9G-D2VkZhE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-SZQXNkDmI In the comments this classic corner as well which iirc is well signposted but people still go steaming round it at high speed and wreck for our entertainment: https://x.com/chvrlie_js/status/1770516073856835964 Olympic Mathlete fucked around with this message at 15:09 on Apr 15, 2024 |

Reminds me of driving through central Pennsylvania. There are these twisting 2 lane roads with corn so high you can't see oncoming traffic and a speed limit of 50. I don't go near that when it gets hilly and people always blast past me.

I used to work in an office that was right next to a highway off-ramp that was really treacherous and there were some impressive rollovers. They rejigged it a while back but you can see the old route on google maps: (highlighted the old path across the grass) In wet, dry, snow, didn’t matter, people were rolling off it about once a week or more. And then the people that made it would go shooting across 3 lanes of traffic on a major road to get to the left turn signal causing a ton of fender benders and constant honking. You almost developed ptsd listening to constant accidents/near accidents in that loving office.

A previous favorite crash prone area camera is https://www.youtube.com/@MilwaukeeRoundabout. There is a wide bridge/viaduct where people speed and it dumps those driving south right into a large roundabout. Too bad there hasn't been a new video in forever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00FH-OFFinA&t=11s waffle iron fucked around with this message at 19:18 on Apr 15, 2024 |

My Daughter's classmate got run over in a hit and run last weekend: https://www.khou.com/article/news/local/harris-county/west-houston-hit-and-run-crash-girl-injured/285-45b8ef38-b1fe-4274-b040-bbc378060adb Fortunately, "just" a broken leg. In searching for the news story, I found that this is common enough that one of local TV stations has a "Child hit by car" tag: https://abc13.com/tag/children-hit-by-car/ Jesus Christ.

I remember the Volvo C70 way back when having quite the system to protect passengers in case of rollovers, big bars that come out due to the centrifugal force of a roll and lock into place etc.
