looks like we got an actually significant patch, the most important part of which is going to be the effective addition of Ground Zero as a "real" map (though the spring season looks nice)

quote:

Started the first iteration of the seasons system:
*The season change implies a change in the visual part of the locations, ambient sound, and weather effects;
*Early spring will be available in this update;
*Other seasons corresponding to the calendar seasons will be added in future updates.

Added the BTR-82A to Woods, traveling between different stop points:
*Scav Bunker; Sunken Village; Old Sawmill; Sawmill; USEC Checkpoint; Emercom Base; Junction
*Added a detailed suspension system to the BTR for more realistic rough terrain movement;
*Opened the gates at the Northern and Southern UN Roadblock exits to allow the BTR to drive outside the location. These exits are under sniper fire beyond the gates.

[b]Updated the matching system for Ground Zero:[b]
The system divides players into beginners (up to level 20 inclusive) and experienced players (level 21 and above), matchmaking for these groups will be separate:
*Ground Zero will be available to all players without level restrictions;
*For experienced players, there will be a modified version of Ground Zero with:
*Increased difficulty of Scavs;
*Chance to find rare loot;
*Possibility of an Airdrop plane appearing, as well as the option to call in an Airdrop with a red flare;
*Possibility of Scav Boss Kollontay appearing;
*If there is at least one player in the group with a level higher than 20, all players will receive a warning for selecting Ground Zero for experienced players;
*When playing as a Scav, the matching is independent of the player's level;
*In co-op practice mode, access to Ground Zero is also independent of the player's level;
*Quests "First in Line", "Shooting Cans", "Luxurious Life", "Burning Rubber" and "Saving the Mole" will no longer fail after the player reaches level 20;
*Added Ground Zero objectives for the following quests: "A Shooter Born in Heaven", "The Guide", "Peacekeeping Mission", "The Survivalist Path - Eagle-Owl", "Escort", "Slaughterhouse" and "Information Source";
*Added daily and weekly tasks for Ground Zero.

then a bunch of more minor changes, the most important of which is probably the addition of damage and penetration stats to the ammo inspector screen + "When hovering over the penetration sat, you can see the penetration chance against certain armor classes"

They just applied a tech update. Prhaps to address the matching aborted issues folks have been having?

Gingy and Bearki found if they didn't enter their hideout it wouldn't cause the matching aborted issue, though someone from BSG DM'd Gingy to say that's not what was causing it for everyone, it might solve it for some folks.

I'm stuck on creating loot pools on my scav so I dunno if it has gotten any better.

Big Boy Ground Zero has gotten better loot than the kiddie pool, so it might be a good place for GPUs now. I got one on a scav run. There are a lot of PCs on the map and since it's quite small, it's quick to get out.

Scav runs seem to randomly place you in the beginner map or the 21+ version, so you can't always count on being in the one with the good loot.

I'm having some issues with Skier's task "Chemical - part 1" where you have to track down the Deputy Chief's hideout on Customs.

My task completion looks like this

I'm pretty sure I've never actually handed over the item even though it shows it. I've been to the train cart and I can't find the item, so maybe it doesn't spawn. I've also bought the Room 220 key off the fleamarket and been to room 220.

Nothing seems to progress the task.

Am I missing something or is it bugged?

The "items that can help with the investigation" is the 220 key, so either you handed it in or the game is making GBS threads itself somehow. So far I've never had the folder not spawn, but with Tarkov you just never know. It's a bit tricky to find now that it can spawn in a couple of different locations in the train car.

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't. Some of the hideout items are Labs only and I think they've kept it that way.

My guess is that what can spawn now on Ground Zero is the same as can spawn on other 'normal' maps. On the low-level Ground Zero, it's my impression that the loot is nerfed, compared to other maps, and there are items that can't drop there. For instance GPUs.

I searched the train cart again and found the item. Turned it in and completed the task.

I think it's a little confusing that it marks "Hand over the items" as done when it's not done. But I guess the game is still in beta test :)

More knowledgeable folks can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think they do free weekends.

There's a 20% off sale going on right now, and you can always upgrade later if you want the "bad with money edition" everyone calls it in here, though EoD is gone Nikita said during an interview with Pestily that there's an upgrade coming soon that's better than EoD.

Edit: Sale is over as of about 20min ago. RIP.

not really - they gave out 7 day free trial codes some years ago, but it's not something you could count or plan on happening again anytime soon

it does go on sale periodically - it's actually 20% off right now, and usually has a discount around Russian holidays (the next one will almost certainly be for victory day on May 9th)

usual advice would be to get standard edition at a discount to see if you like it - it's still basically a full price game at $30-40, but that has come with years of active support/development (and their recent updates have been substantial/meaningful), and then upgrade if you like the game enough for it to be worth it

All balls.
Note that if you like it and want to upgrade, Pestily did an interview with Nikita who said there will be a new edition that will be better than the Edge of Darkness edition you can't buy anymore.

I'd probably base a buying decision off of how good you are at fps games. If you're genuinely in a fairly high percentile of like fps fundamentals it's a great game that will keep you entertained at least long enough to get your money's worth before you start to see the flaws with the game. if you're someone who doesn't have a lot of fps experience idk you're probably just going to get poo poo on a bunch and either have to rat super hard or have no fun.

tarkov is pretty much an entirely different game depending on how well you can handle the base challenges of the game

LGD
Sep 25, 2004

ehhh, I'd say it sort of depends how you mean that

FPS fundamentals obviously help immensely and I wouldn't recommend Tarkov to someone who wasn't a FPS afficionado with a minimum level of general proficiency (because lol why would you do that to yourself?), but game knowledge is a huge part of success in Tarkov, and that's sort of eliding both the extent to which extremely solid FPS fundamentals will 100% not stop you from getting repeatedly shithoused during your first wipe while you figure out how stuff fits together, and the extent to which game knowledge can compensate for weaker mechanical skills/old man reflexes in ways that don't translate to most other FPS titles (and/or also the extent to which different skills and playstyles are rewarded)

they absolutely transfer, i had a sr in the 70s my first wipe. imo getting kills and being comfortable pushing is where you really need the map knowledge. tbh just understanding positioning at all, using defilade and pre-paining is enough to get most people into a decent survival rate. you also need just enough mechanical ability to not struggle killing scavs.... which all comes back to basically just fps fundamentals

the big saving grace for anyone on the fence about trying tarkov is that there's no matchmaking so the average pmc skill level will be pretty low, though the game does ultimately self-select for people good enough that they're consistently having fun.

if the game shitstomps you too hard you can also play the single player mod which people seem to enjoy. imo you lose a lot of what makes the game so compelling and dynamic without having player controlled characters running around, but idk I'd much prefer that people who find the game too hard play that instead of downloading cheats or w/e. tarkov is a very cool game conceptually, even with its flaws, but it's definitely tuned around the expectation that you've got, like, at least a thousand hours of semi-recent fps muscle memory to fall back on

also in current tarkov scavving is the universal basic income and even a single middling scav run will currently fund a meta kit or several good budget kits. budget kits in general are in a very good spot right now, too

I bought the game 3-4 months ago and I don't think free weekends would have helped me. If anything, it'd probably have turned me off the game.

Tarkov is a game where map knowledge plays a really big part. If you don't know the maps and are playing against people that do, you'll have a hard time. There's no map or minimap to help you, so you have to learn the maps yourself and that takes some time.

I've been having Tarkov on my radar for some years. I played COD DMZ and loved it. When COD MW3 came out and they stopped supporting DMZ, I bought Tarkov.

It's been a steep learning curve for me, but I absolutely love the game. I can still feel discouraged when I get domed for the 5th time in a row by someone I didn't see, but when you do it to someone else, it just feels so good. And those raids where you get shot up and make it to extract before bleeding out feel epic.

It's a fantastic game and if you think it's for you, I 100% recommend it. My only regret is that I didn't buy it earlier.

Totally same here. I suck big rear end at the game, but I’m having so much fun with it, even doing exclusively solo runs so far.

It just scratches an itch I’ve had for years and spent probably hundreds trying to scratch when I should have just ponied up and bought this game.

Arrath

It's a great time to hop into the game too since the recoil doesn't suck rear end for maybe the first time ever?

LGD
Sep 25, 2004

yeah the recoil/armor changes and some of the related tweaks (like the way a bunch of optics got unfucked) definitely make things significantly more approachable - guns mostly just work without extensive modding (or needing to know which ones don't), you don't need to learn how to handle the old wildly counterintuitive recoil system, you can work with or around garbage or middling ammo to actually get kills, etc.

Pretty unlikely because SPT allowing multiplayer would be the tipping point where it's now in competition with the parent game and likely to push Battlestate into getting the project shut down.

Figured, there’s just always rumblings every now and then of it potentially happening via 3rd party tools. I thought maybe BSG’s addition of an official faux-coop mode meant modders might have jerryrigged something in the time since I stopped playing
