And somebody called John Bishop is gonna be the new companion, I have no idea who that is but looking him up he's a footballer/comedian?

Wait, that John Bishop, it can't be can it? Seriously?

I mean, I (and a lot of other people, I imagine) had that kind of reaction when I heard about Bradley Walsh being cast, and he was great.

Walsh already proven his acting chops elsewhere though, so I was never concerned about him being on the show (and it turned out he was the least of the show's problems under Chibnall).

This just smacks of stunt casting.

Yeah. There were some good bits, but that episode was all over the drat place.

The wrote a heartfelt farewell scene for two companions, but forgot to write any decent lead in to it through the episode.

Those companions have psychic paper to allow them to investigate places where there may be dangerous aliens! But no specialist equipment or knowledge which would give them any advantage over those aliens, they are definitely going to die.

The pacing was sloooooow FASTFASTFAST sloooooooow, which... Yeah.

Apparently the DALEK could clone himself over the internet, and also kill contractors and turn them into nutrient over the internet too.

The Doctor killed a Tardis which doesnt feel right at all.

The doctor moped in prison about the bullshit revelations at the end of last series for years? Decades? I mean, I'm annoyed at them too, they are some bullshit, but that doesnt seem like something the doctor would do.

It was nice to see Jack though, he's good in Who, it almost makes me forget how much I hated all of torchwood. (Yes, all of it, dont @ me).

I have to go now. My planet needs me.
Ryan always seemed like a...kinda there character, like they didn't give the actor enough to do. Same with Yaz. Graham was the strongest out of the three, but it was Bradley Walsh playing himself.

Even though the timeless child thing was dumb, its nice to see the show embracing the continuity and weirdness of Doctor Who more, because Whittaker's first season kinda held the franchise at arm's length. John Barrowman just fitted in smoothly as Jack again, and was a lot of fun. I like Chris Noth, but his character felt a little cartoony. The Doctor killing a TARDIS was a bit weird in hindsight, because she knows that they're living beings with will, especially after she apologies to the one she abandoned last season.

The Daleks have had a pretty good time recently with Time Lord Victorious, and while it wasn't as good as that, it was a very solid Dalek story.

I was hoping from the promos that the prison break was going to be a bigger part of the episode. I have a soft spot for prison break stories, and there's a lot of things that could have been done with 13 in a prison setting aside.

You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.
When all is said and done, at least one person enjoyed the episode.

And that would be Priti Patel, who probably soaked herself at the scene where the Daleks were killing people at the border.

It feels like stunt casting for 2015.

And in the end Ryan still fell off his bike because the writers, absent a clue on what to do with ether him or Graham, couldn’t even give him that one.

And if that doesn’t sum up Chibnal’s Doctor Who then I dunno what does :sigh:

To the wilderness we go, gentlemen, we may be there for some time.

As a singer yes, but she wasnt known as an actress yet either.

Edit to add: Its entirely possible that John Bishop will suck, but after thinking that about Piper, Lucas, Tate and Walsh and being wrong each time, I'm willing to give him a chance.

I mean the actors can be great all they want, see Walsh, but if they have nout to hang their abilities on writing wise then its all a bit moot.

That was enjoyable enough in the moment, nothing outrageously terrible, but yeah the plot was a total mess, and American business man is not an interesting enough character to justify bringing him back.

Was fun to see Jack again though, and the Prime Minister getting exterminated by Daleks in front of 10 Downing Street was cool and good.

Agreed that the Doctor killing a TARDIS felt wrong.

wasn't very good, though the daleks streaming into the TARDIS was funny and clever. so was the locked up angel at the start.

i didn't like the american (and he absolutely should have died, but hes going to loving come back isnt he), but the best part of the episode was harriet walter (the PM). absolutely killed it. whoever wrote the speech before the dalek reveal in front of no 10 really got it. apart from the last line.

also lol at the 5 minute scene in the middle with ryan/doctor, awful. then the bike thing at the end, its just condescending at this point. remember dyspraxia, lads? cmon my son

i guess i was too caught up in the moment of having new Doctor Who to watch and Captain Jack being back properly and everything to really think anything other than "yeah, i thought it was alright "

i did appreciate having some companions just choosing to stop travelling with the Doctor for a change instead of being trapped in an alternate universe or having their memories wiped or married off to Mickey. they definitely should have had Ryan succeeding in riding the bike at the end if they were going to call back to that whole thing, though

also, yeah, terrible time to be having the Doctor recite Harry Potter to herself

e: also, dunno about the guy they've announced for the new companion one way or the other, but i was kinda hoping they'd spend some time with the Doctor and Yaz so she could have actually developed a character now that there's fewer people aboard

I gotta say, Yaz desperately trying to be Doctor Lite was one of the more enjoyable aspects of the episode. She's the one that would get handed psychic paper and left to defend Earth more than Ryan and Graham.

The Doc talks about it for a little bit, how she's confused and angered by not knowing what of her past is real, how much exists that she can't remember, etc. but it's not addressed as a "here are more answers" thing

That sure was another episode of Chibnall Who I just watched, not bad, not good either, absolutely thoroughly mediocre. I did enjoy the idea of Dalek vs Dalek, but oops that's done in 5 minutes. Also it sounded like the companions would've been on their own for a bit longer until the Doctor came back to help them out, but they hadn't even really gotten out the door before she came back to solve everything. Also compared to previous gaps, is 10 months really that big a deal? They acted like she purposefully abandoned them for like 15 years or something, I guess it hits harder for Ryan, but ease up lad.

Also it says something when Ryan was listing all the monsters they'd faced and I didn't recognise most of the names. Chibnall needs to work on some more memorable monsters.

I forget the exactly specifics but it was one of those things that got wiped from the collective memory of humankind, which makes the fact the show did a public alien invasion and mass death thing including killing the Prime Minister (again!) and then just promptly moved on so weird. Chibnall is really not at his best when he's trying to emulate RTD's big, mad, glorious exercises in excess.

If she wasn't just escaping immediately, I was really hoping she was going to be a thorn in the administration's side, constantly getting out of her cell and investigating things, helping out other prisoners, playing cards with some of the guards etc. Kind of a less smug, happier version of River Song, only staying in prison so she can work out some stuff before just escaping whenever she felt like.

I mean hell, look at Missy when she was 12's "prisoner". It was the most advanced and supremely inescapable cage they could make, and both of them agreed that if Missy had wanted to she could have escaped at any time. The Doctor seemingly being legitimately trapped inside felt so off.
