At the very least Romero seems to be the reason that DooM and Wolf3d still hold up today. He unironically took edgelording to new levels of artistry and the result is some pretty sick skulls that can fly and bad guys that explode in the most satisfying way 30 years later. I dunno if Carmack was the technical brains that made FPS games possible but he was definitely not the one who made them fun

on the other hand, having someone who cares only for the austere purity of their engine and sets hard restrictions on what you should even think about making it do is valuable for the creative process. one big problem (of many) with daikatana was when romero saw colored lighting in quake 2 and had to waste a year and half rebuilding the game on a new engine. there's a part in masters of doom where romero and tom hall are begging carmack to add secret walls and he won't because he thinks it's an ugly hack, so to convince him they promise they'll use them absolutely everywhere through the whole game. those secrets are big part of the identity of wolf 3d and you have to wonder if they still would have been without the pushback Lime fucked around with this message at 22:15 on Apr 18, 2024 |
