https://news.sky.com/story/mugabe-fall-even-jesus-would-have-tripped-10372605

quote:

Zimbabwean state media and spin doctors have rushed to defend President Robert Mugabe after he fell from a staircase, saying "even Jesus" would have tripped under the circumstances.

The 90-year-old missed a step as he walked off a podium at Harare International Airport where he was addressing supporters after returning from Ethiopia.

His aides quickly helped him up and escorted him to his limousine.

According to The Herald newspaper, Mr Mugabe "tripped over a poorly laid-out carpet... but remarkably managed to break the fall before walking to his car, evidently unscathed".

Information minister Jonathan Moyo told the paper his boss's accident was not news as anyone could have tripped in that situation.

"The misrepresentations and morbid celebrations of the incident by malcontents is the real news here and not the alleged fall as there was none," he was quoted as saying.

Bournemouth/Poole/Christchuch got moved into tier 4 a few days back, but not Dorset county council. Sounds simple, but in practice due to the way the new council lines were drawn up after the mergers we now have a situation in Hamworthy thats utterly absurd. All the shops are on one side of the main road which falls under BCP council. But over the road is the majority of the housing in Hamworthy, which falls under Dorset council. Now they cant go to the shop 100 yards away to buy food as this is entering a tier 4 area and you're not allowed to do that according to our MP. This means they now need to go nearly 10 miles to the next nearest supermarket in the Dorset council area, yet all their kids can mingle in the school thats in tier 4 and they can all go to work in Tier 4's Sunseeker yard down the road.

Someone please tell me this is not right?

Yeah it was poo poo. Thankfully we managed to find a beach that seemingly none of the tourists knew about, probably because it's tiny, so we managed to avoid all that. Still was crazy when they started closing down roads and all that

Also I agree with the sentiment of this:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jan/02/follow-covid-restrictions-break-rules-compliance

quote:

It was only as lockdown was eased that compliance began to decrease. Partly, people felt the situation was safer. But other factors contributed too. For many, the new rules were simply too complex to understand. While during lockdown 90% of adults in the UK reported feeling they understood the rules, by August this figure was just 45% in England. Conflicting rules across UK nations, frequent changes to rules, and confusion about dates of announcement (as opposed to dates of implementation) exacerbated the situation.

But the message from the government about adherence also changed after the revelations about the actions of Dominic Cummings, which were followed by a decrease in compliance. Returning to a single event might seem like bearing a grudge, but it was pivotal for many reasons. During lockdown the message on compliance was clear: social restrictions were vital to stop the spread of the virus, so everyone had to play their part; no excuses, no exemptions. But Cummings changed the tone: if you could find a loophole in the rules, it somehow became acceptable (and defensible) to break them. The enemy changed from being the virus itself to being the measures designed to curb the virus.

This shift in tone did not go unnoticed, as our research at UCL showed. The same sacrifices people had willingly made in the spring as part of a collective social responsibility suddenly seemed less necessary. Goodwill turned to anger and upset, largely targeted towards the government that defended Cummings’ actions. Trust in the government to handle the pandemic took a sharp downward turn in England, from which it has not recovered since. Trust is crucial, as research has shown that it is one of the largest behavioural predictors of compliance during this pandemic: larger than mental health, belief in the health service or numerous other factors. As humans, we need to trust our authorities if we are to follow what they tell us to do.

In other made-up, looney left project fear news

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/jan/05/mother-fears-son-could-die-as-brexit-stops-medical-cannabis-medicine-supply

quote:

The mother of a nine-year-old boy with a rare and severe form of epilepsy has told how she fears her son could die after the government announced his supply of a life-changing cannabis medicine from the Netherlands would stop because of Brexit.

Hannah Deacon was given just two weeks notice by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) that due to the end of the transition period “prescriptions issued in the UK can no longer be lawfully dispensed in an EU member state”.

Her campaign to save her son Alfie Dingley’s life in 2017 led to a change in the law enabling the medicine which has seen him seizure free after years of 150 seizures a week, to be prescribed in the UK.

Deacon told the Guardian she is in despair about her child’s future if he cannot get the Bedrolite oil he now takes three times a day.

“They [the DHSC] said they understand our concern but they can’t do anything. Well let me tell them, it is not concerning, it is terrifying.”

She says she wasn’t even told directly by the DHSC that she would no longer get the drug, something she describes as “galling”.

Instead the letter went to pharmacy suppliers around the country who were told to advise on “alternative” prescriptions which would be “clinically appropriate to switch patients on to”.

“I am facing the fact that my son might go into refractory epileptic seizures again which can kill people. That’s how dangerous this is. So to say ‘oh you can swap it for another product, sorry we can’t help’ it is grossly unacceptable. It’s very very dangerous and I’m really frightened about what is going to happen,” she said.

“The letter was sent on the 17 December, so we had no time. We’re very lucky that we were able to secure a couple of months worth of medicine. But that is not long. What makes me really angry is the lack of time we have, the lack of empathy, of care. My son is on a medicine that works for him, why would they take that away?,” she said.

also

quote:

In desperation Deacon wrote to Boris Johnson begging him to intervene on 29 December.

“I just got an automatic response to say that he doesn’t reply to people that aren’t his constituents, which I find shocking because he is the prime minister,” said Deacon.

Fucks sake. In all honesty I stopped over a decade ago but it was the only thing that actually helped with my anxiety and having moved all over the country it's just not an option any more, particularly with it being illegal obviously.

So many mental and physical health issues that could be helped, let alone cutting costs to policing and the massive boost to government revenue :argh:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/jan/05/bbc-educational-cbbc-uk-covid-lockdown-curriculum

quote:

A significant expansion of BBC educational programming for children is to be launched in response to the latest UK lockdowns and school closures that are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

Amid concerns that large numbers of children without access to remote learning are losing out, the BBC said that the biggest education offer in its history was designed to ensure that all children can access curriculum-based learning without the internet.

Broadcasting from Monday each weekday on CBBC – which is aimed at children aged between 7 and 16 – it will include a three-hour block of primary school programming from 9am.

Programming will include BBC Live Lessons and BBC Bitesize Daily, as well as Our School and Celebrity Supply Teacher and older programming such as Horrible Histories, Art Ninja and Operation Ouch.

The broadcaster said BBC Two would cater for secondary school students with programming to support the GCSE curriculum, with a least two hours of content each weekday.

Content will be built around secondary school shows produced for Bitesize Daily, the BBC’s summer term service, it added, and will be complemented by Shakespeare, classic drama adaptations as well as science, history and other items.

This seems like a decent idea tbh
