I dunno man. I have yet to see a decent carrot on a stick to retain anyone. They started doing bonuses for department heads on cutters and even investigation officers for prevention, but those jobs are miserable.

It’s probably the same as it always has been to some degree. Our top people are leaving in favor of better prospects outside the coast guard where they don’t have to move all the time or be treated like a kid. Zukufnt (sp?) promised more geostability but the only thing I saw out of that was MST’s getting 5 year tours at feeder ports, and that’s not enough to make a splash.

So when the top people leave, we’re left with a few who want to be in the coast guard, another handful whom are stuck (hi, I have 17 years in and I’m riding this out until 20 for the pension), and some others that don’t have other options.

That’s definitely a pessimistic take on it and I’m generalizing, but I’m curious how this place will look in 5-10 years if we continue to be unable to
Hit our numbers. They started throwing more 3rd class cadets to cutters during the summer so at least the cutters have some grunts around to do some deck work due to lack of non rates. What’s next? Throw some more to the sector to mow lawns?

Future is bleak. I’m curious what Fagan says at the state of the coast guard and how much of it is attainable. I think we definitely need more money at least towards junior enlisted. The fact that people are relying on food banks to make ends meet is not ok.

The 9/11 crew is about to bounce en mass with the exception of idiots like me who enjoy their job. I love teaching my guys. Shits going to be hosed.

I'm at 20 and ready to bounce but am just hosed up enough to need a new career but not physically crippled enough to be actually hosed up....or it's Stockholm syndrome who knows.

Edit: jokes on me I have an aneurysm from slipping on the ice.

https://www.mycg.uscg.mil/News/Article/3272308/coast-guard-announces-advance-to-position-a2p-beta-test/

quote:

Under current policy, when the number of enlisted members available for advancement is insufficient to fill vacancies, the number of members eligible for advancement (above the advancement cutline) is adjusted accordingly. However, this arrangement has limited members’ ability to manage their professional development. The beta test will allow assignment officers (AOs) to offer advancements to members below the advancement cutline, and in some case, to members who wouldn’t otherwise be eligible, in return for accepting an assignment to vacant positions late in the assignment year or to offseason critical fill positions.

The A2P Beta Test will be limited to the boatswain’s mate (BM) and electronics technician (ET) ratings and will only apply to paygrades E-6 to E-9. However, the pool may expand to include E-9 assignments for all ratings to remain compliant with statutory control grade caps based on service needs.

For the most part yes. From what I understand they are going to go by order of your service wide ranking for the pool of applicants and if no one who took the service wide applies....marks I guess. From what I understand it's going live with all rates.

I mean, the advancement and promotion process sucks anyways, so what’s the loss/gain here?

Plenty of lovely test takers that make great leaders. Plenty of great test takers who make poo poo leaders.

The one SWE I took before OCS was all about buoys and ground tackle for me to make bm1…and I did lovely on it since my experience weighed on station experience instead of black hulls. I think I turned out ok regardless of the test score.

Honestly I think this is just them coming up with a way to fill traditionally hard to fill billets like AK. Which is a plus for me cause that's generally where I want to go.

To a degree, but with where I sit now things have gotten far worse in a completely different service with much more money and [somehow] even more feckless leadership.

Can’t imagine being active duty these days.

Grass is greener as a civilian, but only just. I liked being underway and moving every few years, it was the “being treated like a kid” part that won’t get fixed.

I mean, it’s much more money, but it also scales right? You guys need a ton of money for all your air/sea units compared to the coast guard/DHS. The thing that isn’t changing is your e4 gets paid the same as ours, bonuses notwithstanding.

I’m so removed from the fleet in my current job that I can’t comment on being treated like a kid. I’d like to say people are treated a little better, but that’s probably a bit jaded and ill-informed from officer/desk life compared to how I remember things as a non rate 17 years ago. At least some of the chiefs I’ve seen as an officer have appeared to be better in that regard, but they’re likely not talking to me the way the talk to their subordinates in every case.

Yeah, honestly our recruiters suck, Hooker has been dealing with them and all communication is one way. I grew up in a household with two Airforce recruiters, the CG should sell itself to prior service guys but they get ignored. The Buffalo office could probably meet its goal by sitting in the Ft. Drum PX food court after a winter pt morning with a sign that says same pay and benefits without PT and have a line out the door. Don't get me wrong the CG has its own bullshit but it pales compared to the other services.

I don't want to sound all "back in my coast guard" but I had a moment the other day. I serve on a regional SAR team and we had a suicidal person likely jumped off a bridge. The area we were searching is too shallow for any CG units but it might have been a couple tide cycles and it runs out into a large harbor. So I call the sector and I am not even asking for a boat launch at this point because I know manning is rough, but I'm asking for assistance with maybe some calculations based on the tides and currents, some stats so i can map out shoreline searches, etc. Something. Even something as simple as "hey IF a boat is underway already, can they come do a look see? hey if anyone calls in a floating body with this description can you, you know, let us know?"

The answer was "No" on everything. They said they didn't have the manning for it. Look I get not being able to launch a boat on what is 99% a recovery at this point, where we already have FD and other boats on scene. I get not blasting a helo off to fly around in the snow squalls. But, you're telling me you don't have the manning to look at some tides and currents with an expert eye? I'm 10+ years out of date on this stuff and don't have any of the tools they do.

I guess it's really gotten this bad.

Maybe soon enough!

The fact that we are having recruiting and retention problems and one idea to create a rating specific for recruiters-one where admin personnel are likely to flock towards since it means so sea duty, etc, just seems like a bad move.

Do any of the branches have a recruiter rating?

Another crazy thing I heard is they are willing to promote officers temporarily to take an open undesirable job. For example, an O4 can become an O5 for 3 years if they decide to go to a job in Houma.

This is getting crazier and crazier by the day.

Ratings are like MOS’s and Navy Rates, right?

Well USAF has AFSC’s (Air Force Specialty Code) and does have an AFSC for recruiter. You can go from E-5 to E-9 as a recruiter but it’s damned rare, most recruiters burn out and go back to their primary AFSC.

I never touched recruiting, and in hindsight I’m glad for that.

My dad did that. He went all the way up after going recruiter to get closer to mom's home when her dad caught cancer. He hated most of his coworkers as trying to get them to go sling the good jobs to underprivileged kids in the hood made them uncomfortable.
