i think the big thing working against monster now that i think about it is that it’s over 70 episodes long and isn’t a shonen battle anime where you can get hooked just catching ten minutes or whatever at 4 am, and it doesn’t have satoshi kon’s aesthetic (it’s totally worth watching if you haven’t; the pacing tends to drag for the first ten episodes but it’s really good i swear)

Eventually he finds a bullshit way that he can use the "heal" spell to do literally anything and he rewinds time several years to start over and enact a gruesome revenge fantasy against everyone who wronged him. Episode 1 was just sort of bad but episode 2 has a lot of rapes, a scene of him breaking all of the princess's fingers one by one, making her beg him to stick his dick in her instead of a red-hot poker, and ends with him erasing her memory and convincing her that she's actually his devoted servant before they set off together to track down the other people he's after. The words "torture porn" get thrown around a lot but... are there people who watch this poo poo like "hell yeah, this is what i'm all about gently caress yeah dude hell loving yeah" besides the fact it's a ripoff of shield hero (or shield hero is a ripoff of it, or whatever the gently caress) mixed with time travel, it just doesn't sound like the pacing is very good; the idea of "helpful power turned harmful" is okay i guess but it doesn't seem like a very good revenge fantasy??

Lots of "can't wait for the uncensored version!" i watched it out of morbid curiosity and it’s just... bad. it’s so bad. the pacing is bad. the animation is bad. i stopped watching in the middle of the second episode because, well, didn’t need to see that, but nothing up to that point would lead me to believe that there’s anything there beyond just an especially twisted take on power fantasy and titties. lotso titties. bazongas. ta tas. also the main character being sexually assaulted so that we know that he’s in the right.

I haven't watched a ton of food shows, the ones that really stuck with me are Silver Spoon (about an agricultural high school) and Wakakozake (the episodes are only 2 minutes long but you'll get it if you check the first episode) silver spoon is great cooking papa is fun if you want some relaxing 90s anime vibes with low stakes; the backgrounds are all done in that sailor moon watercolor aesthetic which is always really nice to look at; yakitake japan is also good but i assume everyone knows about it already i've been meaning to watch bartender for a while but haven't gotten around to it

But ultimately I think the story has thematically landed on the idea that literally everything lovely has happened because of some kind of reactionary power. the ending/where the story is currently would also seem to point to the Great Man Theory that underpins fascism as being... flawed, to say the least but that truffaut quote also applies: it’s hard to include fascism in media without making it appealing on some level to someone, unless you’re making it so cartoonish and abstract (like in the new star wars films) that it ceases to be a coherent ideology (or even ceases to be fascism) and consequentially it looks ridiculous that anyone would believe it nuance is hard

higurashi gou's pacing really is loving atrocious finally got to the part where stuff is actually happening and rapidly diverging from the remake but now in episode 15 it's going way too fast; we're just burning through four loops in one episode? i gotta sit through 12.5 episodes of repetition and we're just gonna diffuse the tension of how each loop gets hosed up by going through it like a clip show? it's antithetical to everything else and it just feels... mean
