Really? That was Pirate's Curse?

Then again, I suppose we are missing some characters that are in that scene. I guess I'm remembering the setting and artwork rather than in-game graphics.

It was as a matter of fact as the incident in question involved Shantae, Risky, Sky and Rottytops getting mistaken for the princess of a desert tribe whom none of them look like.

I love how we're all quietly skipping over the way the Mermaid Factory itself is one giant raving fetish palace all its own.

I know the scene, I just thought it was in this game. But yeah, I should have realized that I had the wrong game based on the fact that those other characters aren't around at the moment (well, except for Sky).

To be fair, this whole franchise is that. Me, Chimera-gui, and Nidoking are talking about a level in a different game that is also a raving fetish palace, which takes place in an actual palace.

That said, it does seem like the series has been leaning more and more heavily on it as time has gone by.

I fought the lava, and the lava won.
The first game doesn't really show any particular signs of being fetish-driven, from what I remember, unless you count Shantae's basic character design being apparently based on I Dream of Jeannie. I think they introduced the large character portraits for dialogue in the third game, which was the first time any of them had much visible detail, and that was also the game with the palace scene. I don't know if you could really call that a "fetish palace" as such, but I don't have any motivation to try to argue that coherently. The mermaid thing, sure, but the series has always had a rather goofy attitude toward long-term consequences. Everything gets resolved in the end, and the rest is more or less glossed over. The worst that happens is the Mayor goes off to sulk somewhere and asks you to bring him something to drink. Everything in between is just meant to be cute and funny.

yeah, I've never felt the need to avoid damage in Shantae because it's just so trivially easy to get that health back. and a bunch of enemies only do quarter or half heart damage so your HP is way bigger than it looks

as compared to a game like Hollow Knight

Speaking of uncomfortable implications how about those ranger enemies just exploding into all of the bones.

Anyways its kind of crazy that there's barely any limit on the bat form. I guess you're stuck on the same level you transformed on?

Correct, Bat form's directional movement is restricted to left - right and you have no control over her flying height so you need to on the same level as wherever your destination is.

She's like Crab in that her utility will become more limited as forms are unlocked though neither will become completely useless thanks to niche partitioning that occurs as forms are unlocked as well.

Yeah, there's no uncomfortable implications there. You can tell they aren't living/thinking things, because that one dude around 1:20 just gleefully ran past Shantae and jumped down the hole where the giant nightmare worm was coming from. Seeing them get destroyed isn't anything to be horrified about.

Plus, you know, they aren't cute like the mermaids were. So gently caress 'em. :colbert:

The race is the other chapter that was a Kickstarter stretch goal. I don't know whether we would have gotten a shorter level without that, or whether this level wouldn't exist, but either way, it feels like this game would have been way too short without the stretch goals we got.

Ohh that makes sense. I like short games these days. I’d say this game is a pretty good length. Could probably do with less mandatory item hunting but I’d see why they wanted to stretch it out that way.

So when you say the game needs a secret tracker, do you mean one aside from the one that shows you what items are in each stage when you select it on the map? Because I don't think there are any collectables that aren't shown on that.

Yeah I do. If you're missing a key in a level for instance, you have no idea where. And there's a bunch of story related items too that doesn't show up in that list.

Funny thing, but Half Genie Hero is actually a bit of an outlier in regard to how it's structured as Risky's Revenge, Pirate's Curse and Seven Sirens are structurally closer to the original Game Boy game as they are more exploratory platformers with the main difference being how towns are traversed.

This is also the only game in the series I have not played beside Seven Sirens since later games are comparatively more polished.

Castlevania 2 Shantae's Quest

That's (for the Gameboy, as far as I remember) some neat art work for the town hub as well.

I believe Shantae was one of the last games published for the Game Boy Color, in the era when they were making crossover GBC/GBA games. One of its secrets involves playing the game on a GBA system, where one of the NPCs will teach you an exclusive transformation dance - on a GBC system, she'll just say that it's for Advanced genies only. The dance still works, if you know it, but they won't teach it to you. For some baffling reason, if you own this game on the 3DS, it will also not teach you the dance, even though I'm sure they could have used the GBA emulation engine. Still waiting to get my copy of the Switch remake, which will hopefully include everything. Maybe they're waiting until there's a variant Switch they can tie it to.

One of the most frustrating things about the original game, aside from almost everything about the original game, is that the various warp dances are your reward for trading in Squids, one of the hidden collectibles. You can learn a dance in each town that will warp you back to that town, but I recommend stocking at least four Squids along the way for Rottytops' Caravan. It's a roving town that moves every night, so if you don't know the right dance, you may have some trouble finding it.

I will admit, though, that the original Spider transformation was really neat. It let you climb certain backgrounds freely, which I don't think they've ever done since. It's one of the few things that disappeared after the original game that I actually miss.

Yeah the Game Boy game, Risky's Revenge and Seven Sirens are basically metroidvanias with dungeons scattered across a sizable map. Pirate's Curse was the closest to Half Genie Hero in that you select islands to travel to though each island has a dungeon and the island Scuttle Town itself is on also has a forest and a palace you travel to on foot.

The first game is the only one where towns are navigated like a level select though, every other game treats the towns as basically platforming areas.

Fun Fact: SlimeGal, Bonelegs and Ikki are the other three monsters that were designed by fan backers on Kickstarter alongside the aforementioned Tuki.

Ikki specifically is an homage to Nintendo Swapnote's Mii mascot Nikki and more specifically her "death" when the 3DS message service, Swapnote, was shut down in November 2013 due to abuse of the system at the time.

Shantae did have Tiger and Naga forms planned but those were scrapped.

Oh hey, nice videos on a game I love. This one's probably neck and neck with Pirate's Curse for me, that one has the best music and I do love well-done pixel art, but the graphics update here really does look nice and it's probably the best one overall in terms of content. Squid Baron's been a fixture since at least Risky's Revenge. He was the first boss there, somewhat deflated by showing up so early in the game and thus clearly not being any challenge at all. In Pirate's Curse, he was more of a character, even indulging Shantae in a bit of questing before turning up as the third boss, claiming that appearing at the game's midpoint meant he was halfway to greatness. I'll leave it to your imagination what role he might have in Seven Sirens.

An yes, Nega-Shantae AKA the reason Shantae was full human for most of Pirate's Curse.

You see Risky's Revenge ends with Risky using a magic lamp to enslave Shantae. However since Shantae is a half-genie, the lamp only captures her genie half leaving Shantae pure human. Risky commands Shantae's other half, trapped inside the lamp, to destroy Shantae; resulting in the birth of the evil clone Nega-Shantae which our heroine ultimately has to destroy, scattering Nega's Dark Magic which is what turned the Tinkerbats into Cacklebats and leads to the Pirate Master's awakening.

Using the lamp that created Nega, Shantae absorbs the Dark Magic released by the Cacklebats upon defeat. During the final battle with the Pirate Master, he eventually demands that Shantae give him the dark magic she had taken from the Cacklebats in exchange for Risky's life which Shantae reluctantly does. When she releases the collected magic however, it is revealed to have turned into light magic which he did not expect would happen and Shantae absorbs the light magic into herself instead, regaining her genie powers as part of the game's true/good ending.

It's also worth noting that Pirate Queen's Quest, the DLC you play as Risky, is non-canon due to its events, and specifically its ending, not lining up with the main game as its Risky's own biased account of the game's events.

And Squid Baron's statement about the majority of bosses being able to recover from explosive defeat actually explains an ending screen you get in Seven Sirens.
