Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

With that in mind, here's a draft of a "welcome to poker in the rear" post to try and get things going:

Welcome to Poker in the Rear, the forums newest old forum!

As some of you might remember, this forum isn't new but it was closed a while ago. We're bringing it back, but it's not going to be exactly the same. So what it is it? It's a place to discuss gambling of all types. The original forum was focused on poker back during the big texas hold 'em phase the US went through, so the new forum will have a distinct poker flavor, but all games of chance are welcome. This includes discussion of all the classic vegas table games, sports gambling, and even those weird bookies in England who will let you place bets on the weather if that's what you're into.

Note that because of this there are probably going to be topics that overlap with other forums. That's OK. If there's a fantasy football thread here and one in SAS we're fine with that. By the same token there are hunting threads in both The Great Outdoors and TFR. Sometimes hobbies overlap and different communities can have different emphases and different takes on them. So don't worry too much about posting a thread here if you think there's one in another forum that it duplicates.

What are the rules?

Make sure you check out the rules thread. That said, in addition to all the big, forum-wide stuff the golden rule here is to :siren:NOT EXCHANGE MONEY BETWEEN GOONS ON THE SOMETHING AWFUL DOT COM DOMAIN:siren: . Talk about gambling all you want, but don't do it here. There is an important legal distinction between a gambling website and a website where people discuss gambling, and it's very important that we are the latter. No staking other goons either. Again, read the rules to get the nuanced version but the main guiding principle is that goon to goon exchanges of cash or gambling tokens or anything else that smells like people making and setting bets on the forums isn't going to be allowed.

So who is running this joint?

We're re-launching this with a pretty broad spectrum of IKs. We grabbed half of them from the poker community here - and a lot of them were very active in the old Poker in the Rear - and we grabbed half of them from the sports gamblers we could find. We're hoping that this will give us a good mix of people who remember and understand the history and legacy of the old forum and people who are going to have ideas about how the forum should change to encompass more than just poker.

We also have a few full time mods watching the shop. Strong Sauce and kalensc are both mods, and one or two mods from other forums might help out here and there. Frankly we're going to be really heavy on mods and IKs for a little bit, but that's fine. We expect the modding team here to change as we get settled in.

Here are your IKs. You will recognize some of them from the old PitR, most notably Scotsman:

Scotsman
Baddog
Stefan Prodan
Edward Mass
Silvergoose

If you have any major concerns and can't take it to an IK shoot me (Cyrano4747) a PM. One of the other admins would be fine too, but I'm the one keeping the closest eye on this place right now.

What should I expect here?

Right now we don't really have an answer to that. This is a new forum, which means we're all in the exciting position of figuring out what it is together. So if you really want it to move in one direction or another get active, talk to your IKs, and above all post. At the end of the day the various subs on SA are driven by the communities that gather in them far more than any mod or admin direction, and this is going to be no different.

Wait, isn't gambling a destructive habit that ruins lives?

Yes, some people have serious problems with gambling and other gaming addiction. This was one of the biggest concerns that the mods and admins had when we were discussing whether or not to bring this forum back. At the end of the day we feel that there are a lot of things in the world that are enjoyed by huge swaths of humanity and, for an unfortunate few, also become debilitating addictions. Alcohol and drugs are the two biggest examples. We think that there is room to have threads and forums where people can discuss these, but are also going to do our best to support anyone who has a problem.

There is a thread for gambling addiction here. Please, go take a look at it. Ask yourself if this is a fun pastime you enjoy or a compulsion. There are resources there for getting help and the admins stand ready to assist however we can. If someone feels that having a forum like this is too much of a temptation for them, if they have a gambling problem and don't want to even see this place, the admins can do some behind the scenes magic so the forum doesn't show for your. We would, for example, offer the same thing to a recovering drug addict who didn't even want TCC showing up in their list of forums.

Hi everyone!

I'm Stefan Prodan, I'm one of the new IKs. This subforum literally changed my life and I'm glad it's back. My career began with a dude named "obithrawn" on here started with a thread called "my journey into online poker" in SAS and after following some other goons like Adar who were playing 3/6 limit and making some small amount I decided to give it a shot. I've been a professional poker player now for 14 years, 3 of those were spent posting in PITR in probably its heyday learning how to play before deciding to do it full time.

I know this subforum is never going to be what it was during the poker boom but I think there's a lot of people maybe still interested and honestly it's still a decent way to make some good side money, even if I wouldn't say it's a good time to try and play professionally. Looking forward to posting with everyone again!

Didn't expect to see this back, glad it is. Really interested to see updated resources on what in the hell is going on in the world of online poker as even I lost track of it in the last 5 years as it got too annoying to play for a living.

I'ma buck you up.
This is cool, I didn’t really expect to see this forum come back!

Hopefully we can get some good discussion going, I don’t really know anything about various games, I’m just a poker guy. But maybe we could get that pool savant goon to post some of his great stories even. I am interested in learning a couple games since sometimes gamblers get pissed at you if you step up to a table with no idea what you’re doing.

I know sports betting is all the rage now, but I’m sure there’s still a lot of poker heads around here.

Hey all, I'm silvergoose, also one of the new IKs. I honestly mostly played low limit non-big bet stuff, focusing on razz and other mixed games, but I'm happy pitr is back, happy to help out, and anyone wanting to discuss non-holdem games I'm all there for it.

Please don't expect good strategy advice out of me though.

I folks! I'm incredibly satisfied that PitR is back open again. The poker goons have been consigned to the Traditional Games forum for nearly a decade, where they were of course totally welcome, but I think always felt like it was just a place to dump them after PitR was closed. As mod of TG, I wanted to do right by these fine people.

I can't take all the credit for making this happen, but I'd like to think that I got the ball rolling by suggesting it a little while back to the mods and admins, who were immediately supportive. I hope it works out! I'm confident we've put the sub into good hands and I'd be delighted to help out in any way I can.

I have a question regarding your job.

Seeing as you are in Vegas, do you take bets on non-US sports? How do you calculate odds for sports that nobody in the US knows or understands?

i.e. Would you take bets on the upcoming India vs England Test cricket series? Or an Essendon vs Carlton AFL game?

Those are two examples from the highest leagues. Do you accept bets for lower, but still professional level, leagues? To use the two sports I mentioned, would you accept bets on a Karnataka vs Tamil Nadu Ranji Trophy game, or a Williamstown vs Frankston VFL game?

How would you calculate odds for these games, and if someone came in asking to watch them on the TV, could you get it for them?

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Also like Vic Mackey, now that I am a Mod and gain immunity I can also say that I worked at an online poker company during the poker boom. If there's any interest in that I can post an AMA or something about it.

Yes, there's a goon that worked there with me before the move to Ireland that doesn't post much any longer and there was another goon who worked there after I left who I think everyone knows but I don't want to reveal in case they don't want that out there. I think I had been gone about 2 years or so before Black Friday. But I interacted with everyone that was involved

I like the idea of re-introductions. Good to see you still hanging around buddy!

I'm Scotsman. I was the mod of PITR soon after its inception up until it randomly got closed one day. It is what it is.

I only play poker on a casual basis these days however I owe a lot to my time running PITR and playing poker for a living as it helped me understand the analytical thinking behind gambling that much more. I'm big into sports betting now, running various betting tips websites and betting sports practically professionally. (It's not my primary job but it may as well be)

So with us looking to make this a more of a gambling talking forum, I'm cool with chiming in and talking about it. I've also got a lot of experience in building communities etc so looking forward to hopefully getting PITR thriving again.

Anyway great to be here and I'll look to create some new threads to get some discussion going over the next few days.

We do! Cricket, Aussie Football, Rugby, even darts are booked by us. Odds are determined by our inhouse traders, but for non-US centric events they typically yield to what our HQ in the UK books it at.

Typically we only take whatever the highest ranked league is for each sport and region, so we would book AFL games but not any lower leagues. It's pretty much surface level affair here in Vegas anyway.

How would you calculate odds for these games, and if someone came in asking to watch them on the TV, could you get it for them?

As mentioned before, for these games we usually look to what our traders in the UK are setting these odds at and apply accordingly. These bets always have to go through trader review before we can approve them. As for airing them, we're at the mercy of whatever airs on DirecTV here and based on whatever package our host casino is subscribed to.

Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Not at all! This year has seen a lot of interest in betting overseas events, so it's been a great learning experience myself this year.

I'm gonna try and update the poker FAQ soon, I had been kicking around writing one for awhile when it was brought up to me that this forum was coming back but I got kinda busy and didn't get around to it. I can probably just use the framework of what's already there and do my best to update it, although there are some things that I'm not even sure about. Like for instance, I'm pretty far removed from being a beginner at this point and I'm not sure what to recommend to beginners as far as books anymore. Anything I read would be hopelessly outdated now, so maybe I can look at some reviews or something.

I don't know if anyone remembers me, but I was NeoRaven back in the PITR "glory" days. Huge thanks to everyone involved with teaching me and getting me fairly rich in college and helping me pay for my last 2 years completely with donkey money (and rakeback/bonus humping). Are any of the WSOP bracelet winners still around? Did the Bad Beats Crew ever move to discord? I still have fond memories of meeting everyone I met during the WSOP in Vegas when there was a quasi-meet, but that was legit 15 years ago so I feel old thinking about it now.

Also they legalized Sports Betting in my state so I've been making kind of a bunch at that since November? Between odds boosts and bonuses, it's been easier money than poker. Also I made several thousand (and counting) at politics betting over the last 6 months. Although if poker got legal, I would probably jump back in and get good again.

Random aside, maybe I'll make a thread, but what's the deal with poker on twitch? I assume there's some delay, but it seems kinda weird and I haven't been able to get into it. I was wondering if there were any good folks streaming that you know of, or any entertaining degenerates who lose and scream to laugh at. (Aside, anyone remember tuff_fish? I still sometimes remember "gently caress ME IN FRONT OF MY FAMILY" and laugh)

Holy poo poo I can't believe PITR is back from the dead.

I've barely played online since Black Friday, but pre-covid I was able to get a couple trips each year to play live NLHE up to 10/20. With PITR revived I might be inspired to put some money online and lose it all because I'm loving terrible now :(

PITR dying and online poker going away in the US actually ended up working out pretty well for me, because it forced me to get a real job. These days instead of losing tens of thousands at poker I get to lose hundreds of thousands on commodities. If I'm lucky some day I'll get to lose even larger amounts of money!
