JOINING THE SA FORUMS WILL REMOVE THIS BIG AD, THE ANNOYING UNDERLINED ADS, AND STUPID INTERSTITIAL ADS!!!

You can: log in, read the tech support FAQ, or request your lost password. This dumb message (and those ads) will appear on every screen until you register! Get rid of this crap by registering your own SA Forums Account and joining roughly 150,000 Goons, for the one-time price of $9.95! We charge money because it costs us money per month for bills, and since we don't believe in showing ads to our users, we try to make the money back through forum registrations.

Jeffrey of YOSPOS posted:

Storing payment info is a :can: in that there are all sorts of Very Serious Security Requirements to taking credit card payments, and some of them are easily sidestepped by not storing any sort of payment information. This is not just me being paranoid, but would also represent new costs as there is separation required from the rest of the servers. Maybe making browser autocomplete work with our form would be a good step? Then you could save payment info in your browser and use it on the site more easily, without adding the burden of securely storing payment info to our backend.

As far as the autocomplete forms go, I know chrome and firefox both have 'secure'(i haven't checked how secure) storage for CC info, if the fields are correctly labeled.

I think the best use of the front page would be to condense it into an approved feed of forums content, with plenty of forum links. Which is something that should come AFTER the forums themselves are cleaned up and improved- it should be the last thing done. I think that way the front page could serve as an advertisement for the forums. Include a small timeline about it being 20 years strong and better than ever. Show off things SA is famous/responsible for. Advertise it as an anti to social media.

The best front page articles were literally articles about the forums, either summarizing funny threads, or retelling stories that came out(the flaming beehive), or the final results of a photoshop thread.

See, out-of-nowhere photoshops like this are reason #6,536 that I've stuck around the forums all these years.

My immediate thought was "only goons would just turn the state of the forums thread into a photoshop thread"

Its interesting skipping from a thread where someone is railing about how excessive computer usage is a massive drain on the planets limited resources to a thread where someone is talking about redundantly leeching and storing every meme posted here as extremely important cultural artifacts.

Might wanna keep in mind that we are already being archived by the Library of Congress, so its unlikely that imgur dying will cause everything to go poof to the ages.

My understanding is it's the entire front page but that's it. And we were never able to confirm that it was still happening.

You can go to the LoC website and the listing for SA shows the last time it was updated. It was still doing so last year, but appears to only update every few months.

Cool, thank you. I just remembered it being spotty and nobody having a solid reason for why. Some of the older records seemed more thorough.

There ya go. I'm in the bathtub phoneposting so I'm not going to go through to see what got archived, but its as recent as 2020.

Wow, 176 snapshots, mostly between 2014 and 2019. Nothing from 2020 yet. And not nearly everything from any period. Too bad.

Everyone need to call their congresscritters to have this travesty fixed.

Read up to page 10, already voted 5, would also throw some buck on a patreon.

One thing I want to bring up, some of the user profile options are superfluous now. Who even uses ICQ anymore? Can you actually use yahoo or AOL instant messenger, I thought they had shut down? This is surely fairly low on the list of stuff to do, but a small overhaul of user profiles wouldn't hurt.

ICQ is still the primary way goons communicate. Weren't you invited to the group chat?

Waffleimages isn't exactly gone, there are still a few node alive. It was a distributed hosting thing set up explicitly so we wouldn't lose everything if another host went down.

If you can find the IP of one of the live nodes, you can use that to get to alot of the old stuff. Thats what Jeffrey's script does.
