Agrias120, I totally agree, and would like to add... Oh wait I already did the big-text gimmick ... GEnNnNnNnnN-CoooOOooOoOooNNNNNnn SoftNum posted:Hello friends. No for real I see you did join the Discord (any other lurkers, come on in!!!) and yeah, I mean we have not had a Gen-Con since we abandoned GroupMe in 2020 so I cannot swear this is still true, but any time of day and even many times of night you can find Goons doing something by popping in there. I think in general 3 A.M. - 7 A.M. were the only hours people were not talking actively about doing stuff. All of us are cool and good, too, which is nice. And no matter your level of drunkenness there are a lot of people to match your goals (as in, even at Shots Wednesday I was at a table eating pretzels and bratwurst with three other Goons who do not drink)

G E N - C O N ! ! ! Edit: WOW I LITERALLY MISSED THE FIRST ONE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHPP0cGBED8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=calZ7a32If8 Might as well add this in: Even though I learned this a couple of weeks ago I feel compelled to warn everyone now The horrible news that BEE COFFEE ROASTERS' location across the street from the convention center is closed The Yelp page says it is due to reopen on July 2, 2022. Well, O.K., sounds good? Hardly any time left to wait now. Dr. Quarex fucked around with this message at 15:35 on Sep 13, 2021 |

Also the Ram is gone, replaced with Goodwood, another brewpub chain. I have been informed that they are horrifically understaffed by service industry newbs, so don't count on getting in and out of there quickly. New local pizza joint Futuro is open for all your various pizza style needs, located close to Indiana City brewery, and there's a dope local bar over on 25th and Delaware called A Taproom that has great beer. Closer into downtown is Tapper's Arcade bar, which is having a Three Floyds tap takeover on Thursday. Game. Drink. Repeat.

I thought the Ram closed a few years ago? I could be misremembering, having a year hiatus has really messed with my recall ability

Every time someone posts about how much they miss the Ram (not saying this about you, obviously you spurred on this thought) I want to angrily say DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH BETTER IT WAS 15 YEARS AGO but like, if they enjoyed the Privateer Press Pub they enjoyed it. Fine. But drat did I miss the Just General Gaming Stuff pub.

I know we're running at reduced capacity and whatnot, but it was jarring today to see how few people there were, and the exhibit hall being chopped down was wild too. I think I saw everything in there in like two hours. I have a few things I wanna go back and buy, and I need to visit the artist section again, but that's about it. I'll prolly get down on a MtG prerelease thing too I guess.

Yeah it was amazing being back in the 2003 Exhibit Hall again Definitely could get used to having space between people when shopping Also drat, days are much longer when you are alternating between gaming and hanging out with Goons instead of just being at the Auction for 10 hours. And no not in a bad way

Headed over to my first GenCon late this morning and wandered around for a few hours. Notes: - My phone's ancient and so it was on its last legs just from using the GPS to get there, so I didn't get as many pics as I wanted. Boo! - Still, I mostly just wanted to look around the vendor area and buy some gifts for friends/family for this Christmas, which I did. Yay! - I know I passed some goons on the show floor at some point because I overheard someone make a reference to Groverhaus, but I missed who it was so I couldn't introduce myself. - I enjoyed chatting with a few folks who recognized my Hangzhou Spark jersey (it's an Overwatch League team). We fuckin' suck so it was nice to commiserate about it. - I was pleasantly surprised by the general lack of skeevy stuff for sale! There was some kind of hidden booth I passed that was checking IDs, and there was a huge booth that looked like it was selling anime porn, but that was it from what I could tell. Obviously there was a lot of half-naked art (and one guy whose art consisted entirely of Giant Ladies), but the kind of stuff you'd see in an FYE's anime section or whatever, nothing too scandalous. - It's funny to see people complaining about the exhibit hall being small; it seemed enormous to me. - I was a little disappointed by the number of people cosplaying. I mean, I wasn't, so I don't really have room to complain, but I guess my mental image of a convention was that a third of people would be in costume. I'd say like 5% were, and maybe another 10% had some kind of costume element like a silly hat. - I came closer than I should've to buying a $250 gunblade. That's the real skeevy poo poo.

Slimy Hog posted:. Also yes Surf Rock, the Exhibit Hall still takes hours to get through and is definitely bigger than Origins' hall so anyone complaining about its size is clearly spoiled. Not least of which because the absence of almost all of the loving obnoxious terrible megabooths that have like tables and chairs filling the spaces where dozens of other booths could be means the total is not nearly as low as you might think. Though I think it is certainly down 25-33%

The vendor hall is about 33% normal vendors and crowd.

The playtest hall is pretty bad. Games fire every two hours instead of as needed and they waste a half hour calling each individual designer, scheduled playtester, and stand-by ticket. You also need to be there a half hour before to have a real chance to pick a game, especially if you're in a group, because that's when they start handing out tickets. The descriptions for the games are misrepresentative, one designer told me he wanted it to say his game was 1v1 but they didn't add it, another game was labeled as a CCG even though it clearly wasn't. Also, most of the games are in final production with either a completed Kickstarter, one currently running, or one about to start. Designers are using the playtest hall as a cheaper exhibition hall booth for advertisement purposes and don't actually need their game playtested.

I'd say like 5% were, and maybe another 10% had some kind of costume element like a silly hat. I’d say the ratio is somewhat lower this year but not significantly so. GenCon is more of a game hobbyist con rather than one of the media consumption ones that draw all the major cosplayers.

Unless you read the forums where the people who stopped attending but love complaining talk about how the show is entirely "women who don't even game dressed up as anime characters" I do think the cosplay percentages are lower for sure this year, but Saturday is also the biggest day since that is when the costume contest happens (and in other years the costume parade)
