It's easy to gripe about working for the government, but I'm extremely cognizant of having a relatively large amount of separate pools of sick AND vacation leave that I have an entitlement to use.

I remember telling someone about a former job that counted unscheduled leave on Mondays and Fridays from your vacation leave instead of your sick leave and she was astonished at the idea of paid leave. Florida sucked, that job sucked, I thought having to use paid vacay to cover paid sick leave sucked...turns out that last one was one of the few good things about Florida.

When I got hired at my new second part-time job, they just changed the official uniform right as I started working. I felt like such a dork coming in to work when everyone else could wear their company issue t-shirts or the old uniform because they didn't have to change over yet. Now we all look like members of the dork army and I feel a tiny bit better.

Congrats on your freedom to get q-tip skullfucked I guess. I've worked at places (and chances are if you're posting in this thread that you've worked at these places too) where you have to come in even if you're visibly sick and a manager has to decide if you're sick enough to be sent home. At a work place where you can just call in, there's no excuse not to.

Earlier this year I got a second part-time job to make ends meet. The library job in which I have a master's degree that I've trained for for most of my life pays $11 an hour, and that's after multiple raises. I took a job as a lunch lady/receptionist at one of the local college's dining halls and even after bumping base pay a $15 an hour they were still having problems filling positions. And because this is the south, everyone's blaming the shortage of workers willing to put up with corporate wage-slave bullshit as "nobody wants to work."

I made a reservation booking using the new system and forgot to include two data points. I'm not the only one who forgets these data points. I just got an email from the boss sent to all employees: since all bookings go to her for approval, she's going to immediately reject any bookings missing the data points, and if customers get mad that their bookings weren't approved, it's our fault for not adding the data.

I get that she's frustrated, and that email was probably cathartic to write and send, but for someone constantly after us about professionalism and positive training, she's being a gigantic hypocrite.

Minstrel/blackface shows had a lot to do with it too.

I guess today I'm the dumb poo poo doing work?

I've been shared out to another department at one of my jobs. The department head position is open and they're seeking applicants, but I don't want to apply for it. Yes I need full-time work. I am stupidly overqualified for that job. It doesn't look require a degree at all, and I have two. My ideal scenario is that the assistant to the vacant position gets that position, and I get the assistant's position. The assistant and I get along great. They don't have a degree, and this is probably as high as they're going to be able to climb without one. I would much rather have the assistant position, and work one job for 40 hours a week rather than two jobs 50 hours a week. Apparently I should be putting my career first and only looking out for myself and all of that. But in my mind, if the hiring committee for this vacant position is going to Passover the assistant, who knows their stuff and has been doing the job for months now, in favor of someone completely new to the company, then the hiring committee are a bunch of idiots. 10 years ago I was the assistant in a similar scenario, and they brought in an outsider who was theoretically competent on paper but did not prove to be doing the actual job, and it sucked.

This is not the same workplace that keeps borrowing the mending supplies for nefarious purposes. No, this is the prestigious workplace, and I should be thinking whichever deity that I worship every night that I was lucky enough they hired me.

The head of the IT department at one of my jobs absolutely hates Macs, and most of our wireless AV equipment will not work with Macs for that reason. If someone books our meeting room space in person, we can ask them about their technology needs and we can troubleshoot at the time of booking, but if somebody books online, there's a fair chance that they will bring something that refuses to work wirelessly with our network, and because IT refuses to update the online booking form with questions about technology needs for bookings, and if it's a Mac, we don't have the cables to hardwire somebody into the system.

Fortunately the presenter was pretty gracious about the whole thing.

I spent the first 2 hours of today trying to sort out a catering order I had made for mandatory workplace holiday. Fun that somehow did not get transmitted to the restaurant through their online ordering app.

But I spent most of my day at work trying to complete a deadline that got shortened by a week because when people were figuring out deadlines, they accidentally used the organization wide timetable and not The department timetable, because of course we need to get our bullshit done so we can pass it on up to the next person in the chain.

And late to the other job. And I will have to ask a co-worker if they can drop me off at my car that's parked on the other side of town in a parking garage where I don't hope they don't tow me.

Whatever days aren't on a weekend or officially made part of the state holiday, we have to use PTO to cover. I just started this year. I don't have a lot of PTO to begin with. I'm also pissed that job downtime based around a holiday I don't celebrate prevents me from working, instead of working those 32 hours and banking it for religious holidays I do observe (like, this coming Monday).
