canada made some huge mistakes with covid response but one of the best things was implementing cerb (emergency response benefit) for 2k/month almost immediately. it's allowed people like my gf who has only been able to work for 6 out of the last 12 to...well, y'know, survive. how you guys have gone nearly a year now on what, 2000 bucks is beyond my comprehension.

The American way is to put more generous benefits (like Bernie's $2800/month) behind a means-tested and local government-broken unemployment system that makes you jump through hoops, on fire, singing the national anthem to get anything. Then, when the government gives you enough for 3-4 months at most and stops, your television news-induced brain worms make you demand everything get opened up. Similar situations for big businesses (yay, money we didn't need) and small businesses (restaurants and etc). At some point, when it's time to hit the give-everyone-money-button, nobody knows where the button is, but they find the button at the IRS. But oops, the button is actually broken and designed to take people's money, and also doesn't identify "everyone". Then the everyone becomes everyone* with another means-test to exclude brand-new employed because we have no data on them, so hopefully they can get through the unemployment system! And oops, everyone* gets a Trump letter about how awesome everything is! Keep America Great! Then we charge the Capitol because people decided that the above was just fine.

We started our taxes yesterday, and we had to tell the IRS how much stimulus money we received...from them. Also they should stop calling it a stimulus and call it something like an emergency tax refund.

oh ours was completely means tested as well, you didn't get boo if you were employed still. only those who lost their jobs or were temporarily laid off, or were only earning a fraction of their prior earnings were eligible. for example, i have been working the entire time at a workplace as an "essential" worker. i've received no additional benefits or stimulus, nor do i feel as if i require it. mind you, our pm also did not campaign on "every american gets 2k".

If your income is from employment and trades, the IRS knows exactly how much you owe them already. they need to give you the homework so that TurboTax can get a cut by charging you to do your homework. That literally is the whole reason these days.

In terms of why these documents come late, I assume it’s a volume and some stupid cost saving thing. One time I actually had to harangue a guy to get one. Still better then the other people on the project who had to estimate things.
