Initial vaccine refusal rate for workers at senior living/care facilities was upwards of 70% in some locations. It’s since gone down thanks to a very intense and personal persuasion campaign, but vaccine skepticism is still too high among certain elements of the medical community- not necessarily among doctors and nurses, but those who work in support roles.

That is insane. Does anyone know if the split is occurring along a specific line? Do they just hate Trump and don't trust it or are they hard core and feel vaccinnes are "infringing on their rights?"

This WaPo article goes into greater detail but here’s relevant quotes:

quote:

David Grabowski, a Harvard University health policy professor, said the numbers shouldn’t surprise anyone familiar with long-term care facilities, where low wages and poor labor conditions — and earlier missteps fighting the coronavirus pandemic — have created a well of mistrust, especially among the Black and Latino workers who dominate the industry.

“This is a forgotten workforce that hasn’t been treated well for years,” Grabowski said. “We’ve been slow with [personal protective equipment], we’ve been slow with hazard pay, and all of a sudden now, they want to go fast with vaccinations. . . . There’s good reason they’re so distrustful.”

quote:

DeWitt said he called dozens of the facility’s workers and found many had been influenced by online misinformation about the vaccine and mistrust of the medical establishment, fueled by historical abuses like the Tuskegee syphilis study and the ongoing lack of access to medical care in Baltimore’s communities of color.

“These folks don’t even have access to a doctor when they’re sick. Then suddenly you say, ‘Show up in a parking lot and get this mysterious vaccine.’ It’s hard for them to trust you,” DeWitt said. “People of color have become very pessimistic about being guinea pigs.”

It’s really unfortunate, but understandable in context. Fortunately it does seem that the personal persuasion touches by supervisors and colleagues is helping to reverse this.

Every single one of my friends with kids has had a COVID scare in their home, or has repeatedly had their child care disrupted, because workers at their daycare tested positive. In some cases, more than once. It makes me feel really, really glad I don’t have kids.

Also, with Cuomo opening up stadiums and indoor dining in Feb and weddings and such in March, right as new variants are starting to become entrenched in the US, I fear that we’re basically inviting vaccine resistance and more death at this point. This should be the time where we hunker down and hold what we got for the final push, not start to cast off the restrictions because some people are getting vaccinated (still too slowly despite the Biden administration’s push to get as many shots in arms as possible.)

Finally, Crooked Hillary may be brought to justice:

quote:

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) suggested that proceeding with the impeachment trial of a former official could lead, for instance, to the future impeachment of former secretary of state Hillary Clinton.

...

“Is it not true that under this new precedent, a future House facing partisan pressure to ‘lock her up’ could impeach a former secretary of state, and a future Senate forced to put her on trial and potentially disqualify from any future office?” Rubio asked the impeachment managers and Trump’s attorneys.

Gotta love how people who would have died at the hands of Trump’s mob had they caught them are going to vote to acquit the man who incited them. Feel like there’s a word for it that the alt-right really likes...

Of course Biden is going to call on Congress to do something on guns on the anniversary of the Parkland shooting, but as was pointed out, that doesn’t mean they’ll do it, at least not imminently. I’d like to think they’d understand that doing anything polarizing and useless as an AWB (rifles of any sort, including semi-autos or bolt actions, represent a fraction of the overall deaths caused by firearms) will absolutely kill the House and Senate in 22-24 and/or invite a very embarrassing SCOTUS ruling, but then again this is the party that never stopped living in the 90s while also thinking people like Mayor Pete are the future of the party.

I could get behind all transfers and sales, especially for handguns, needing a background check so long as NICS was made relatively instantaneous and accessible. That and for straw purchasers to be prosecuted at something higher than the abysmally low rate that they currently are.

I know I can't take my 80k job anywhere and basically had the choice to live where I do and take it or take a similar pay job in an area where housing costs 2x more than what I already have.

I’m feeling annoyed by his tweet, and maybe one reason is because he lives in the Trinidad neighborhood of DC, which is a hood that has become increasingly gentrified and displaced its older, poorer Black residents into Maryland as predominantly White people bought low-cost real estate and have ridden the home equity wave since. I also don’t know what his family situation is, but I can tell you that if you aren’t lucky enough to have childcare subsidized by your employer, you’re talking about costs approaching the level of a second mortgage payment for two kids. A lot of my friends and I make over $150k in household income but a bill like that would push a lot of us dangerously close to that “can’t afford a sudden $1,000 expense” level, and no one’s buying a $6 latte to go with their $11 avocado toast at that point.

There’s a hectoring tone in this guy’s tweet. Not all industries and cities are created equal when it comes to careers, and just because someone lives in a place like NYC or DC or LA doesn’t mean that everyone there is living in the lap of luxury. Hell, in my neighborhood, if I go a half mile in one direction, it’s ambassador’s residences and old money mansions, but a half mile in the opposite direction results in public housing and visible indicators of urban poverty.

They’re clearly doing something wrong but it’s way more common than you think. The amount of people that are legit worried every time there’s an actual government shutdown is pretty insane.

What’s super hosed up is that I don’t feel comfortable spending what you have to spend to get a house where I’m at. I don’t know how people with “normal” incomes do it. I make like 3 times the average household income where I’m at yet the median house price is north of $400k.

Making my mortgage payment is dead easy for my wife and I, but I will be the first to admit that the only reason we're homeowners today is because my parents helped us out with the down payment. This is the case for several of my friends, not just in DC, but in also in places that don't have high home prices like Connecticut or rural Oregon.
