goethe.cx posted:I'm still a little confused why right-wing media didn't do anything with the accusation. Sure, you could say that Trump's a rapist too, but hypocrisy never stopped them before. I'm pretty sure for a while they did, but again, Trump and Biden are on the same side of making sure you don't believe women, and it was signalled early on that the Democrats were doing a campaign of total silence and gaslighting over it.

The Republicans were actively mindful to be more sensitive towards Kavanaugh's accuser an absolute loving magnitude or two more than the Democrats were towards Tara Reade, it's not even a contest. Republicans knew they might actually get judged by their actions. Democrats knew an establishment approved candidate would get a free pass. And this was right about when they made drat well sure Bernie was ruled out, and after the 'body language expert' to prove Bernie was a secret Jewish rapist landed with a dull thud.

I do remember media saying they had interviewed a hundred people who'd known Reade at some point, and acted if that gave any credibility rather than being the actions of a desperate loving stalker.

Like, the Republicans made sure to appear to be respectful towards Kavanaugh's accuser and downplay her because they knew it'd make them look bad to be going after her, while the Democrats and their affiliated media went for a full and total monstering of Tara Reade. And it came fresh off the latest attempts to smear Bernie Sanders by having a 'body language expert' declare him to be an obvious sexual predator based on basically phrenology. It all ties in with a deeply unpleasant turn of the liberal sphere into aggressive Pleasantville level denial of reality and aggressively attacking anyone who dares threaten their perfect world by bringing up actual problems and issues. (actually kinda funny with WandaVision coming out about now)

Wondering if MeToo getting dumpstered was the canary in the coal mine; now the protests in Australia and the UK being met with brutality and sneers with the so-called opposition parties making themselves invisible, with the full aid of the media, is setting the stage for further institutional violence against women and women's rights being rolled back to enable institutional abuses.

The DSA's whole deal is to be a parallel support structure rather than an actual party, given it's a lot easier to run as a Democrat than it is to get any meaningful support from the party apparatus as a leftist. The US system is set up to make third parties not anywhere near worth the effort. Especially since the party has much less ability to actually control its representatives compared to say, the UK system.

Apparently Northram is kind of a specific case given all of the options other than him are somehow worse, he's actually done tangible good things for minorities in the state and continues to do so especially since that's the only way he stays in power, and his reaction has been to apologise and accept fault rather than triple down.

It's QAnon for liberals, not surprised it's become infused with Russiagate.

I think it was better when Democrats just tried to pretend Tara Reade never existed, but this was the inevitable result, the chilling effect of doing a total reversal on sexual assault accusations when it was inconvenient to acknowledge them. Every scumbag who puts a D next to their name has a new weapon.

You can also have cases where poo poo's basically an open secret but in circles that actually get exposure it's considered completely verboten. The Dan Schneider stuff comes to mind, where apparently even back in the 2000s you had UK and EU sites talking about it while it was apparently suppressed in the US. (for more info see the CineD sexual assault thread) It's also more going with about how the dialogue on rape and sexual predators changed so drastically so very recently, and it seems like a lot of people who consider themselves progressive will suddenly try to wrench the clock right back when one of their faves is implicated. Also it becomes pretty especially egregious when the candidates propped up by the party are implicated, and the answer basically is 'If you don't vote for this rapist, you're a Trump supporter' along with all the usual hostage-taking and demands that the left basically shut up and smile.

This is pretty much where the liberal ideal of trusting in systems and processes to do the right thing runs into a loving brick wall, because said systems and processes favour protecting and denying the crimes of predators as long as they make money, which is a bit of a self-reinforcing process. If you aren't willing to kill your heroes, eventually all your heroes will be monsters.

People have literally spent decades in prison for the crime of owning popular music (or more often, being black) while within the vague region of a crime, and yet you can barely keep a high-profile serial rapist with literally dozens of accusers dating back half a century in prison for more than a year before getting out because some prosecutor didn't dot all his i's. People are right to be mad. This is complete absurdity hiding behind the fig-leaf of an institution that constantly betrays, enslaves and destroys the most vulnerable.

This really demonstrates how taking partisan media at face value and guilt by association feeds into the worst possible ideas. The right must absolutely love it how they can platform victims of sexual harassment entirely sympathetically and cause liberals to actively regress on the issues in response. Yet another case of ceding ground to the right due to being so easily manipulated.

Given the timing of the accusations during the primaries, it's quite possible that orders came down from on high that suddenly Biden had to be sainted rather than an also-ran and the story went from supported to quashed with extreme prejudice.

Considering we're seeing such a prominent organisation be a blatant op to protect abusers while claiming to fight them, is it becoming more clear now why the starry-eyed claims of 'Just organise and vote!' come off so bitterly insensitive? We've seen this happen over and over and over to any remotely progressive cause, where if the leaders don't end up committing suicide via bullet to the back of the head they end up 'asking for perspective' as to why they're doing the literal opposite of their intended cause. Also comes to mind the people genuinely trying to call out Cori Bush for hiring private security.

Pretty much anything with a catchy, non-disputed name and official structure that claims to be attacking unjust power structures should be side-eyed at best. These organisations are often ops, or quickly turn indistinguishable from them.

There is something weird about accusations without a specific name dropped, but it's not like there's a guide how to act here. Maybe it might help to drum up support and get attention first rather than have people immediately go on the defensive for the accused. Huma I'd only really known as Hillary Clinton's familiar, literally dressing exactly the same as her and all, and apparently encouraged by Hillary to marry her terrible husband for political reasons. I have absolutely no trouble believing she's suffered sexual harassment and assault from powerful men and only recently felt there was any opportunity to speak up about it without destroying her life.
