Within a year of flunking out of college, my son came out of his room and announced that he was going to be a scientific glassblower. He had discovered that one of the finest glassblowing programs in the country was offered at our county community college. He even figured out how to pay for it (tuition reimbursement offered at a perk at his job). He was dead serious about learning the art, craft and soul of lampworking. After he was done his assignments for the day or week, he would make things out of scrap glass. Assignments: Fooling around: (yes, including pipes...) He now works in Vineland, NJ which seems to be the center of the universe for scientific glass: His lathe a work-piece: Unfortunately, the videos of him working up pieces are only on Instagram as links.
