Sleep with one eye open

We're off to Gritty Gritty land

Talk about visiting various places to gamble lots of money here. Whether it be the fanciest casinos, which under the radar spots have the best odds, or places to avoid, there are many places to win or lose tons of money on planet Earf. Or if you ate some massive losses, discuss all the other non-gaming activities in the city in the attempt to cheer yourself up afterwards.

I've never been to Vegas or anywhere else really, so I'll bow out here :effort:

MACAU
i went to macau like 5-6 years ago... no one speaks portuguese. it's basically cantonese, mandarin, then english.

If you're getting to macau via hong kong and want to take the ferry, make sure your plane lands well before 9pm in HK or else you can't take the airport macau ferry and instead you have to take a huge detour into kowloon and then take the ferry from there. wastes about 2 hours. the ferry takes anywhere from 1 hour to 1.5 hours.

if you get sick easily, i would recommend not taking the ferries. i barely held it in by eating on two packs of saltines both ways and honestly wasn't sure if i'd make it. apparently they opened a bus route in 2018 that goes from HK to Macau through the Mainland so take that if you're more prone to getting seasick. bus is also cheaper and quicker (apparently).

_BUT_ if you're a real baller, pay like $500-$600 USD and take a helicopter from HK to macau. no lining up with the plebes and you can get into macau in 15 minutes!

----

macau has its own money but its about 1:1 to hong kong dollar, however the cabs also charged me a small fee in the exchange. wasn't sure how legal it was but i wasn't going to argue over the difference. most of the casinos will give you 1:1 rate.

the casinos are split into two parts on the island, the one where you land via ferry is just "macau" and the other section is called taipa, there's a third section of the country, "coloane", that doesn't have much gambling but it has the original lord stow's bakery with their portuguese egg tart. that cost me $30USD to take a cab over. probably not worth it.

anyways i was only there for one full day after getting in the previous night sometime after midnight... the plan was to sightsee during the day and go gamble at night

i saw: that church where the only side left standing is the frontside (Ruins of Saint Paul's), sendo square, and the really famous casino (Grand Lisboa), and some other not as famous ones.. that was about 3-4 hours, after which something i ate combined with the fact that it was raining and i had no umbrella cost me about 4 hours or so back at my hotel.

afterwards i walked around the casinos nearest me.. and the most popular game they spread is called sic bo, or literally precious dice. its like craps if craps had 3 dice and if you won or lost on every throw. i had utterly no interest in the game, they spread everything else but just tons of sic bo tables when i went there. anyways i think i ended up playing some blackjack and i lost.

i didn't play any poker because my options at the time were to take a cab over to the venetian that was on taipa, or walk over to the wynn casino which was nearby. i walked to the wynn, their poker room was closed due to some issue... so i gave up and didn't end up going to venetian to play poker. today there are many more options to play poker in macau. but also if you're not chinese, just know its legal to speak cantonese, mandarin or english at the tables and that while the dealers will understand bet/raise/fold/call, they probably won't be able to settle disputes you have with the other players.

anyways the next day i woke up, took a cab to lord stow's. ate their egg tart. i forget if the total cost of the cab was $30 USD or one way.. anyways, the egg tarts were good, but also it took a $30/$60 cab ride to get there.

-----

would i go back to macau? before i would have said no, because i had been to HK so many times before and it seemed only worth it if i included HK as part of the trip to macau.. now with the pandemic i'll basically go anywhere after covid dies down.

You make me feel bad cause all I've seen are the ferry terminals and the casinos, skipped all the sightseeing.

The boats are awesome if you don't have issues with getting sea sick, huge turbo/hydrofoils. Very cheap. Those egg tarts are awesome, I didn't go to get the "lord stows" one, but just the ones hot out of the oven at the casino are really drat good. They are like the egg tarts you get at dim sum, but toasted on the top. Makes them better.

Poker is indeed a little hard if you don't speak mandarin/cantonese or don't have a buddy translator. I can see that you might get paranoid about collusion or whatever, but its an eye opening experience of being the outsider/foreigner. Almost everyone speaks decent english, but at the table they might not be speaking it to you haha. Try to make some friends! Blackjack all uses auto-shufflers, but the rules are really loving good so its close to even if you play the right basic strategy. I did manage to get room/food comped by calling up the venetian ahead of the visit, but its a little weird, they cater to the mainland junket business and operate differently. Your mileage may vary, and my information is pretty old as well.

Edit - oh yah I love that hong kong style milk tea, black tea with condensed milk. I can never seem to get the ratio right, or the right kind of tea here to replicate it. Probably I'm not using near enough condensed milk.

i'd be more worried about soft play, although the soft play is usually to collude against the foreigner. lol.

i love getting hong kong style milk tea and lemon tea, and would go to HK again if the people didn't drive me so crazy. so many people and so many people only looking at their phones not watching where they're going. old ladies trying to cut in front of me for the subway. its changed so much since i first went there over a decade ago when no one there spoke mandarin at all. now almost everyone does.

i wouldn't feel too bad about skipping the sightseeing. there's not much. you have the church ruins, sendo street, a couple other churches and other streets... that's it. the club scene at the beginning of indiana jones and the temple of doom was filmed there, but they tore all the structures down in the 90s. if you're not from macau basically the only reason to go is because of the casinos. and now china is starting to seriously crack down on "overseas" betting, specifically macau. it'll be interesting to see what happens to macau in the next couple of years.

its really odd since my first trips to vegas when i was young was seeing the stardust sign as we walked from circus circus back to whatever cheap motel my parents initially rented for us to stay in. i forgot where it was but it was like a one story motel next to i think a gun shop. its so weird how so much of the business has now gone to the southern end of the strip and the northern end is basically a no go for me.

i'm excited to eventually be able to go back to vegas though.

My two weeks after my 2nd shot is coming up. Looking at the flights to Vegas.... seem normal. But the hotels... wtf? they seem pricier than before the pandemic..? $288 for a regular king room at Planet Hollywood? Was that always the price? I haven't paid for a room in a while though so maybe that is normal?

we were closed for a large portion of summer last year and memorial day is traditionally huge for the strip, so prices are gonna be inflated due to demand, esp with more and more people being vaccinated and wanting to travel, Vegas is a very popular destination for people who have been pent up at home for the last year

I'm planning to take a Vegas trip in a few months. I'm much more interested in tournament poker than cash games. From everything I've read, the Bellagio tends to be the room to go to for this with a few options available at the Aria as well; are there smaller rooms, possibly with SnG style action, that I need to know about?

I have a tough time with live sngs cus the rake is so loving high and even when you win a 9 player game you're supposed to tip an assload on top of that. I guess the play is so bad it *might* still be +ev, and you get to laugh at dudes who minraise with 5bbs and then get all angry and tank/fold when you snap shove over them, but ehhhhh.

Big tournaments running again at the venetian?

Strong Sauce

I've played the ~$100 "tournaments" at the Caesar properties that start at 10 or 12 and have like 2-3 tables worth of players and indeed they are very soft. nobody really understands how to play once the blinds become really big. they'll limp fold or raise fold without AA/KK on the bubble. they'll also gladly chop with 4 left or something where someone has a 2BB type stack. i'm not against chopping these tournaments since its more about time for me but if you're willing to be the "rear end in a top hat" that refuses to chop you can negotiate better equities since other people don't want to bubble out. for me a lot of playing this is figuring out who looks like they're too scared to bubble and hope you can push them around. kinda the same with any other tournament i guess.

also there used to be a lot of smaller buy-in series tournaments over the summer. not sure what they'll do this year but PH had their "Goliath" series tournaments and venetian had some more mid-tier priced tournaments to compete against the WSOP... caesar's palace also had a series but i think they closed their large poker room already.

the Goliath series ones I'm iffy to recommend personally because I think it mixes the worst of the balances between cost and playability but that's only from my memory of playing those for an entire night and not making the money. i also played an aria tournament that had a higher buy-in but only slightly slower blind structure.

it's a matter of what you value more: buy-in, time spent, structure (which you probably won't find anything good under <$550). but i like the quickie tournaments because bust or not it's only going to cost you an afternoon of a weekend vacation. if you're staying longer and have some money i would recommend playing bigger tournaments with slower structures.

Thanks, I don't recall seeing them at Red Rock but that was ~2 years ago. I went off of this list: https://www.onlineunitedstatescasinos.com/las-vegas/games/roulette/single-zero/ which used to have Ellis Island but doesn't anymore. It had like a .25c minimum play, I'll be sad if it's gone. I just hope it's inaccurate due to the past year or so. :( Maybe I'll give Green Valley Ranch a shot, but it's looking like I may need to bite the bullet and do MGM Grand at $25.

Yeah that's what made ellis island so special. They had 3-4 single 0 roulette machines with the 35:1 payout. I used to play at $5 while drinking their $1-$2 pints they brewed there. I found them specifically called out for it on a site and it was a great find.

Norwegian did, the rake was high as poo poo so I didn't play much. But ran into a guy who said play is so bad he pays for his cruises and more. For what that's worth, hah. He was decent though from what I saw, so maybe just a bit of an exaggeration.

They had good rules for blackjack too (in their "high limit" room), but I didn't have the cash on me to play it. And getting a good chunk of money wired to the boat is kinda ridiculous.

Where do you see networked video poker? I think I'd actually prefer that, people play insanely loose and call anything on those. It's all abstracted.

Holiday Inn: Casino is now called Xanadu.. literally just re-opened Yesterday (Friday). No poker tables.

Hilton: Walked into the lobby, Casino is on the left on a "subfloor". Went in, walked around, found the "poker" tables. There were 4-5 guys waiting around. Lady asked me if I wanted to play and I said "sure I have to go get money..."

I go to the ATM, try to pull $1K out and get denied by the ATM saying they don't have that much (pretty sure my limit is $1K). I didn't want to play $2/5 on one bullet so I just leave.

Oh yeah the ATM fee in Aruba is $10 so hopefully your bank refunds your ATM fees.
