Due to Wrestling and plane price related circumstances I am going to be spending 6 days in Vegas at the end of may. I am in need of cheap places to eat. I'll be staying at Planet Hollywood.

I've got bad-ish news for you

The cheapest you're reasonably going to manage if staying on-strip is going to be one of the food courts, a few places have them (Bally's and Flamingo I know do, I'm not sure about Planet Hollywood). I've never done it (yet) but have toyed with getting a whole pizza at Sbarro's and just using my room iron to heat up leftovers if you're really trying to pinch pennies.

Next tier up on pricing would be somewhere like Batista's, which also has the advantage of all-you-can-drink table wine. It's not great Italian but it works. Alternately you can pay $50 to eat at Wicked Spoon--a legit really, really good buffet at the Cosmo--and just try to ride the one meal for a whole day. I've done that before, but my body is accustomed to unhealthy eating habits and rhythms so ymmv

There's also Stage Door, which is right next to Batista's, that is (in)famous for, among other things, $2 hot dogs but it's sketchy as gently caress. Like, 2+ security dudes out front 24/7. I've never set foot inside.

Do the casino-hotels not comp the buffet from your player card any more? I thought that was "a thing" but I haven't ever done it myself.

Caesars properties at the least don't have buffets anymore. And you can always ask for food comps but if you're new to Vegas and don't have any points they're probably gonna be kinda stingy.

You could walk to Ellis Island from PH in 10-15 minutes. They have a good breakfast, and a decent steak as well. And $3 beers.

There's a little shopping mall attached to PH that has stuff like Chipotle in it, not the cheapest to be had but not ruinous either.

I asked a while back if Ellis still had single 0 roulette ahead of my trip and it turns out they do! They have two stand alone video machines and the machines at the bar have single 0 as an option. The bartender asked if I was playing and gave me free beer as long as I was. So you can sit at the bar playing quarter roulette with good odds and get free beer if you want a cheap night. Thanks man, single zero video roulette definitely is my leak.

Someone let me know if they ever run across any of those electronic poker tables anymore. People play so bad on them w/o a dealer to make it feel "real".

I think there's still one in Bally's, if you mean the one that has the video of a dealer.

My hubby has no interest in going to Vegas, but I've always wanted to check it out. Dumb question, but is it a relatively safe trip to do solo? Probably would just stay on the strip and gamble two days or so.

I should caveat this with my trip was almost a year ago (wtf it didn't feel like that long) and also I don't remember if the video machines at the bar were 34:1 or 35:1. But the standalone machines were definitely the old 35:1 payouts I always used. I think the ones at the bar were too but I was already rolling pretty good when I discovered them so my due diligence and memory may have been hazy

Also I'm so glad I went when I did, one of my bucket list items was a fountain view room at the Bellagio. I was able to get it for dirt cheap coming off the pre-delta pandemic and now it's like $800+/night again.

On the strip feels perfectly safe 24/7 to me. Idk actual crime statistics but wandering off of the strip at night can feel a bit sketchy, probably more if you're a woman by yourself. I didn't particularly enjoy walking back to Ellis (1-2 blocks off strip) at 3am by myself and I don't think my wife would have done it by herself. During the day is ok I think, you'll see plenty of other people venturing out from the strip.

Yeah make sure you're wearing comfortable, well supported footwear too. It's crazy how much distance you can cover without realizing it. One day on the strip our phones logged 16 miles and then 11 miles the next day after we said we'd "take it easy" following that. That was only from walking around casinos on the strip. I was wearing flip flops and my wife had on sandals and our feet were bleeding at the end of it. She actually has permanent scars from how bad the sandal strap cut in to her, it was pretty gnarly.

gently caress I had to go back and double check. It really was 16 miles in a day lmao. We ended up like $600 ahead though so it was an excellent bender

Oh yeah and if you eat anything like I do on holiday the extra steps are great. If you have time for it it's a great city for just walking, you just have to plan ahead around things like crossing the street.

Not super close to (the current) Planet Hollywood but go to Bagelmania if you can, good breakfast or lunch. Also know I am incredibly jealous.

It's not an ideal cheap eats location but all of the YouTubers who write about LV regularly have a video on the subject.

I think Treasure Island's is free (I think it's meant as a main selling point, it sure seemed to come up a lot in copy) and I feel like Planet Hollywood might have a free option, but it may have recently been withdrawn. This all comes from osmosis here, didn't have a car myself.

Asked this in the travel and tourism LV thread, but just wondered where a good <$100 poker tournament on OR just off the strip is on a Monday to Thursday afternoon/evening? Sahara at moment looking best bet.

It just don't stop.

I mean, nowhere is a <$100 daily going to be "good" but most rooms probably have them (especially smaller rooms that aren't the big stops like Bellagio/Caesars/Aria/Venetian). Flamingo had one last time I was there (which, granted, was in 2018).

If you have the Bravo app, you should be able to see places' schedules without having to do too much digging around on websites.

I know no one's going to the Twin Cities for gambling, but I went to the Running Aces Casino and would recommend it. It's all table games, horse racing and live video table games. The dealers were friendly, the floor was smoke free and pushes in Pai Gow didn't lose you any money.

My GF occasionally bugs me to go on a cruise, which I think I’d be more open to doing if there was live poker on board. Do any of the cruise lines have that these days? Most of what I’ve found doing cursory searches seems like at best you all sit at a table and boop at networked video poker screens and pay an insane rake.

I went on a cruise for the first time, and played poker for the first time there. I have played some online poker and watched it on tv all the time, but I am not good.

There was only one table at night and sometimes the wait was for an hour.

I played two hours for two nights and made like $800 ($1-$3 blinds, started with $300). Mind you again, I AM NOT GOOD. I went to AC and just came back from Vegas (each first times) and comparing the two, the cruise had a lot of retired people just throwing away money. Really terrible players who want a break from their families, and a lot more really drunk players. I dont really recall anyone even drinking the brief time I played in vegas (not a lot).

I dont really know the ethics of such but there was one player on a wheelchair hooked up to an air machine, and the nicer players had to constantly tell him to protect his hand as we could clearly see it. I feel like I am just chasing the dragon since the cruise, pr maybe I should know when to call it quits (i always go up, then kind tilted)

Speaking of my first trip to Vegas, it seemed like all the blackjack tables were 5:6 payouts for blackjack instead of 2:3, lame. Didnt play free bet but it does seem interesting, and i will have to return next month for a conference.

I'm heading to Vegas with the wife for our anniversary in about two weeks. Anything absolutely strange I should keep my eyes out for?

The wife is content to feed a penny at a time into a slot machine, hoping I can get her on the craps or roulette table at some point. I there a better game to get her into or should she stick with more basic bets on craps/roulette? She doesn't admit it, but she hates anything with cards.

Yeah playing Roulette and Craps sounds good to me, Roulette is nice because it doesn't matter where you throw your money on the table, everything you can bet on has the same house edge.. Craps obviously better with regards to house edge but much like Roulette it can chew through a bankroll pretty quickly.. I would avoid the Big 6 wheel cause the house edge on it is outrageous.

Can't really think of very many other common Casino games that don't involve cards off the top of my head but maybe there is one that's slipping my mind..

If you want a couple suggestions for card games that someone can play in the Casino without memorizing any strategy, Baccarat and 3 card poker are solid picks. The version of Baccarat that is played in most Vegas casinos is actually mini-baccarat where unlike in James Bond the people betting at the table don't have to make any decisions and everything is done by the dealer. You are basically betting on the result of a coin flip, where either the "banker" or the "player" wins the hand. I bring this game up because it has a very minimal house edge and requires nothing from the player, but it's boring as hell (in my opinion) to play and typically has a higher table minimum bet than most other games in the Casino.

3 card poker has a worse house edge (more similar to Roulette) but it has a nice combination of a one line basic strategy (if you have a better hand than Q-6-4 you play, otherwise you fold), some nice upside of potentially winning up to 40-1 on your bet if you play the pair plus wager, and lower table minimums more comparable to blackjack.

I guess with regards to highlights not commonly known about or on the internet, that would depend on how much digging you've done on the internet! I'm sure the Area 15 probably came up on al ot of internet lists but for what it's worth I've heard it highly recommended by some people who have been to Vegas.. it only opened in the last couple years so it wasn't around when I was last down there pre-Covid and I'm checking it out when I'm down there in November.

I... uh... may have done "extensive" research since we started planning this trip at the beginning of the year and needed to figure out what hotel to stay at. At this point I am looking at google maps and zooming in on random buildings as I have exhausted youtube and website content.

Also, holy crap are vegas review sites/videos garbage. Many of these reviewers are either hell bent on saving every possible penny or are willing to drop tens of thousands, never an inbetween. On top of that, they rarely share the actual date of the visit, so I have no clue if it is stale content or not.

drat I should be asking you for advice then lol, you can give me the scouting report for when I head down to Vegas in November :)

I agree with you about the youtube videos lol.. alot of them are along the lines of "you can get a $5.00 breakfast at this one restaurant at the Paris Hotel, but be prepared to get there before 7:00 am and wait in line for an hour". I'm just not willing to waste my time to do a lot of these Vegas hacks but I don't want to get ripped off either lol.
