YEE HAW AND GADZOOKS Y'ALL ITS TIME FOR NASCAR AGAIN!
Congrats to last year's champ Chase "MAGA 2020" Elliott

Lots of changes this year to the schedule including ROAD COURSES (!!!) and LOTS OF STUPID poo poo (OF COURSE!)

other notes:
new car next year (allegedly)
kyle larson's permanent ban was actually just for like 7 months
kyle busch won the clash when chase elliott wrecked ryan blaney in the final chicane

edit: oh woops the schedule was wrong

we were talking in discord about how dumb the duel is so here's my idea to set the 500:
Top 2 Qualifiers are the pole sitters
Top 10 in each of the twin races get in
The 16 Chase drivers from last year get a provisional so they get in
That leaves 2+ spots available (depending on where the 16 Chase drivers end up) that you hand out on time OR you can do something fun and have the past champions provisional and a diversity spot for a woman/non-white dude/minority-owned team to get a freebie if they miss the race otherwise

edit: the fun part is, aside from the twin races you can do all this for the rest of the year too. The Chasers get their Free Pass and everyone else actually has to work to make the race.

Honestly it's not any worse than what they're doing now, but lol can you imagine the pearl clutching if they did an "affirmative action" provisional?

Yeah it'd rule! Especially when you get someone pulling an Elizabeth Warren

I like it, but what happens if the Chase drivers finish in the top 10? Just keep going down the previous year's standings until you get an equal number?

And dear God, somebody would run Natalie Decker in a car with a guaranteed spot and it would be ugly.

the top 10 thing is first, the 16 chase guys just get a free pass *if* they finish out of the top 10, everyone left is time

The real fun is going to be 25 races from now when McDowell is 24th in points but going to the playoffs and either Brad or Joey didn't get a win and had a marginal season and will miss the playoffs by like 3 points.

That'd rule, actually. gently caress Joey Logano

Yeah for sure, if you're fighting for the last spot there is a very good chance even if you get it you're probably going out really quickly but I can just imagine the anger when you see McDowell pass you by on the leaderboard because he was in the right place at the right time at Daytona and you've been struggling all year but still miles better than that team. Plus I'd bet at this point there have to be contract bonus for making the chase and/or each round of the chase that are lucrative enough even if you aren't going to sniff a championship.

you know maybe Brad should've thought about that before wrecking his team mate going into 3

Race takes like 4 hours, Practice (even Happy Hour) takes hours and hours of work, as does Qualifying. Limiting the time teams are piled up on top of each other in a pandemic is good, actually. Kinda wish they didn't race at all or do it over the internet but MAMMON DESIRES

yeah honestly. Also reminder that the 23 is basically the 5th Gibbs car so it should be graded on a bigass curve: like around the same tier as Wood Brothers or Petty.

Not sure everyone figured that one out.

The addition of the Chicago street course to iRacing leads to the next question: Is this in preparation for a street course on the actual NASCAR Cup Series schedule? "The impetus right now is solely that virtual event and bringing that to life on June 2," said NASCAR Vice President Ben Kennedy, who handles NASCAR’s scheduling initiatives. "That’s been our focus in the near-term. "If there is an opportunity to explore different types of venues or new markets in the future, I think there are certainly a ton of options out there, whether it’s Chicago or other markets."

NASCAR is working with The Specialized Marketing Group Inc. in Chicago on its potential street race, and TSMGI helped with the development of this course. They worked with the city to momentarily shut down streets on the circuit last fall to allow for a moving scanning truck that collected data for iRacing, which NASCAR has used to create prototypes of tracks to determine what works best. For instance, iRacing created the half-mile track that NASCAR will convert Auto Club Speedway into after the 2022 Cup race. It also created the chicane coming out of Turn 4 on the Daytona road course.

It would seem that all this work has to be for more than an iRacing event. It should give NASCAR and TSMGI a foundation for additional talks with city leaders about a potential race. This shows that NASCAR has done its homework from a competition standpoint and shows why it would want to use certain streets. The imagery and research certainly could help convince skeptical government officials of what the event could look like.

"On behalf of the City of Chicago, I am thrilled to work with NASCAR and iRacing to showcase our great city to NASCAR fans who will be watching this cutting-edge event from around the country," Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot said in a statement.

The Chicago Sports Commission also was involved in working with NASCAR and TSMGI. CSC Executive Director Kara Bachman said in a statement that the virtual race is a "huge milestone" for the group.

"CSC and its partners, such as TSMGI who has been integral in securing this event, have long awaited the opportunity to collaborate with NASCAR," Bachman said. "The iRacing Pro Invitational Series is the perfect virtual launching pad and a testament to NASCAR’s innovation."

Kennedy was noncommittal on whether a Cup race on the streets of Chicago could be a reality in 2022.

"Still a ton of work to do on the 2022 schedule," Kennedy said. "It will be a while before we start announcing anything there. We are in the preliminary stages of that, but more to come sometime this summer."
