The movies. Film. Cinema. One of the most powerful and globally regarded artistic mediums of our time. They can make you cry, pump your first, or even want to barf all over yourself. But what if there’s something deeper behind every one of those 24 frames a second we let into our hearts?

Ideology. Conservatives say Hollywood is dominated by liberal ideology, liberals pump their fist and cheer as the CIA agent drone strikes proletariat revolutionaries in defense of an ethnostate’s monarchy in the climax of Black Panther.

But what is it really, that gets everyone so excited to pay 30 hard earned dollars for giant tubs of sugar water and gut-melting popcorn? As the intellectual vanguard of C-SPAM, that is what our mission will be to discover. Has an Illuminati cult brainwashed our children, or are we simply bearing witness to the mounting contradictions of capitalism projecting its own weakness?

Let’s talk about Deterrence (2000.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvRjOMRM9f0

President Not-Bernie nukes Baghdad after baiting and switching Uday Hussein to launch a bunch of fake nuclear missiles sold to them by France, and then mocks them on television. The two PoC characters are the only ones against nuking Baghdad, and are treated as cowards going into hysterics.

Establishment liberal professors apparently show this movie in college as if President Not-Bernie is the good guy in this scenario, even though it’s literally fascist propaganda justifying nuclear genocide. Also after committing a crime against humanity, President Not-Bernie surrenders the election to his opponent, Donald Trump.

What are the most C-SPAM films of all time?

"The Peacemaker" from 1997 had a villain whose family was killed in the Yugoslav Wars, and then he blames no country in particular for the having supplied every side in the war with arms, and decides that the problem is the UN, so he goes off to nuke the UN headquarters in New York.

To be clear, it's very lib-brained to assume that the conflict in the former Yugoslavia was just too complex for people to really understand*, excusing the film from ever really having to commit to any kind of explanation, and then especially when the blame is then directed to the UN of all organizations, when anyone politically motivated enough to engage in the kind of act portrayed in the film would almost certainly be capable of drawing a direct line back to the US specifically (though I suppose in this case nuking New York would happen all the same, though perhaps with a different blast epicenter).

To a lesser degree, The Peacemaker also engages in a lot of post-Soviet Russia stereotypes, assuming that the country is one big wasteland run by the Russian mob and all Russians are easily bribed.

The director of the film went on to make the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic "On the Basis of Sex" some 21 years later.

___

* there's a throwaway line in Behind Enemy Lines that also does this, though BEL for the most part instead does manage to clearly identify a villain in the form a Slobodan Milosevic-type character. Perhaps that's another post for this thread.

Rollerball[ (1975)

A whole lot of movies do the corporate state dystopia thing but Rollerball is distinct in that it showcases the impact of the corporate state on the people at the very top.

The main character is a dedicated Rollerballer, Jonathan E, and he just wants to rollerball because he is the Tom Brady of Rollerball

he gets asked to leave the game because his popularity and prowess are perceived as a threat by the corporate directorate.

this sets off a chain of events where the directorate attempts to make the rules of the game more and more barbaric and offer Jonathan greater and greater luxuries to abandon his career in order to squeeze him out.

The liaison for the corporate system in the film, Mr Bartholomew,

https://i.imgur.com/9jb2dzD.mp4

straightforwardly describes why jonathan is rocking the boat, describing the game as a purposeful meat grinder, something no one was supposed to be good at, that just chewed people up like nothing for the sheer spectacle of it. Jonathan E begins to wonder how the world got to this sorry state in the first place and goes on a quest for information and discovers that the consolidation of data centers has allowed information to be tightly controlled by the corporate state.

https://i.imgur.com/E1GTYTt.mp4

So what does he do?

He loving rollerballs, that's what.

https://i.imgur.com/YBGhMvk.mp4

The film also depicts the psychotic decadence of the ruling class in a way that tracks very smartly with our lived experience with people of wealth

the dreams of the delighting void

Zardoz 1974

Zardoz is about owning the libs.

Spoilers will follow.

This film has a reputation for being a "lol look at this weird movie" kind of film but that is only because of imaginative superficial things which are actually explained incredibly well in the narrative.

Ponytail Sean Connery, in his famous outfit, is a Brutal Exterminator riding horseback through the wastes culling the human population on behalf of his god, Zardoz, which is a giant stone head which pukes guns and makes derisive comments about procreation

Zed stows away on Zardoz one day because, as we later learn, the Exterminators have become suspicious of their god after he orders them to farm instead of just ranging around killing people

Inside the giant head, Zed discovers a man and kills him, that man, we later learn is a part of a community which is isolated from the harsh conditions of the wastelands, in domes of pristine beauty, where they live lives of ease and luxury. This man that Zed kills was tasked with constructing a social scheme to control the human population of the outlands and had a flair for the dramatic so he invented this garish religion angle to gussy up the task of administering a slow moving genocide

the bubble communities, Vortexes, we come to find, were created by the liberal elite as the apocalypse unfolded, they entrusted the maintenance of the basic aspects of society to an AI called the tabernacle which also used a genetic/conciousness uploading scheme to make everyone functionally immortal (that is why they are called Eternals) and gave themselves over to the pursuit of the great questions of the universe while conditions outside the vortexes deteriorated.

here is a brief history

https://i.imgur.com/pwtDduc.mp4

and continuing

https://i.imgur.com/tAL2aPm.mp4

the concept above, that the Eternals tried and failed to answer the great questions of the universe, is critical to the film and very poignant, that there is an epistemological horizon which can never be approached, questions which can never be answered. The whole entire Vortex project, the creation of the Eternals, was a faulty premise which has created an absolutely insane society which is every caricature of a bourgeois hippy commune/polycule you can imagine smashed together with the smarmy veneer of bourgeois academia slathered all over it.

A sizeable portion of the population is seething with resentment and craves death. Many have become "apathetic" a sort of dissociative catatonic hebephrenic state and that is why they had to grow bread in the outlands in the first place. a decadent society shot through with social pathologies

https://i.imgur.com/mCdqpSP.mp4

We later come to find that Zed was genetically engineered from the inside in order to bring down the vortex system by the man behind Zardoz himself, kwisatz haderach style

This exchange near the end earns deep respect from me as it plants the film securely on a dialectical materialist footing

https://i.imgur.com/DwrNlAm.mp4

also this film has the sickest burn on lib NIMBY attitude right here

"I always voted against forced farming"

"You eat the bread"

Rollerball has already been discussed, and eloquently

Soylent Green is fantastic, Charlton Heston plays a detective with nitecrew sensibilities and alcoholism, married with daycrew's dogged work ethic. The story is antiestablishment, anticorporate, anticop (Heston realizes he's not one of the good guys eventually), ecoconscious, and focuses on the plight of the proletariat.

Eat the rich? Nah, the shark eats you.

wildcard pick: Behind Enemy Lines (2001)

Owen Wilson stars in this 2 hour long misbegotten military recruitment endeavor. With irrepressibly American verve, he flies over North Korea and they have the temerity to shoot him down. He cinematically eludes and outsmarts the entire North Korean military, except for one badass Korean special forces sniper who murders his way through his own countrymen to capture the war criminal pilot who had no business violating his country's sovereignty. This movie could have been salvaged by making the Korean murderer the protagonist. At any rate, Gene Hackman is a crusty general tasked with recovering the wayward pilot, and no scruples will be observed in the undertaking. Hackman clearly doesn't give a poo poo about the film, barking out stinkers like "the American people want their pilot back" with no real commitment to the thankless role. At any rate, the movie ends with the US blowing up the Northern side of the DMZ in an undeclared act of war, and everyone cheered. Notably, this movie was made before the 9/11 attacks, so the post-towers collapse brain-brokenness of the American public cannot excuse this atrocious film.

I like it a lot but it's a deliberately slow movie. My wife thought it could've been paced better and I don't entirely disagree but it is also a hollywood film evangelizing a socialist revolutionary so for that aspect it's really interesting to watch.
I'm interested to see how the discourse plays out around it because it's does not pull the punches that all the cops/Hoover were racist murderous assholes (and are)

So like from a filmmaking stand-point, as a first feature film for King it's got some growing pains but I think as the content and the strangeness of it being made at all elevate it into something that's going to be very interesting.

when i watched the movie, i was pleasantly surprised that howard beale is actually a side character to the main story which is about these conniving, ratings-obsessed producers. and i didn't find beale sympathetic at all, more of an idealist and a fool, really. which is populism, i guess. he more or less bumbles into disrupting things by accident, and i've noticed that i see less of the "i'm mad as hell" speech circulating around now compared to a few years ago, and more of the speech by "god" explaining how things actually are, which probably means more people have actually sat down and watched the movie.

it's rare how the movie shows the contrast between the mainline CPUSA and the ultra-leftist maoist sects at the time. there's another scene with laureen hobbs in the background where she's [very... carefully] talking about building a popular front of all the democratic forces which contrasts with the armed adventurism of the ecumenicals. it's like, hey, the screenwriter has actually spent some time reading about this stuff. also part of the "joke" here is that hobbs is actually more ruthless than the maoists (who end up being another group of dupes and tools), flipping things around. she's the only character i found sympathetic. also she makes sure to lawyer up before doing anything around these loving producers.
