Thinking of buying a photon mono se - i guess just for printing minis the the mono x is overkill because it’s just capable of printing bigger things and not higher quality, right?

also, how useful or necessary is a wash and cure machine? sorry if these are stupid newbie questions

I bought a $50 ultrasonic cleaner off harbor freight and that works great for me. If you put the print in a ziploc bag then you only have to dispose of the liquid in the bag instead of the whole tank.

And for curing yeah I bought some UV led strips and a cheap aluminum pan and made a curing chamber. It’s not as good as leaving them in the sun for a bit but it gets the job done.

i live in ireland so literally anything is going to be a more reliable option than leaving them in the sun for a bit lol

Fair enough, I’m in New York so its not cloudy 300 days of the year. To be fair though it’s not so much about sunlight as it is about UV, which comes through even on cloudy days. If you have some time before you get a curing set up that would work fine.
oh cool - I guess my greenhouse would be a decent place to leave minis to cure them?

i just got my printer. test file getting churned out as i type!

so i'm looking through myminifactory for some models to print and, uh, i guess 3d modellers sure are horny :stare:

i bet that no-one has made a dumber printing mistake than i did over the weekend

went to clean out the vat, so i got a funnel and the original bottle to pour the excess, thought to myself “hmm it’s a bit dark here in the garage” and took it outside to pour it instead :cripes:

fortunately i noticed the skin forming almost straight away so i got it back indoors and was able to hack the hardened top layer off easy enough. god drat i am a dummy

oh yeah i got a sexy necromancer ready to go dont worry

Here is my first print - a Viking bust. I guess I did kind of a lovely job cleaning the torso before curing because there’s white residue along the bottom. Is this salvageable? Will the point of a hobby knife remove the worst of it? Does it mostly get obscured by primer?

yeah i scrubbed them with ipa, then they spent some time in an ultrasonic cleaner, then a final scrub with some warm soapy water. i probably did a shoddy job with the ipa and then the other steps didn’t do much where i missed

What percent alcohol were you using? One of my big reasons to switch to simple green was I couldn't find high enough percent with everyone buying it up last year to disinfect with.
99. i think it was definitely a lovely cleaning job on the torso because all of the other parts of the model are pristine

is there a rule of thumb for the relationship between exposure time and layer thickness? the factory default settings work pretty well (anycubic photon mono se) but i get a little bit of the “topography” look which is more noticeable as i paint the model.

i tried printing a test piece just by reducing layer thickness from 0.05 to 0.02, and it came out really soft and blurry in the details. my first guess is i overexposed the layers. does that sound right?

yes my first proper print was a pretty huge bust (not sure the exact scale but the head alone is the same size as a space marine) and it took 3 three-hour prints, which i gather is pretty drat quick for a big model

i got the anycubic compostable resin and im kinda nervous that it’s an extremely loose definition of compostable that will end up with my homegrown vegetables killing me

Is it good for printing? I might switch to it next time I run out, if it's any good, since less incredibly weird chemicals can't be all bad.
i haven’t any complaints! no real frame of reference but i can post a couple of close-ups of the bust i printed

I think the knuckles, fingernails, wrist tendons all show off a decent finish on it. ignore the half-finished paint job please ive only blocked in rough colours

I'm always sceptical when when something is being marketed as "just as good!", but that looks great!
It costs twice as much as regular anycubic resin so I guess that’s where the tradeoff is!

recommendations for stl sources?

i've used myminifactory pretty much exclusively so far and it has a pretty great selection, but if there's a couple of other sites, maybe even a resource that has a big list of artists' patreons, i'd love to hear them.

Thanks!

i guess my problem is i don’t know what i want until i see it lol. painted a lot of 40k so probably not so much grimdark sci fi, something cyberpunk or steampunk or any of the -punk aesthetics would probably be cool. fantasy stuff would be cool too

i really like this kind of thing. idk if you would call it cyberpunk but some dystopian bullshit. there’s a couple of models in that line that i really like

i would pay a dollar or two a month for a patreon that scoured the rest of patreon and kickstarter for cool 3d print projects

yet to try it but some people swear by dunking the uncured model in hot water for a few seconds, then removing the supports, then doing your wash and cure afterwards

how badly am i loving up by just using the anycubic slicer? I Guess it’s fine-ish since i just use the presupported versions of models, but I should probably stop because they all overdo it to an insane degree

Yeah myminifactory is in theory so much of a better platform for mini patronage, it should be a lot easier for creators to come up with business models that combine subs and one-off purchases (especially for new subs who want to buy old content) this way. I know you can get discount codes and such but having it all baked in to one platform should be a lot smoother.

jesus WEP

Is there a ballpark figure for the relationship between layer depth and exposure time? Like if you drop layer depth by 40% from 0.05 to 0.03, should you drop exposure time by a similar percentage? Or are there too many variables to even give a rough guide?

jesus WEP

they maybe meant mono se

e: although $200 for the se would be kind of an insane deal i guess
