As I mention in the previous thread but what’s the best advice for fighting Shido ?

I have been using Melchizedek but also have Ananta.
Now I was a moron and didn’t Max out many of my confidants and don’t really have access to other Personas atm as I’m only level 60.

I nearly had Shido beat earlier, but I didn’t guard during his last form and he insta-killed me when he charged up. Still, just getting to that point was a 20-30min grind. So the insta-kill was really deflating.

Did you max out the Strength confidant? If so, Abaddon is super helpful in the fight for debuffing the boss and dealing damage. If you haven't maxed Strength, it takes no in-game time and as long as you have the money to do some fusion you can do it all at once. Debilitate makes a huge difference.

IIRC he uses a lot of physical attacks early that you can reflect with Tetrakarn and then magical attacks later that you can reflect with Makarakarn.

Yea Reddit said the same thing, but I...have been lax on maxing out confidants.

Anyway I beat him by having Morgana and Makoto focus on healing and then laying into him with me and Ryuji. I made *sure* to pay close attention to when he was amping up for a big attack and guard when needed. Even then, it was close at times!

Anyway Palace finished and now comes my favorite part - free time to do whatever I want! Gonna focus on maxing out as many of my Confidants as I can since it’s late November and the end game is clearly coming...

I think there are still improvements that can be done, graphics wise, but nothing revolutionary.

Keeping in mind that Persona 5 was developed first and foremost as a PS3 game, and only ported to PS4.

For one, you could have much larger "hub" areas on a PS5 powered Persona 5. Imagine the Shibuya crossing rendered at near-scale with the enormous crowds to boot.

Also of course I would be ecstatic to play a Persona game with "Anime/Manga Graphics" rendered at 4K and 60fps. In addition to the fancier lighting (ray-tracing), shadows, animations as previously mentioned by Harrow.

Hell, I would pay $$$$ for a Persona 5 remaster that had the artwork re-done and upscaled to 4K and 60fps.

Considering Atlus’s track record with LGBTQ characters I don’t think I could trust them to handle a Gay relationship.

At least now. Maybe they can have a change of heart and write some good LGBTQ characters for Persona 6!

I mean, FF7 Remake took the Honey Bee scene which was originally a transgender/cross dress gag and turned it into a really amazing dance/music number and genuinely emotionally up-lifting scene about breaking gender norms.

Also I stick by Makato because technically she ain't a cop yet and she's an idealistic teenager, so I pretend the antagonist can change her heart at some point. Also I'm totally helping a sketchy former-Yakuza member with his faux weapons-front store do shady poo poo and working at a seedy bar at night so at some point we're gonna have to square that.

Sojiro is my favorite character in Persona 5 and I don’t think that’s a hot take?

He is a Good Man who has done his fair share of gently caress ups and just doesn’t want the kids to make his same mistakes.

Like when you first meet him he acts cold and it is initially implied he’s a womanizer but instead it turns out that’s all a front he puts up and instead he spends most of his time caring for Futaba and just being alone. :smith:

In my mind the canon scenario for adult Phantom Thieves is :

Ryuji/Morgana/Joker all three take over Leblanc and then no one questions why Ryuji/Joker share the loft upstairs.
Mishima seems to visit daily to write on his blog.

Makoto becomes disillusioned in the Police Academy and instead goes to Law School and works to take down corrupt cops/politicians

Ann becomes a famous model. Ends up with Shiho.

Futaba works as a security engineer

Haru makes her fathers business successful and opens a bunch of organic fast-casual food concepts

Yusuke creates a famous piece of artwork, gets known in Japan. But finds his true calling in teaching. Becomes Madarame but not evil.

Makoto wanting to become a cop is one of the more baffling things to me in Persona 5. I know that Persona 5 is ultimately a pretty idealistic game and the setting includes the concept of the mythical Good Cop (Dojima, Makoto's dad, Zenkichi) but I always thought becoming a defense attorney or, like Solaris suggested, a lawyer who goes after cooked cops would be a better way to achieve her stated goals.

I can't really hold it against her as a character because, well, see above about Persona 5's naive idealism, but I do maybe hold that naive idealism against Persona 5's writers a bit.

I do still like pairing Joker and Makoto, if only because they feel like the two co-leads of the story and Makoto gets some of the most non-social link development out of the whole party. For me it feels right narratively. Now, if the game would let me date Ryuji or Yusuke, maybe I'd have to reconsider.

Yea this is my thinking. I ended up with Makoto on my play through because “uptight honors student ends up with delinquent and they learn from each other” just feels right. Also of all the romance options she has the least amount of baggage.

I think she just wants to be a cop because she’s a idealistic 16 year old and her father was a cop and she thinks that’s the best way to reform the system.

But she will quickly learn ACAB and go on to law school instead because that just makes the most sense for her character growth.

Also yes Joker totally should be with Ryuji or Yusuke. Especially Ryuji.

I feel like some of Morgana’s wannabe “noble knight” does come across in the English translation, but it’s spotty. Also he still very much has an...obsession with Ann.

Do most people play with the English VA? Typically if I watch Anime I notice I tend to prefer the Japanese VA with English subtitles and I’m playing Persona 5 the same way. Also the game is supposed to take place in Japan so having the characters speak Japanese just seems natural to me.

Now I don’t speak or understand Japanese at all, but As Endorph said with the Japanese VA Morgana seems to be a bit more aggressive when compared to the English VA. At least , from comparing YouTube videos.

In general though I really enjoy the Japanese voice acting. Based on the tone at least, it feels spot on for the characters they are portraying. In particular I like Yusukes VA.

Well I did it, I got to the ending credits which means after 133 hours I completed all of P5R.

It was far from a perfect playthough, given my inexperience with JRPGs and the Persona series in general. I missed out on maxing out a fair deal of confidants, and my Persona fusions were...less than stellar.

But I don't care, this game turned out to be an all-time great gaming experience for me. For two months this was literally the only game I was playing. I keep thinking about what kept bringing me back, was it the slick style, the incredible music, the multilayered battle system, palace exploration?

It was the characters and the writing. Seriously, this game has the best characterizations and writing I've ever seen in a video game since....Mass Effect 2, Witcher 3? And I think it even tops those games.

Every character felt like a real person to me, and I wanted to get to know all of them more, even after the credits. There were times I would force myself to turn off the game because I was getting too into it, and had to tend to my own reality (a major theme in the game itself!).

A part of me feels a little sad now that it is all over. As for the writing, goddamn. Some scenes could be an absolute emotional gut-punch, and other bits of dialogue had me literally laughing out loud.

I came into this game thinking it would be the RPG battles and palace explorations that would be the meat and potatoes, but for me it was the slice-of-life stuff and characters that kept me coming back. Certain palaces I wanted to finish sooner, just so I could go back to hanging out with my Phantom Thieves friends.

I don't think I will ever have it in me to do a NG+. However I cannot wait to play Persona 4G and then Strikers.

But I'm going to take a week or three off before I start P4G. Catch up on some of the other games and TV shows, because now I know, once you start a Persona game, it will be the only thing I will play until completion

Ok I lied in my post about waiting "weeks" before starting P4G...I couldn't even make it 24 hours. I started playing something else (Control) but found my mind wandering and wanting something more upbeat, more...Persona. Said "gently caress it why not" and loaded up P4G on Steam.

I'm an hour in and the first murder has occurred but so far it seems promising. I like the music, it is definitely more J-pop and boppy but I think it fits well with the time frame of the game (mid-2000s?) and I find myself nodding along to it.

The graphics are surprisingly good, especially the character models. I can't believe this was originally a PS2 game. The hub areas are of course smaller because of it's PS2 roots, but it doesn't seem to hold the game back because it is suppose to take place in a small town. The sound seems a little muted compared to how crisp it was in PS5, but again, I think that's because of it's PS2 roots.

Otherwise, so far, it feels like more Persona! And this alone makes me happy.

Ok so I made it to the first dungeon in P4G and holy moly are the shadows a lot tougher than they were in P5R.

On normal in P5R I died under a dozen times my entire 135 hour playthrough. Already in P4G (on normal) I’ve seen the “game over” screen five times. In particular one enemy has a nasty finishing move where it explodes before it does and, because you don’t get a chance to guard, can easily wipe the whole party out.

I read a few guides and the advice seems to be the old school JRPG standard of “gotta grind” with a recommended level of 15(!) for the fight against shadow yukiko (I am currently level 7)

Besides grinding, anyone got tips for the early game? I do love the shuffle card system way better than the negotiations from Persona 5, so getting additional Persona’s to use for fusions seems easier.

I think I was probably level 10 or 11 for that boss on my latest playthrough, something like that. One thing that really helps on that boss is fusing a persona with Media.

Also, the boss is going to use a ton of fire attacks, and that's Chie's weakness, so remember that if a character is guarding, they cover their weakness. I don't remember exactly what the boss's pattern is but I think its big fire attack is predictable so you can have Chie guard when it's coming up.

One nice thing in Golden's PC version is that you can change the difficulty at any time on a pretty granular level. You can even turn up EXP/money gain without adjusting the rest of the difficulty if you've gotten to the end of the dungeon and feel like you need a couple more levels before you take on the boss or things like that.

wow that is a game-changer. Yea I'm outside the room where I assume the main boss is, as the game is telling me "hey there is something big and bad behind this door are you ready??"

I'll turn up the EXP and grind a little. Not to level 15, but probably closer to 10-12.

One habit I got into from P5 is diving into dungeons as soon as they become available, so I got plenty of time and I may even leave and buy more items/ fuse some Personas before I take on the final boss.

In general I think that's true about pretty much everything with Shido. The plot element that all of the villainous Palace rulers be part of the same grand conspiracy is really weird and unfortunately undermines a lot of P5's "changing society" angle. You're not so much changing society as dismantling one very specific conspiracy.

It doesn't help that Shido is an absolute vacuum of personality and is one of the least-compelling villains in the series. "Rivers in the Desert" deserves a better villain to be the main boss it plays for.

Ultimately I think that's why I love Royal as much as I do. The whole Shido arc is a big letdown, but I thought Maruki more than made up for it.

Oh yea if I had just played vanilla P5 I would have felt...underwhelmed by the ending.

As it stands, the Kasumi/Sumire and Maruki arcs were so goddamn good, and it felt like the ending that Atlus really wanted from the start. Just nicely ties up every thread for every character, the metaverse at large, ect.

As much as I criticize it, Persona 5 (especially Royal) is still my favorite Persona game. My favorite games aren't my favorites because of any objective measure. For example, I think Persona 5's plot has a lot of flaws that Persona 3 and 4's plots don't, if I'm looking at it as objectively as I can. But the overall experience of playing P5R--the characters, the gameplay, the plot elements that do work, the overall vibe of the game--is just one of my favorite gaming experiences I've ever had, even the second time through. It's a game that's really close to my heart.

It's like how I can write--and have written--essay-length posts about everything I think Breath of the Wild does poorly, but it's still in the running for my favorite Zelda game. Same for Final Fantasy IX and XII.

I was going to wait until I actually beat Shadow Yukiko before bringing this up, but heck this is a good time.

So far I am really enjoying Persona 4G, but already it's painfully obvious to me that everything else is just done to perfection in 5. Like Atlus took everything they had learned from the previous games, and created the smoothest, most polished, stylish, and one of the most engrossing gaming experiences I have ever had the pleasure of playing.

One big standout is the design of the palaces. I can compare and contrast two right now Yukiko's castle and Kamoshida's castle.

Yukiko's castle is basically mementos. It's a long corridor that is randomly generated. There are a few side rooms with treasure chests. And a handful of shadows on each floor that you basically have to fight. Exploring it is not particularly interesting, but it also isn't very long so that works in it's favor.

Kamoshida's castle, meanwhile, is absolutely beautifully crafted and was what told me I was in for a treat. It is also shockingly deep, it took me two solid nights of play-time to beat it. But everything from the look of the different floors, the puzzles, , the atmosphere, and the sheer scale of the place is masterfully done. I also love the bare-bone stealth system, because it meant I didn't have to fight that OP shadow lurking about just to get back to a safe room, which is a massive QoL improvement.
I'm really glad Atlus decided to leave the randomly generated dungeon for mementos and have each individual Palace hand-created in P5.

I am curious about this too. I had thought in Japanese culture when talking to someone you use lastname+honorific unless they were really close to you. This is especially important if someone is higher "rank" socially. However in the game the characters will also call themselves by firstname + honorific. There is a whole conversation when Makoto joins about whether they should keep referring to her as "Makoto-Senpai" until she urges them to drop the honorifics.

This isn't a translation issue either as I was playing with Japanese VA and I noticed too a lot of times the Japanese VA saying a character's last name, but in the English subtitles it would use the first name.
