I WAS THERE
WHEN CODY RHODES
FINISHED THE STORY
I only got into wrestling four or five years ago and I was watching Nitro on the Network, and even Bobby in the Blue Bloods was super fun and he immediately stood out to me as a massively talented guy.

So sad to hear about Bobby Eaton. The Midnight Express were one of my favorite tag teams of all time, maybe even my favorite, and a lot of that was due to how crisp Bobby and Stan were in the ring. And of course later on I got to appreciate just how good he was as I learned more about the behind-the-scenes stuff in rasslin' when the Internet came along.

One of my favorite stories about how nice of a guy Bobby Eaton was, and how well-regarded he was in the locker room, was a story Cornette told. They had a six-man tag match in WCW with the Midnights and "Dr. Death" Steve Williams vs. the then-recent incarnation of the Freebirds with Hayes, Gordy, and Jimmy Garvin, and for whatever reason Garvin and Hayes were being total pricks that night and not really working with them and just doing stuff to get themselves over (Gordy didn't, because he was good friends with all of them). At some point Garvin did something to cause Williams to just snap, and he started hitting him with a chair, and every time Garvin would go "gently caress!", Williams would yell back "gently caress WITH ME!" Eventually they got out of the ring, and the Freebirds headed back to the locker room, with the Midnights and Dr. Death following.

When they got back there, Cornette was sure that the poo poo was going to hit the fan, but then Bobby Eaton yelled out "We ain't just out there to fuckin' get you guys over!" And that deflated the situation, because even Garvin and Hayes knew that if they'd done something to piss Bobby Eaton off, then they knew that they had hosed up royally.

RIP "Beautiful" Bobby. A one of a kind dude.

Is Bobby Eaton the reason every top rope legdrop is a [someplace] Jam? 'Cause that's one of my favorite wrestling things, but I'm not sure if it predates him.

Also, look at these two and their fuckin' t-shirts:

the original spooky lady wrestler basically, she was all over the place in the north american scene for a solid 12-15 years and was generally beloved for a mix of being a genuinely nice person, trying hard in the ring and pushing the kind of character youd see women doing. a lot of the admiration was for her swinging for the fences even if it didnt always land iirc

intensely spooky, amazing lady with a scream that will echo throughout wrestling basically forever. she was serious women's wrestling when that was fading for poo poo like the nitro girls and she breathed kayfabe incredibly well. super great with stupid little girls who were intensely excited to meet her, too.

The trail blazer for alt women wrestlers and valets. From her you can draw a direct line to people like Lita, Allison Danger and MsChif up until the modern day with Rhea Ripley, Mercedes Martinez and Abadon. In an era where womens wrestling was a conplete joke and all valets were strictly eye candy she was so radically different it stood out and showed that yeah theres a home for weirdos in wrestling.

Very sad to hear the news about Daffney. I was a fan of hers from back when she was in WCW, snd it's heartbreaking that she couldn't get past whatever issues she was having to know that people truly loved and appreciated her. But unfortunately depression is very powerful like that. :smith: RIP.

Always remember that the former President was dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met by a wide margin

Daffney was really cool in WCW.

A few years after (I think this was probably around 2003 or so) I went to my first independent wrestling show with my mom and brother. I was a super awkward moody teenager at the time, definitely the lowest point of my life from a mental health standpoint. I was in line for snacks and was wearing an Army of Darkness t-shirt. One of the wrestlers came up to me and said it was a cool shirt. I was way too awkward at the time and just kind of grunted in approval, not realizing who it was.

The show went on and, lo and behold, it was Daffney (who I recognized once she got announced) taking on Daizee Haze. I gave up all my teenage pretensions about being "cool" and cheered for Daffney and at the end she shot me a thumbs up.

So thanks for paying a compliment to a weird teenage boy and also helping to build my love of indy pro wrestling.
