"Why were there so many police on X street at 2pm today?" "Is anyone else's power out?" "My neighbor's dog keeps barking at night!" "To the disrespectful teenagers who trashed our lawn:" Just so, so many posts that would be better served in another venue, but apparently when all you have is a single social media app... I stick around because sometimes people post cool pics of the wildlife here.

Nextdoor highlights I saw before I got banned: Someone had seen hummingbirds in their yard and was asking if they were dangerous. Old people playing amateur detective had figured out that the Swisher Sweet cigar wrappers they kept finding on their street were being used by drug crazed teens to roll “blunts”, a type of marijuana cigarette. Apparently a guy was seen jacking off in a creepy van like right across the street from me. Mostly lots and lots of “what was that noise? A gunfight? Gang war?” (It’s fireworks) and red text ALERT! I SAW A DOG! posts in Crime and Safety. Nextdoor really needs to make a whole separate page for people’s obsessive dogspotting.

There is a crime wave in my neighborhood. There's a "crew" of "professional thieves" that targets poorly anchored flags and cheap lawn furniture. They only strike on particularly windy nights. No one has ever seen them or caught them on camera. Pray for us all.

my mom shared that her HOA has a nextdoor group for the shared private dumpster service and some lady joined to complain they don’t empty it enough turns out it wasn’t someone in the HOA, it was a rando across the street who didn’t pay and got in trouble for illegally using the dumpster, which is behind a locked fence. They had a heck of a time explaining the concept of a private dumpster you have to pay for so nextdoor is retried mom HOA drama

Person in a high visibility vest with some sort of electronic machine in his hand is walking down our street looking at everyone's utility meters. They then left in a truck with the utility company logo on the doors. Was this person casing our homes so they will know who to come back and rob? Notified the police and gave them the details. BE CAREFUL! Edit: I got into it with a neighbor who saw a drone overfly her home and land in their neighbors yard before said neighbor went outside to get it. Accused him of somehow spying on her (through the roof). When I pointed out that he apparently hadn't broken any laws from the description, she then accused me of being the 'creepy drone pilot' despite being able to see on my profile I did not in fact live in the house of the owner. That didn't matter to her though. Blackchamber fucked around with this message at 20:22 on Feb 28, 2021 |

I saw a ton of water in the street and was afraid a pipe burst (it happened before when a neighbor drove over a water valve with their truck). Like a normal person I went out and talked to the county employee (socially distanced). He was just purging the fire hydrants. I thanked him and went back inside. I did not report him to Nextdoor.

I've learned that there are very few lost dogs in my neighborhood, but a great many STOLEN DOGS! dog theft is apparently rampant. Rumor is that drifters and tweakers are scooping them up to either resell on the dog black market, use as "bait dogs" in underground dog fighting gangs. You can tell they're stolen because they let them into the yard for just a few minutes and when they came back, they were gone! Fluffy is surely worth great sums of money

The gas company's been coming around doing gas company things. All the old white people are terrified it must be a scam when the man in the gas company vest with the gas company clipboard and the gas company truck knocks on their door to let them know he'll be outside checking their gas meter. Many of them have called the gas company, been told that he is in fact real and at their address, and still made a post about how they suspect he's actually casing the joint. They are also terrified when a Cox or CenturyLink van is parked on their public street for ""too long," because obviously if you're robbing a place you sit around for a couple hours before taking your loot back to your fake utility van. I really underestimated how many people in my area were fantastical paranoiacs before using Nextdoor.

Yeah sadly, I rented in a huge apartment complex mid-pandemic last year and the fake "carpet cleaner" and "maintenance staff" entry problems were enough of a thing for the complex to say "don't let anyone in unless this one person from the office tells you they're coming". Pre-pandemic I dunno how much of a thing it realistically was but during it I had maintenance people trying to get into my apartment 3 times who weren't actually maintenance people, and a fake Culligan guy. I also live in a shittier place than 95% of goons so it is what it is. But yeah, it happens.

Lately it's like 80% people asking where they can get their covid vaxx. Back in November someone was bragging that the owner of Omaha Steaks ~personally~ sent them a package of steaks for having a Trump sign in their front yard. Most people were keeping their Trump signs in the window to prevent theft. Someone nearby had both yard and window signs, and when the yard signs were stolen the thief also busted their window in and took those signs too.

I asked some American friends about Nextdoor and most of them said that its mostly the racists in the neighbourhood reporting any black persons who they see. "They were wearing a UPS Uniform and delivering a package, but they were clearly casing the join!" "I keep seeing this black man parking in the driveway of one of the houses, and going in, then in the morning going out and into the car again. He must be up to no good, i saw him bring home bags from Trader Joes on day, clearly he's setting up a drug lab!". Those aren't exactly what they told me, but they were close.

can't imagine what kind of person you'd have to be to want someone to pay money for busted old poo poo you don't want any more. If I had like a years old fridge or whatever that still worked and I didn't want it I wouldn't ask for money for it, I'd just say to people, if you want it you can have it. You just have to come round to my house and take it away for me. As long as I don't have to make any effort.
