FFX also better contextualizes its environments in relation to the world it takes place in, so you don't necessarily mind the straight line, whereas a lot of the early FFXIII areas, where it makes its first impression, are pretty abstracted nondescript sci-fi environments that just feel like Video Game Level.

In particular in the last proper level of Hitman 3 there is a whole story with you setting up a character to be sniped by her own security team and the cool and underhand way you set everything in motion is perfectly capped when the target is shot and violently cartwheels 5 metres into the air before plummeting off a cliff like something out of Road Runner This post made me realize that Hitman is the modern day equivalent of a Buster Keaton movie and that's the secret to its success.
