When they say stuff like:

I think this is more down to the authors not understanding this viewpoint and not bothering to try than it being a deliberate wind-up, for example.* It's conservative authors writing a conservative report, with unsurprisingly conservative conclusions but I don't think it's some deliberate whitewash. I do expect the government to brandish it as proof that racism is over in this country, while never bothering to implement any of the reasonably ok stuff that the report recommends.

Because it is required to have Meaning in order to justify Being. I would personally argue that we cannot simply Exist as we are. It's such a ground level state of my own understanding that it is hard to really put into words.

Why does Being require justification? Being simply Is. And while I'm certainly not saying this about you yourself - because you're one of the sweetest people I know - the idea that you have to "justify your own existence" is laden with potentially fascististic overtones, and is in any case a category error, applying a subjective criteria to a purely objective phenomenon

(We should probably take this to discord, mate :) but ultimately what I'm getting at is that the act or habit of obsessing over these questions - that have no solutions, really, except insofar as you choose one for yourself - is often the actual problem that requires a solution)

I think the racism report does bring up an interesting and worthwhile point that poverty, classism and lack of education are the bigger indicators of whether someone will do well in life. It also points out that one of the most disadvantaged groups educationally in the UK are working class white males. Then you look at the north of the country and how it's increasingly voting right wing and tory, the red wall is a thing of the past. That's a generational issue that has been seeded for a long time and is almost impossible to solve in a reasonable amount of time now. If the north starts voting tory how the gently caress is the left wing ever going to win an election in this country? There needs to be some kind of institutional change that doesn't abandon young white working class men to become victims of right wing propaganda.

I’ve tried a few different therapists before and it seems like the field is just not geared to provide what I need – if I’m going to therapy it’s because I need advice on how to deal with my situation / issues, and therapy just asks me to think about things in a different way when thinking about these things inside and out is all I’ve been doing and is why I’m all hosed up lol

I also feel like the therapists I’ve seen end up getting annoyed with me because I’m not seeing the point they’re trying to obliquely make instead of just saying outright

It is a good post though :unsmith:

the trend is away from directive therapy towards person-centred therapy. if you want advice then people here will be glad to provide it - but a good therapist will challenge the idea that external advice is what you need to improve your situation.

if you can't afford therapy or are on a long waiting list then there are free CBT online courses and piles of books that have useful step by step approaches. the most common one is where you make a diary at the end of each day and note what you did at each hour and how you felt

it's a voyage of self discovery and can feel like hard work - but unlike a job, it is at least something you do entirely for your own benefit and that of the people around you. good luck!

I 100% agree with you both, to be clear, and I'm really, genuinely sorry if my post came off as glib. MH provision in this country is utterly atrocious and we live in a society fundamentally hostile to human flourishing and designed to elicit despair. I know that bootstraps is never going to be the answer.
For what it's worth I didn't think your post was glib, I was genuinely pleased for you that it seems to be working.

I just also used it as a jumping point about people who say anyone can just 'choose' to turn it around one day. It's sort of like those businessmen who say it was all 100% their own hard work when they refuse to take into account the school, public infrastructure, police or (in the uk at least) healthcare that put them in a position to do it.

Same with mental health really. Someone in a stable job with their own flat and a good support network is going to find the moment of flipping to positivity a shitload easier than someone in an abusive job, finding a new flat every year who can't afford to socialise.

Things like counselling can help with the process, but as you say, not everyone can afford it or get the full benefit from the few free sessions the NHS provides. And taking pills can boost your mood or level out your brain chemicals if that's all the problem is, but if the underlying issue is psychological, you better have the time and money to sort that out yourself because the NHS funding people do not give a poo poo.

CBT and counselling didn't really work for me, but I suspect it's at least in part due to the autism. It felt like CBT in particular was just asking me to lie to myself about how I feel until I start to actully feel that way, which to me just felt like masking but in my own time.

Counselling was frustrating because I felt the whole time like they were trying to get me to stop caring about the rest of the world's problems and concentrate on myself. Which I get it, you put your own oxygen mask on first, but I can't help but feel that when people are depressed because the world feels wrong to them, the solution is not to convince them to concentrate on themselves.

And the problem is not with me. It's other fuckers making assumptions and ruining the planet and being nightmarishly selfish. My self esteem has improved immeasurably since diagnosis because now I can look back at a lifetime of interactions I didn't inderstand and think 'oh right, of course I didn't understand."

Mental health provision in this country is dogshit. Either you take pills with a laundry list of side effects, (usually sexual or weight based) that you have to pay for, or you go on a course of cbt or counselling with nobody checking up on you if you drop off the list. It's not until you try to kill yourself that anyone thinks to check up on you if you can't motivate yourself to attend appointments, and in the meantime the government and employment system are both actively hostile to you in a capitalist hellscape where you need money to eat and to live.

That was the other thing, the NHS counsellor telling me I should just stop trying to find work and be an artist if that's what I always wanted, telling me that guilt at not earning was a 'working class conceit.' I just stared at her because I felt like i'd been flashbanged by how astonishingly wrong her statement was on so many levels.

Also I wish I could train myself out of using rhetorical you, I start so many arguments online that way. But I need to take the dog out and I don't have time to revise it.

Still pretty questionable. They wouldn't name their party the Northern Independence Generation for Green Environmental Revolution, would they? I don't think anyone think's there's any racial animus behind the name, but when it came to deciding it, the fact that the initials also spelling a racial slur for east Asian people wasn't a dealbreaker would be quite demoralising, were I east Asian.

kind of. there was a leak in the roof that i reported and about a year later i got letters saying how the council has appointed commercial suppliers to put it right and it looks to be costing a million quid. which divided by the number of flats is 5 figures. on the other hand id assume their building insurance would cover it but if so why are they telling me what it costs...?????????

I was really leery about this as well and was getting a bit frustrated with the way my therapist kept bringing back my issues with the world back to me, but ultimately it's their job to help you, not the world. And at least for me it's been about learning the resilience necessary to deal with said lovely-rear end world to the best of my ability, which requires me letting go off all the nihilism and despair and bitterness and trying to connect in a more real way with other people and with myself.

Like, lots and lots and lots of people before us and around us have fought the good fight, not just relentlessly but with optimism and good cheer, and it's not like they're any less aware of the problems than we are. If you need to speak to a counsellor, it's because your problems are yours, if that makes sense? I can probably find a better way of putting that.

There are, and the Tories are loudly telling them to gently caress off

quote:

A plan to protect leaseholders from the spiralling costs of fixing fire safety problems in the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster has been rejected in parliament after the government headed off a cross-party challenge.

Hundreds of thousands of homeowners are facing bills of up to £100,000 to repair dangerous cladding, fire doors and insulation systems discovered after the 14 June 2017 fire, but ministers opposed proposals from the House of Lords, Labour and some Conservative backbenchers to protect them from costs.
