It's funny because at the time, the joke was that no-one knew who this anonymous apparatchik was whose exit spelled certain doom for the whole endeavour. Now we all know and it's somehow even stupider.

And Sarwar begins as expected: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-56238614

quote:

he new Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has said he considers nine Aberdeen councillors suspended in 2017 to still be part of the party.

The councillors were suspended after they disobeyed former leader Kezia Dugdale's instructions not to form a coalition with the Conservatives.

The UK Labour party's disciplinary body said they would remain suspended until the local elections in 2022.

Mr Sarwar said he believed the nine were performing well.

He told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland: "They are not former Labour colleagues, I regard them as Labour colleagues, they are Labour councillors doing a good job.

"I regard them as Labour councillors and I think the situation is far from acceptable, but they have gone through a process that was before my time as leader."

At this rate I'm beginning to think Labour would like to have a coalition with the Tories.

I can appreciate why larping in its current form doesn't seem appealing. I know several trans people through larping for whom the hobby was an important part of coming out and exploring who they are, but a lot of larp systems were made in the old days of "dump everyone in a field and wing it, also rip off a bunch of D&D", entirely by physically-able white guys, while newer systems are made by the people who play those games, so a lot of systems are set up for physical contact, lots of movement, basically playing it loosey-goosey with a lot of things and retrofitting game mechanics and company policies to account for the world moving on and the hobby including a lot more people than basic-rear end white guys, when the whole thing needs a fresh look by a new generation.

I've put some idle thought into how a modernised system could work, including how to make a combat system that's fun and involving but entirely non-contact and suitable for people with mobility issues. The entire hobby needs a fresh set of eyes creating the content they want to see, but there's a much bigger investment to get it off the ground than writing or running a tabletop campaign, so we're not there yet at all.

There have been several attempts at this - Regenesis was written with accessibility in mind to pick an example I'm somewhat aware of and there have been some others. Wing and a Prayer for another quite tightly focussed game (WWII UK air defense game where all the player roles were fem-presenting).

It's not been done at large fest scale, but I'm not sure how it could be - we try and do a mix of accessibility options at Empire and signpost the requirements, but it's ultimately a big battle game with camping, so it's not as inclusive as it could be.

Of course, we'll have to see how much of the hobby survives this past year of being shut down and what comes next.

Someday when all of this is over with, we should have a goonmeet in a field somewhere.

Though given my experience, it'll consist of a load of people who know each other by sight going 'WTF, you're one too?!' (Like three seperate people in one of my groups turned out to be non-posting followers of this thread)

Until you realise there is a significant rump of Labour MPs and apparatchiks who unreservedly agree with Blair's "I'd rather see the Tories in power than a socialist Labour Party" line.

Unite aren't actively doing anything, it's just a natural outcome of having successfully defended their members. They'll be funding Labour's defence in the same way as ever, via the big sum they pay to fund Labour as a whole.

That’s always going to be true for some historical definitions of the word socialist, for example those involving tanks and massive statues of Stalin. And I can certainly believe that there are those who would put Corbyn in that camp. Though I believe Blair claimed to have voted for him at both elections, so those people would be out-Blairing Tony.

But for you to be right, there would have to be a significant group in the Labour Party who thought _Starmer_ was unsupportably left wing. That, even in 2021, I still fail to believe.

OwlFancier
Aug 22, 2013

For him to be right, there would have to be a signficant group in the labour party who think starmer being elected or not is an entirely secondary concern to purging the party of socialists.

Which, uh, seems to include starmer, at this point.

It's a bit overcast today here, but the weekend was excellent. Managed to get in several long walks and sweep up all outside and dig over some spots for peas and also went to perv on some industrial architecture in the good light (big Walkers crisps factory).

A var of crisps.

When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called "the People's Stick", but still happier than if it is called "Captain Tom's Clap for British Stick and Trace (a G4S partnership)".

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
I was paid £120 on Friday by an organisation I trust (faster payments).

The money has not arrived in my bank account and we've double checked the sort code and account code.

The only thing I can imagine is maybe they haven't matched the name, this is because the name the BANK CHOSE to put on my debit card is my full name with initials, on my cheque book is just two of my initials and my surname and when I go on to the online banking it has my title one initial and surname.
I used the one off my debit card which has worked with other payers before so it's the one I gave.

Has this happened to anyone and did the money turn up?

Unite have not made any voluntary donations since Starmer became leader but still pay affiliation dues (though they cut that as well iirc)

This has put a loving massive hole in Labour finances since Unite were the single biggest donor
