Grappendix is the best, but the Icaros machine is cool too.

Only a real madman would use them together though.

I never knew how much I missed old Rainbow Six gunplay until now. Also now I want every game to use the reload mechanic.

I think there's definitely room to expand the reloading to account for a handful of different styles, in a game focused on the differences, without going all Receiver.

I'm excited to see if anyone does make a game where reloading is more... ugh, was the last reloading innovation that wasn't Receiver that active reload thing where you had to time a button press like it was gold?

speaking of reciever, they made a sequel that's an actual game instead of just a tech demo

Yeah I need to get vertical soon. I've gotten stuck in the weird back rooms of the mall that were forgotten by man but unfortunately not these little rat slug things.

I was doing well with a sniper rifle and the Ammo gland to take out the skull mechs and the gas grenade launcher would take out most of the crowd and guard, but getting locked in put an end to those attempts.

I also no longer seem to be able to sell my Gamestop stock for some reason..

i like rolling with the rocket launcher, explosive armor, ammo gland, and double jump. Just go around rocket jumping everywhere for zero self-damage as long as i remember to double jump before landing. very fun

There's a great video example of how a mission goes the first time you play through it vs when you S it and it's Mall funnily enough.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMTzWgZGD8M

The first five minutes of the five minute 27 second long video is the initial run heh

...rough day at the orifice.
Mall strat:
There's a store in the mall that has red walls with black lettering ("hapiness" maybe) that has two stories for easy switching between floors. It's pretty close to the rocket launcher. If you bunny hop around and use those stairs it's pretty easy to lose the chaingun dudes for some momentary breathing room. If you can rocket one (first one is easy enough since it comes up the escalator and you have a corner with a long approach where you spawn) and get it's gun you can just kite the rest one at a time to the red store and just peek until you can hit them with the chaingun. Hit the target room with a rocket and then kick rocks.

I died enough times in the first level to get mad at the game and stop playing - my final two runs ended with me playing slow and stealthy the whole level and then going down a vent shaft and getting plopped into a room of guards and getting instagibbed. I'll try again eventually but yeah, the game seems weirdly hard from what I was expecting it to be like, which was the second part of that mall video. Or like, Postal 2

Yeah, count me in

I'm only on the second level, but I'm having enough fun trundling around coming up with a decent strat that I don't mind the insta-murder

I'm a bit confused about how things carry over between runs though. Money I've collected doesn't respawn (but I still have it, so fair enough), some health items don't respawn either (at least not immediately?), but guns I find don't unlock? Do I need to exit the level with them or what?

You need to exit the level with the gun to unlock it.

Another way to kill the mech is to use the heavy sniper rifle that you can find on the second level.

I managed to finish the first level and have played a reasonably amount of the second. The exploring part is cool but again. Having tons of big open areas where you get instagibbed from someone you never see after 20 minutes of playing very carefully loving blows

If the eye icon appears it means an enemy has direct line of sight to you. If you don't know where they are, duck behind cover immediately.

Edit: what upgrades do you need to cross the gap in the secret area of the HQ?

The first level is pretty tough before you know how things go or have upgrades. I still need to go back and S it.

There are a few traps that can leave you stuck with suicide as the only option and it's never felt better getting trolled by a video game.

Yeah four of the hidden missions are entered Super Mario 64 style. It's unlocked in level select once you've entered. That one is my favorite.

My mall strat requires you to have hand grenades and maybe the first jump upgrade, but only needs you to make three kills.
- Head over to the shop with those circular columns that have tonnes of words on them. There’s a door in the back.
- Jump up into the vents
- Follow vents around, go out of the room you end up in, head left through the door and outside
- Jump into the church-like window in that big blue tower. By kicking the ground you can get up the steep hill instead of sliding off.
- Follow the passageway in. After a bit of walking there will be two armoured cops to shoot, one directly in front of you in a corridor and one to the right when you get to the pool room
- Stand on the ridge overlooking the target, shoot target
- Go back the way you came. The exit is on the bottom floor of the second dome you saw when entering the level, warning there may be a necromech waiting there so leg it.

Ok, so final stage (I think): What am I supposed to do here? I can manage to get through the "labyrinth" into the "church", but there I just get blasted by the lasers and balls from the giant idol at the end.

Edit: Also, while we're at it: How do you open those doors that just give you an incomprehensible phrase when you click on them? There's one in the HQ stage.

You can get a flashlight from the Police Station stage if you equip something that lets you jump higher. Just bring that to the cellar, though you might also need to have "divine link" active to open the door there.

Ranks are all based on time. You get a bit more time for each rank if you start the level with the default loadout (that's the second rank image and purple time on the mission when you're in level select).

You shoot the two "arm" faces until they die once they start firing and then shoot the head face. They don't have a lot of life so you can run up to just unload.

Need to be cursed for that door.

Physically couldnt aim all the way down to hit a guy beneath me from a vent. We were just staring at each other. Had to drop down and he 360 noscope 1 shot me before I landed.

Some mods are plain traps. Increasing jump height is nowhere near as good as double jump. Double jump reaches the same height and has added utility.

Enemies are psychic once they're alerted. Dudes charging into 1 of 10 bathroom stalls, the stall I'm in, after running nearly a quarter mile away from them.

The typical problem of being able to zoom to your target, see your target in plain view, but bullets hit the corner of the wall you're peaking around instead (no im not actually leaning my accuracy is perfect, although leaning has the same problem just with an accuracy hit).

The little worms are just pure sadism, encouraging more groundhog day-esque rote memorization. Some people like this stuff, but I prefer more thinking-on-your-feet kind of gameplay.

I like the ironic aesthetic but there's too much jank!

Groovelord Neato
Dec 6, 2014

The worms are the only thing I can agree with though they're made a lot easier when you unlock the glasses that show holes in the background death matrix. Only ever had the "hitting a wall instead of enemy" when I was trying to snipe on the apartment escape.

If you think mods are traps I can't wait for you to put on higher tier armors :)

I've got two of them so far - the base one and the killing the guy in HQ ending. I presume there's one when you complete all the missions. I raged earlier because I had one of the expensive drops in casino on my pole but didn't click fast enough.
