I'm getting tired of running, so inspired by all the neighborhood kids that have taken it up, I'm gonna strap the rollerblades back on and try to make it a regular thing. I used to go down to the local middle school to speed around their track a lot, but they shut that off so I'll have to suck it up and get used to dealing with hills. Time to learn advanced braking techniques!

Anybody have opinions on knee pads? Last year I learned the hard way that mine won't stay on when skidding on them. And maybe get a skating helmet. Oh and my fast skates could probably use some new wheels...

Knee pads, too. Dropping to your knees when you�re in trouble can save you a lot of pain.

I made the mistake of watching instructional skating videos on youtube and wow I had no idea how little I knew

So when I was looking at a set of rollerblades, I decided on rigid boots and 3x110 wheels mainly because this was one of the few sets in my size I could find online. Anyone have a good breakdown of the difference between smaller/larger wheels? This'll be my first time trying out the larger wheels

Bigger goes faster, what did you use to run? I�ve got a pair of 80s and a pair of 90s, and even that small difference usually catches me out at first. There�s probably a decent chance they�ll be harder, too, so less grip.

Since it�s three wheels the wheel base will be comparable to a 4-wheel with smaller wheels, so maneuverability will be similar. But your center of gravity�s going to be higher, so make sure you�ve got your balance good.

What model did you get? I'd love to get big wheels like that but I don't think what I have to skate on is conducive to GOTTA GO FAST. I used to go to the local middle school and zoom laps on the track, but I think they resurfaced it and now the "NO TRESPASSING" signs are very adamant.

Sure I'll play along. I got the cheap 80s a couple years ago when my nephew wanted to go skating at the beach. Once I get used to brake-less stopping I'll be switching back to the 90s (it has a brake, just has never been very good)

More skates for the skate god! Probably doesn't hurt to have options for big wheels and small wheels. I only know the difference between 80 and 90 and it's not huge, but I imagine 80 and 110 is more meaningful.

I went to rotate the wheels on my 90 for the first time since I bought it... ten years ago maybe? Stripped one of the bolts so now I get to figure that out (or buy a new pair when that wheel completely wears out :getin:

A couple years ago I got a pair of Rollerblade Zetrablades on the cheap because my nephew wanted to go skating at the beach. I've used them a few times in the last few weeks to get back on my feet but really they don't do anything for me.

My main pair are Rollerblade Speedmachine 4x90mm. They were low-end speed skates when I got them ~10 years ago, but these days 4x90 has been replaced in that niche by 3x110. From what I see, the 4x90s that are being made don't have the adjustable frame and xxx9 bearings these guys have.

I�ve started looking at skates since I�m pretty sure my good pair is too big and I�m hurting my ankles trying to keep them tight. I�m waffling on 3x110 since that might be too fast for what I ride (I�ve got a big hill to go down and 4x90 is already fast enough that they start to wander). But I just found these guys with a pretty cool trick:

The 4x90 frame has an extra hole in the middle so you can run it 3x110

I dunno why it took me so long to try to get back into it, but having a nice park nearby really helps. Took a couple laps to get back into the swing of things and practiced braking without brake pads and I loving love it.

I don't know how to stop very well, at all, and just watched this video which seems pretty helpful. They go over 3 stops. The drag stop, power stop, and power slide. I didn't even bother watching the power slide stop because that seems way too advanced. It's like how you stop quickly with ice skates.

Not quite, his power slide (the third one) goes turns backwards before sliding, soul/magic keeps you forward. With enough speed I think you could transition the power stop (second) to a magic, though.

I've read people disfavor the power slide because it turns you around -- especially if you're going downhill -- but yeah that's largely academic for me at this point

You might try looking up local (not necessarily local to you) shops, but skating gear hasn't been immune to covid shortages so you might be out of luck. You could buy a white helmet and spray paint it, but you have to be careful about not getting any paint on the foam

Aaah, yes! Just discovered this thread too. I got back into rollerblading in 2018 after a 20 year hiatus. It's been such a positive addition to my life I honestly can't believe it. I've lost weight, made friends and had a ton of fun. I mostly enjoy low-impact aggressive skating but I've been playing around with bigger wheels too.

I film myself a lot and sharing stuff on Instagram has been a little bonus hobby (my username is @safetygrab).

Right now I'm pushing myself fairly hard to put together a little 3 minute edit. I've never felt so tired.

Looking to get new skates and I can't decide between these two. Anyone have specific advice between them? I'm upgrading from old 4x90 entry-level speed skates

- Option to upgrade to 125s is nice to have, although I don't know if I really need it

Nice one. Next step is to do it on Strava and discover the "sections" feature and realise how astonishingly fast the people on marathon skates are compared to you, then start thinking "hmmm maybe I should actually focus on my regroup and technique".

For me though, the greatest satisfaction is still out accelerating and overtaking cyclists on a smooth flat road near me. I can't keep the top speed I hit for as long as I'd like but long enough to get a decent lead before I have to drop back.

Any recs for guides on good technique?

One of my favorite skating moments came after some bikers cut me off when their trail joined mine. I split their group, so I let the other half by, except that after the merge was was about four miles of almost entirely downhill trail. I was faster than them, but not really fast enough to pass, so instead I got a nice leisurely cruise in their draft that really freaked them out.

I have those ennui and I really want to like them but yeah... the padding's too soft for hard vertical impacts, and anything sliding they're going to grip and give you a big chunk of carpet burn at best. I just run hard pads all the time. Do those pants prevent the pad from sliding out of position? They make similar things for mountain biking but I don't know if those are any cheaper.

Also find a big but safe hill and go bomb down it a bunch until you're comfortable with going fast, that's a pretty big part of the equation, too

I have a pair of Triple 8 street knee pads that have taken many beatings and come out fine, and they have a bigger version that might be better for beginner skateboarding. I also have those ennui gaskets and they�re good for glancing blows (minus the road rash) but not for falls straight into the ground.

wrist, elbow, knee pads and helmet. when i landed on my wrist pad, i felt my elbow go backwards more than normal (they hyperextend like 10-15 degrees). next time i will land on my elbow and let the pad do its job.

Two of the most important skating skills:

1) be able to drop to your knees no matter how you're falling
2) if you can't get to your knees, drop to your shoulder and roll

I usually skip elbow pads and last year I had a big wipeout when I hit a crack mid-stride in a fast turn, but I managed to land on my shoulder and my elbows were almost entirely untouched. I think landing on your elbow is how you usually break your collar bone?

I went down to the ice rink last week to see if they were open yet for the season and they said their hours are 4-6pm Tuesdays and 3-5pm on Sundays (they haven't updated their website or Facebook page in several years). So I took off a bit early, went down there and they were closed due to an electrical issue. gently caress! At least I had a nice hour long bike ride i the rain

I really need to get ice skating one of these days, I've only ever been twice, and it was on lovely outside rinks. There's a bunch of indoor rinks around here but the free skate hours are always terrible. God I wish I grew up somewhere with a speed skating scene.

I've tried but been too busy. It's rough since the trail near my house is constantly leafed over this time of year. There's a track near me that's real nice but it's always a crapshoot whether the lights will be on or not.
