In my speedrun i did soul tyrant without any nail upgrades. Phase 2 took 3 cycles to complete, it was nervewracking as hell.

Holding down allows you to look downwards, so that's why there's a lot of jump traps, you can see down.

So, funny thing about Sly's second phase, the distance between you and him after each spin is just the right length for a nail art. Once you figured that out, the second phase is much easier to handle. Also, ascended Markoth is prob one of the most difficult / hated bosses in the game.
